1.
how is he getting this tone? Or is can this be summed up by the 'Alembic' part of the Guild? What makes Alembivs get this tone?

Despite the Alembic tinkerings, it still sounds like a Guild Starfire more than anything IMHO.
Agreed it sounds like an overdriven Starfire with the Hagstrom Bisonic pickups. The Alembic electronics is a factor no doubt but so is the Versatone (which I think is being used as a preamp). You can catch a glimpse of the Versatone and the Fenders at Woodstock at about 0.40. http://youtu.be/NIZMdanCZtM
 2. I think it's a bit like having an active bass with the pedal board included.
 3.
I worry that there aren't enough controls on that bass...
No need to worry ...
 4.
... workshops at the fur peace ranch are like
http://www.flyguitars.com/interviews/jackCasadyIntro.php ... and scroll down.
 5. Most people wouldn't know a bass line even if it made them dance. Conversation .. 'I love this song it makes me want to dance.' 'Do you like the bass line?' 'What is that?' 'The bit that goes der-di-di, der-di-didi-di, der-der-didi-di.' 'You mean the drums?'
 6. Alembicized Guild Starfire, and, I'm guessing, probably Pyramid Gold strings, Versatone Pan-O-Flex combo, Fender Dual Showman with 2x15 ... http://youtu.be/2bKsCOD32Tk
 7.
... The bass sounds good( a Rick , that's not growly/ trebly) ...
It looked like a Fender Precision to me or am I going mad?
 8.
What with the layout of a keyboard/synth being similar to say a bass (in terms of black keys being sharps and flats - and how you can easily play the c major scale for example) do any of you find it eady to crossover your bass knowledge to keyboard? I'm thinking of recording my own stuff and i want to add synths in some parts, I'm not gonna be Keith Emerson any time soon, but i feel like my bass playing would really help with keys. Wonder what you guys think
I don't see how bass guitar is similar to a keyboard except in that they are both musical instruments. I don't understand your 'black keys' comment. However, learning piano/keyboard even a little will improve anyone's understanding of music.
 9. You can achieve the same effect by not tuning up accurately and then bend each note as you play it. If it's fretless you don't need to tune up or bend ... just go for it.
 10. ... mind you, it's 3.57 but seems like 9.57.
 11.
Without You - Nilsson
I can imagine The Junkyard Dogs doing a Badfinger version. It would need to be placed carefully in the setlist. http://youtu.be/PPco24LS31A
 12. You can cover any song if you have a way of rearranging it. http://youtu.be/V4WGsMplGxU
 13. Very good but what colour? I usually avoid effects but I'm using a Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail.
 14.
... I'm going to try the TI Jazz roundwounds too, when I've sold the house.
I used to have a bass tuned BEAD with TI Jazz Rounds ... it was fat.
 15. Very nice ... made me smile ... if I had to pick a winner it was the TIs ... but see discreet's question.
 16. Actually forget the friend and the barre and the capo. Just tune down to DGCA and then never play open strings or fret one. Hey presto! It's a life hack.
 17.
... Anyone have a life hack for an impromptu capo?!?!?
Invite a friend to barre all four strings at the second fret while you play at the third fret and above.
 18.
But I'd have to catch a bus.
If I suggest getting a taxi, or maybe walking, is that a life hack?
 19.
... I don't even have a capo! ...
See! Told you!
 20.
And it's not a life hack. The easiest short-cut or trick would be to play an actual short scale by buying or borrowing one or trying at a shop instead of farting about with a long scale.
Especially if you didn't possess a capo and had to go to the shop to buy one.
 21.
Life hacking refers to any trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method that increases productivity and efficiency, in all walks of life. -Wikipedia
So, that's a new phrase for something not new at all.
 22.
Thanks Essential Tension - I'm pretty sure that qualifies as a life hack! I'll give it a try. Cheers, David
What is a 'life hack'?
 23.
I cannot imagine calling an LM2/3 'sterile' sounding...
No.
 24.
Maybe just be happy someone actually noticed your "tone" , doesn't happen every gig
I don't really want anyone 'noticing my tone'. I'd prefer they liked the band.
 25.
Mark bass known for a rather sterile sound ...
In which universe?
