One bad thing about the takeover is the "renaming" of the signature models, how bland are a bunch of numbers?
I agree but I guess the renaming is something to do with the nature of the 'signature' contracts. On the other hand, some people wouldn't buy a 'signature' model on principle.
Expect ugliness! $599
I've always thought the Hanson guitars looked retro and interesting. But I wouldn't expect the Lakland basses to turn into Hanson guitars.
I think that's the end of the Lakland that we all know. The past few I tried were not upto standard. Is Dan no longer part of it then?
From reading at TB and at the LOG, it looks like Dan Lakin has gone but the company continues as before without him. John Pirruccello (who was already in charge of sales) and the rest of the team remain. John Pirruccello with my Skyline Decade before it left Chicago:

There's been a renaming of various models too: Joe Osborn 4-string becomes the 44-60 Joe Osborn 5-string becomes the 55-60 Bob Glaub becomes the 44-64 Duck Dunn becomes the 44-64 Custom http://www.lakland.com/basses.htm

Steed basses- 1960 blonde stack knob J style bass
EssentialTension replied to wesfinn's topic in Build Diaries
It's looking good, Wes. Nice work. -
I sold Nigel a Fender American Deluxe Precision. It was a very straightforward deal. Nigel paid immediately and communication was always quick and effective. It was a pleasure to do business with him.

Sixteen basses in thirty-five years, I think. I had six in the first twenty-five years and ten in the last ten years. It's not because of Basschat, it's because I have more money and basses are much cheaper than they used to be. My first bass in 1974, a Hofner Artist, cost me two weeks wages. My first Precision in 1976 cost me about two months wages. I have six now but that's one EUB, one acoustic, one fretless, one Precision, one Jazz, and one other one. I feel that's defensible (except maybe the other one).
Dunno..but old men in vests....???? FFS...!! Watched a 70th birthday for John Mayall..which was surprisingly good as it happens...and JM wore a vest... WTF..!!!!
Yeah, old people wearing vests and breathing air - who do they think they are?

Some bass players just won't get with the program ...

I can't see what the problem is. Surely they are not playing live anyway. -
Is it just me or is this tune INCREDIBLE?
I've seen Richard play this live loads of times and its really good, just goes to show that any song can be made to sound great if you mess about with the style its played in. A good song is always a good song.
My point exactly. People confuse production, presentation, performance, genre etc with whether a song is good or not so good. So changing the genre etc can be very revealing.
Anyone seen John Otway do 'I will Survive' in a Bob Dylan stylee? Not only hilarious, but it actually sounds like Dylan could have written it!
I really like the Cake version of I Will Survive: -
I have just bought the 7 way Rockstand and am very pleased with it. Nice and simple.
I've got a five way. It's very good. I occasionally turn the padding around the metal bars so that the padding doesn't get completely squashed in one area.

Fender Precisions - they're fantastic
Not sure what the neck dimensions are like on the US re-issues but real 57 and 62 P basses have 3 different neck profiles; A, B and C. C types have very wide necks (like about 44mm at the nut) that can take a fair bit of getting used to.
'62 is 44.5mm (1.75") at the nut
Re Eq Not sure about the speaker's influence but with an LMII I'd suggest starting with the eq flat and try the filters first.
Agreed. I think the Precision is actually very good at cutting through but start at flat and definitely a little VLE and VPF before anthing else. I think you may not need much eq. -
... The guitar was strung with a couple of bass strings and four guitar strings ...
Do you mean two strings (presumably E & A) tuned as a bass guitar and four strings (presumably D-G-B-E) tuned as a guitar (i.e. an octave up)? Or was it just a normal Bass VI set up like a guitar but all an octave down?
I've had numerous cheapies in the past, a Mex Standard, both 50's & 60's Classic Vibes, one of the new American Standards, but I never truly liked the sound of any of them. I first played mine at Peter's last fall & the sound hit me between the eyes with how totally different it sounded to most other Precisions. Much more growl and clarity and none of the usual nasal mush I'd normally associate with the Precision. It's about a year or so old, this one. I've temporarily put some EB Slinky strings on but as soon as the DR FatBeams arrive, the EB's will be consigned to the trash. Much too harsh for this lovely soulful bass.
I just picked up a '62 reissue as well. I have to agree with Rich there is something soulful about it which I've never quite managed to reproduce from other Precisions I've had. I bought it from Beedster (Chris) who reckoned it really was close on feel and sound to his original '64. -
That's a lovely looking bass, Dave - Unfortunately I'm all spent up at the moment after the past couple of weeks' bass buying, so best of luck with the sale
Thanks, Rich. If I didn't have to pay for the '62 I just bought from Chris (Beedster) and at the same time reduce the heard back to my allotted six, then it wouldn't be leaving me at all. It's been quite close to my heart and I've played it a lot.
