(Sun Ra's) Arkestra at Kitchen St, Liverpool, last Thursday 5th. No Sun Ra, obviously 'cos he's dead, but 12-piece led by not dead 93 year old Marshall Allen on alto sax and EWI. Quite astounding before a mesmerised audience of all ages.

Standard stringing/tuning was probably EADGBE one octave below guitar but of course you can do what you like as long as it fits.

I suspect these are well sought after and fetch a good price when they become available.

It's the same body as a 34" scale four string but with the bridge positioned for a 30" scale neck. Hence the roughly 4" gap behind the bridge.

Just put a set of Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats (50-70-85-105) on my Epiphone Embasssy PRO - they work well. Nice purple silks too.

I have always thought a 'zero fret' with grooves (i) to keep the strings in place and (ii) to set the string height ... was commonly called a 'nut'. I have always thought a 'zero fret' was merely and exactly a fret at the zero position such that it set the pitch for the open string, while the 'nut', just behind, kept the strings in place and set the necessary string height. How wrong could I be?

No need for guilt at the pleasure of brilliant arranging, brilliant singing and, if that wasn't enough, brilliant Joe Osborn on bass.

Not sure about a Mustang but on a Precision two and a half (or towards three) winds round the tuner is enough to give a workable break angle on the E string. In my experience, the retainer you link to is more commonly used for the A string where even three winds can be insufficient.

And on the return flight would you let the baggage handlers put it in the hold for you?

Harris's signature set seem to be just Roto RS77 Jazz Flats heavy gauge rebadged and resilked. To me those are not 'flat and dull' but 'solid and bright'.
