The Alembic electronics is a factor no doubt but so is the Versatone (which I think is being used as a preamp). I think it's a bit like having an active bass with the pedal board included.

However, learning piano/keyboard even a little will improve anyone's understanding of music.

You can achieve the same effect by not tuning up accurately and then bend each note as you play it. If it's fretless you don't need to tune up or bend ... just go for it.

... mind you, it's 3.57 but seems like 9.57.
