I'm wondering if anyone here with experience of neck-position pickups can tell me how they sound? I've never even picked up a bass with a neck pup before.
Lakland Decade and Hollow Body both have true neck pickups and you can hear sound samples here.
Anybody out there heard anything about this at all???. I've been a big big fan of the man for what seems like decades, (old fart) and I have to say, if Bob has the ''final say'' then I'm sure the bass will be something else. OK, so maybe Jamerson was supposedly 'the daddy'', but I reckon Bob B was just as good. especially having to fill his shoes (which he did with distinction) in the ''snakepit'' with the Funkbrothers. There was a small hint from the man himself on You Tube about a possible ''tribute'', but I think that interview was some time ago. As I said if anybody has heard anything I'd be greatful to hear, if it turns out to be a Fender Custom Shop run, then I'll dream on, but if its a normal ''factory run'' then I'd be VERY tempted. Happy festive season to one and all!. Aye, Ray C.
There's a thread about it here at the Babbitt forum - looks like it's now on hold: Bob Babbitt (July 13th 2009) says 'Hey guys....The economy has slowed things down a little at Fender as far as future product is concerned......So the Babbitt Bass seems to be on hold for a while....I will have more info about the Bass soon...I will keep you updated....'

One audition. Four Songs. One Hour

One audition. Four Songs. One Hour
"don't worry, they're all standards"
I've heard that and then you arrive at the audition/rehearsal/gig and find they are 'standards' but with half the chords changed because they are not playing it in a 'standard' manner: Me: 'Shouldn't that chord be a Bm?' Guitarist: 'I've never played Bm, I always play E7' Me: 'That'll be why you've changed the melody line too.' Guitarist: 'That's just the way we play it.' Me: 'OK, E7.' -
Yeah, mine came in a huge box as well. In fact they sent me two and i only ordered one. What im looking for is a small ruller that has measurements in 1/64's from the end. All the ones i have seen start with 1/32's. Not a big deal but i wish i didnt have to divide by two each time.
Yes, mine has 1/64ths in the middle too.
One of my favourite basses (particularly for recording) is an early-80s Ibanez RS924 Roadster - which has only single passive volume & tone, plus a 3-way selector. There's no way of blending the pups and it's massively frustrating. As a JapCrap geek, I'm a bit of an anorak about keeping things original (and this one's near-mint) but every time I play it, I'm tempted to rip out the selector & replace it with a pan pot. Jon.
That's the same issue as on my Tony Franklin - frustrating.
FWIW a 3 way switch will allow you to blend 2 pickups together exactly as you already can with a J type, but will allow you to quickly solo either PU without fiddling with a volume pot. This strikes me as more useful: all the sounds you already have plus 2 more.
On a Jazz bass I can quite successfully 'fiddle' with two volume pots at once using one hand if I need to but it's very rarely necessary. The three way switch is just irrelevant to me. My Tony Franklin fretless Precision with P/J pickups has a three way switch and a single volume control - the one thing I would change about the Franklin is to remove the switch and have two separate volume pots.

How expensive can earphones possibly be?!
EssentialTension replied to kevbass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I have a mate who spent over £200 on a set of earphones, only to get them trapped in a taxi door on a drunken night out. Cue 25 minutes of them bouncing off the road at 30mph, they were well and truly broken afterwards!
I can understand £200 on earphones. I can't understand taking £200 earphones on a drunken night out. -
I'm wondering how can we descirbe perfect ear... the hearing is not an objective sense (it's only for ourselves)
Wikipedia says:
Absolute pitch (AP), widely referred to as perfect pitch, is the ability of a person to identify or recreate a musical note without the benefit of an external reference [...] Generally, absolute pitch implies some or all of the following abilities when done without reference to an external standard: * Identify by name individual pitches (e.g. A, B, C#) played on various instruments * Name the key of a given piece of tonal music just by listening (without reference to an external tone) * Identify and name all the tones of a given chord or other tonal mass * Sing a given pitch without an external reference * Name the pitches of common everyday noises such as car horns
Sounds fairly objective to me.

Michael, you are not thinking straight, you obviously need an upright bass - EUB or double bass, it doesn't matter which. -

making a chinese bass sound like an american one...
EssentialTension replied to ogri's topic in Repairs and Technical
I don't think you'll manage to get the CV to sound exactly like the Highway but you might make it sound even better than it does. I have a CV Jazz and it is a great instrument but I'm also considering some upgrades. 1) I'm not changing the bridge, which is already a high mass bridge with brass saddles. 2) I'm planning to change the electrics for CTS pots, a Sprague capacitor, and a Switchcraft socket. 3) I'm going to change the pickups for (probably) a pair of Lindy Fralin Vintage Jazz (but maybe Wizard 64s or Fender Custom Shops - or lots of other possibilities depending on what you like). -

A thumb rest can be limiting because in practice you may not always want to play in the same position. Sometimes you'll want near the bridge, other times up over the end of the fingerboard, someitmes in between. So better, IMHO, to get used to working without a thumb rest.

1) How long have you been playing Bass Guitar/String Bass for or both? Bass guitar - 35 years, Electric upright - 9 months. 2) If you don’t play string bass/bass guitar have you thought of doubling up on either to get more recognition as a bass player? n/a- but it wouldn't be about recognition. 3) Who are your favourite exponents of both string bass/bass guitar? I don't really have favourites, I listen to lots of people 4) Do you think that both the bass guitar and string bass are important as bass instruments? of course they are. 5) What genres do you think are important for bass players to listen to? all of them, of course 6) Do you think electric guitarists can learn to play bass guitar more than string bass? of course, they are physically more similar 7) Do you think bass can be used to solo as well as accompany other instruments? of course it can and is 8) Do you think it is important to learn to sight read? the importance of sight reading depends on what you are doing as a musician, for some it would be indispensible. But there's also a difference between being able to immediately read and play on first sight and being able to make sense of notation which would be not disadvantageous for any bass player 9) What do you think of bass guitars such as 5 string/6 string e.g. as being an add-on to the bass players role? they are fine but they don't interest me and aren't necessary for what ido 10) What are your opinions on electric upright basses as a substitute for the string bass? they take up less space and allow me the opportunity to play some upright 11) What is the best amp to use for bass guitar or string bass? there is no best amp 12) What pickups for string bass are the best for capturing the natural tone of the instrument? there is no best pickup
