Nerdy string question - early Fenders (1950s)
EssentialTension replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
Really? Thanks for that, the old Precision I have is '78 and was fitted with flats with green silk and I wondered what make they were. From what you say, perhaps they are the original strings. I put them back on yesterday.
They could be original. I think the Fender stainless flats still have green silks today. -
Nerdy string question - early Fenders (1950s)
EssentialTension replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
In 1976 I bought a new Precision and it came with factory fitted flats with green silks. -
The Basschat 'for sale' section is choka -block with 5-string and 6-string basses.
Good, that will save me some money.
Quite right - I always get this lot mixed up! Info: http://www.matsumoku.org/models/ariaproii/bass/tsb/tsb.html down the bottom. So it'd either be the 400 for a bolt-on or the 650 for a through then - might as well have two pickups eh? P.
My TSB-550 from 1980 had the four-a-side headstock not the 2+2 which dates from 1981 I think. ...and I always found one pickup satisfactory.
I reckon he's a ton out. Keep 'em peeled for a TSB-650. Single p/up but through neck.
+1 on the price. +1 on TSBs being very nice basses. I had a TSB-550 which is the through-neck single pickup version. I think the TSB-650 was the two pickup version.
Oh yea, we could count notation into this..
You really need to change the title of the thread then.

This was already discussed only a couple of weeks ago: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=76285 I can't see a problem myself.
Ok, I know, it's a bit of a rant, but I'm fed up with situation in this forum section - most of threads are far away from Theory either Tech (though, they should be, yep?..) - it has transformed into sorta 'Tabs request' thing. Mods, can't we make a separate section for 'Tab asking & sharing'? We should solve this eventually.. Faith
So, did you mean for tabs and notation too?

If you're certain the strings etc. are exactly the same, I think you need to look for other possible differences such as: * 'through-body' or 'through bridge' stringing * shorter versus longer distances after the bridge saddles or nut to the fixing point * greater or lesser break angle over the nut or the bridge saddles to explain the different levels of compliance/elasticity - i.e. what we often call 'tension' but which is not, in physics speak, 'tension' at all.
I'm not 100% sure on this, but don't the strings have to be at a certain tension to give the desired pitch??
From a physics point of view, that's correct; for the same scale length and the same strings (by guage and material and construction) then the 'tension' is the same for the same note. See here: Human Perception of String Tension and Compliance in Stringed Musical Instruments
The tension of the string of a stringed musical instrument is defined completely by the pitch the string is tuned to, its vibrating length, and its mass (weight) per unit of length. This is a matter of basic physics. But there are all sorts of other quantities and qualities that are said to affect string tension. They do not, but (and this is a big but) some of these may indeed affect the compliance of the string, and this will affect how tight the string feels to the player.

Is it me or is the fourth knob on the Precision too close to the jack socket? All looks a little too bunched up for me. Why didn't they put the jack socket on the lower edge? See Oly White one below:
I think it's the passive switch which is between the fourth knob and the last pickguard screw and the jack is on the side.

Does A Fender Control Plate Fit a Lakland JO5?
EssentialTension replied to Rumple's topic in Repairs and Technical
Seriously ? Andy
I don't know but I merely recall reading it on one of the forums. It could be nonsense. We need someone who's actually tried it to tell us. -

EssentialTension replied to Rumple's topic in Repairs and Technical
Really? I would have thought making a Skyline look more like a US model would be frowned on. I might drop them an e-mail and see how I get on. Thanks Dave
Well, I could be wrong but I seem to remember a basschatter (I can't remember who) doing exactly what you're looking to do. I believe one way Lakland do stop people making a Skyline look like a US is that US necks don't fit Skyline bodies. -
What Ashdown gear is made where?
Doesn't matter where it was made as long as it makes the sounds you want and doesn't fall apart.
+1 -

EssentialTension replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used to have an old (about 2001) MAG250C115 combo that was 'Made in England' but the newer (about 2006) Mini 15 I used with it was 'Made in PRC' (i.e. People's Republic of China). -
Does A Fender Control Plate Fit a Lakland JO5?
EssentialTension replied to Rumple's topic in Repairs and Technical
Well I finally got myself a Lakland Joe Osborn and I'm enjoying the passive tone of a jazz bass again, I like the look of the concentric knob layout you get on the US version of the JO and was wondering if this was an easy mod to do? sods law says the control plates are not the same. Any advice would be appreciated. R.
I believe that if you contact Lakland they will sell you what you are looking for - I don't know what the price would be. -
Squier Jazz Classic Vibe - undergoing make over
EssentialTension replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
Well what can I say, I emailed them, told them it was a Squier, they've said no problem, they didn't charge me extra and as you've seen in the pics, it fitted bang on. I guess they must have changed their templates or something. This is the first time I've ordered something from them. Be prepared for a 3 weeks wait, they send them like.... 3rd class or lower. Cheapskates. Mine took fffing ages!
I thought perhaps they now had a template for the CV Jazz but if so I guess it wouldn't have the trussrod cut out. But, hey, it fits!! -
errr.... I assumed it would fit because they assured me it would fit all standard Jazz / Mexican / American and Jap basses.
Strange because when I look at the Jazz pickguards on the website it says: "This will only fit USA and Mexican made Fenders (not Squier or Japanese). If you have a Squier or Japanese or non-Fender copy we'll need you to mail us a tracing or the original part and we'll duplicate the shape for a small (max. $20) set-up fee." -

Hey, bass5, did that new pickguard match up with all the screwholes, neck, and pickup? -
Can I just confirm these are Nitro? How does the finish last with a few plays a week or so?
Spec says that it's nitro. Mine is holding up fine so far after about twenty gigs and probably twice as many rehearsals in about 12 months. No marks or wear at all really and I am at least the third owner - serial number date is 2006.
