If you want a rough idea of how a short scale feels and sounds then take a 34" scale bass. Downtune it by a whole tone to DGCF. Put a capo at fret two and you have a 30.3" scale bass tuned EADG.

[/quote] Which 45-90 set? Or is it 40-95? What make and model? You should learn to setup guitars and basses. It's easy and necessary if you are changing strings especially changing type of strings e.g. round to flat. There are lots of Youtube videos e.g. search 'Lakland setup'.

Also good on Mustang is TI JF324 set. But totally different feel.

Gauge alone is not a measure that matters. Different strings are differently constructed and so have different tensions and different setups. Even differently constructed flatwounds of the same gauge have different tensions and require different setups.

Never used a Buzzstop. Instead shim the neck so that when the bottom of the bridge is about one quarter inch above the pickguard then the strings do not buzz. I recommend the Staytrem bridge. A Fender Jaguar tremolo fits. With mine the tuners and the frets were fine.

Jack, with the TIs you can try (1) playing very near the bridge where there is less elasticity to dig into or (2) playing right over the end of the fingerboard where less is less space to dig into. I do (2) with TIs.

I have never used 760FX but my guess would be that they will feel looser than the 760FL but not as loose as the TIJFs. The TIs are highly compliant or elastic under the fingers in part because of their construction and not merely because of their gauge.

[/quote] They can have sounded different for a wide range of reasons unrelated to 4/5 string necks ... and like you say 'neither were shabby in any way.

Even the same model bass is made of different bits of wood, and the pickup may be wound slightly differently, etc. So, even if you could hear a difference, you couldn't know it was because of the 4/5 difference.
