Fender Precisions - they're fantastic
EssentialTension replied to Ham fisted Bass's topic in Bass Guitars
I think it's interesting that 50 years on Fender basses from all decades are still held in such high regard. I love the Precision bass, why anyone would want to play a jazz beats me!! It's interesting that in the US, when they could have used anything, so many "First Call" studio players, the guys that created the records that form the foundation of popular music, chose the Precision; Carol Kaye, David Hood, Duck Dunn, Tommy Cogbill, Bob Babbett, James Jamerson, etc. It seems that many of the producers and engineers demanded that the studio players used Fender and I've seen several pictures of "Studio" basses in Nashville, LA and New York and they've all been Precisions. What's the betting that in another 50 years the Precision will still be with us?
Not just Fender Precision but Fender Precision with flats. -
Which make of strings are these?
EssentialTension replied to ianwild16's topic in Accessories and Misc
Nice sounding strings but the tension of D'Addarios is unreal , I used them for a while as they sounded really good but after a few months of using them I felt like my fingers were gonna fall off , felt like I was playing iron bars
I didn't mind the tension but they were roundwounds. MY CV Jazz is now wearing Pyramid Black Nylon Flats. -
Does anyone know which make of string uses the different coloured loops on the retaining loop? They are on my new CV jazz...they still sound quite good even after a gig and plenty of home noodling. Thanks Ian
D'Addarios is what they seemed to be on my CV Jazz - although I had them off and replaced in about 15 minutes. -
My TI Jazz A string broke whilst recording a track this weekend. I was gutted as, not only was it the middle of the track, but I din't have spare flats with me - I've simply never broken a flat other than by doing something bloody stupid with it (e.g., using a LB on a string through body bridge). I managed to get back to the part, albeit on the E string, before the end of the bar which, I think, was pretty good going, but of course had nowhere to go as the part moved up the scale, and we had to sack that take. Don't know if TI do individual strings but if not it's an expensive break indeed. The string looked pretty worn (it snapped at the saddle), making me realise that I spend a lot of time on the A string and should perhaps get around the neck a bit more! C

I think I've broken 3 TI flat A strings. I've never broken an E, D or G. They've all broken at the saddle. One of them broke only after about 4 months - but a lot of taking the neck on and off doing some work on the heel. One of them broke on a string through body - after about a week. I read somewhere that they're not suitable at all for string throughs.
I've broken a TI Jazz Flat A string at the bridge too - it was about 20 months old and just beginning to sound really great.

The serial 384915 checks out as 1973-4. Strange that the seller gives the serial as 3849*5 when it's easily seen in one of the pics.

I saw Motorhead last year at Brighton Dome. They were extremely loud - the kick drum sound compressed the chest cavity - and were totally perfect at what they do. Mind you, after about twenty minutes I felt that I'd seen and heard enough and was bored.
ti flats are loose feeling if you want flats and they are great strings
TI rounds are also low tension.

Is This Actually An MIJ/CIJ Fender?
EssentialTension replied to Lew-Bass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'd want to see a lot more pics before I bid on that - the logo looks like an addition even though it's correct for a lefty; he couldn't be bothered to clean it; no sign of a serial; etc. -
If you are looking to date the bass and it's a Skyline then the first two numbers of the serial (e.g. 08*******) are the year. And at least sometimes the second pair are the month. http://www.lakland.com/tech-docs/serial-numbers.pdf
With the Lakland DJ5, when did they start PLEK'n and change to Lakland pickups? Also, are the Aero pickups classed as better, or worse? Obviously difficult to answer....as its subjective. But which is the authentic DJ sound? Thanks
Lakland got the PLEK machine before November 2008 (when my Decade was plekked) but maybe not long before - I think it was referenced on their website from October 2008. The Lakland pickups were announced on October 4th 2006.

Who was looking for a lined fretless Precision?
EssentialTension replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
I was a while ago but I settled for an unlined Tony Franklin. -
Hi all, Got a bit of a dilemma here Iam having my MIA Fender Deluxe Precision set up and I am wondering whether or not to stick a new set of strings on it. I currently have TI flats which are fab but a bit I find them slightly "loose". I like the look of the Rotosound Jazz 77 strings I play in a christian group so looking for a nice smooth silky sound. Appreciate any thoughts Deaky
Try some Pyramid Gold Flats from StringStar - link and Basschat 10% off here.
I'm also now hoping that the CV I've ordered isn't too light! My Am standard is 9.4lbs ish.....and that is just fine. Si
The MIA Jazz that I used to have was over 10lbs - great sound though.

JV Precision De-fret or not De-Fret
EssentialTension replied to henry norton's topic in Bass Guitars
I wouldn't do it - there are plenty replacement necks which will fit right in there without you molesting a perfectly good neck of some historical note.
+1 - I can't see a good reason for doing this. -
