2.
i think to be honest before this gets to far, you had to be there or you don't understand
What if I was there in a former life? You know, man, like reincarnated, man?

 5. I like the threads where you had to be there or you don't understand.
 6.
Surely the finding of the waistcoat guy trumps everything?
Perhaps you're confusing it with the Donald Trump thread.
 7.
The gain available then through the amp alone was limited compared to some the current hi-gain heads available today. And was Jimi not associated with early overdrive/distortion/fuzz units such as the Fuzz Face? Even Gary Moore would front load a Marshall 50w head flat out with a tube screamer and a Boss DS-1, especially with his Strats.
I take your point (and I also may not know what I am talking about) but aren't the overdrive/distortion/fuzz/tubescreamers doing what the modern hi-gain heads are doing?
 8. You get some instrument insurance included in the annual fee if you join the Musician's Union.
 9.
What is it with bass players and telecasters? I've got a MiM 1972 thinline reissue which I bought c.2000. It's the best skinny string I've ever owned and up there with the best I've ever played. I don't know if it's the simplicity of the controls or the relatively chunky necks, but I've known a fair few tele owning bass players down the years.
I prefer an Epiphone Casino with P90 dog ear single coils.

 11. You won't know without trying it but why wouldn't it match up?
 12.
I think the difference between the two types was much more obvious before the introduction of modern hi-gain amps. Back when a JCM800 ruled the roost, a single coil guitar simply couldn't get the same drive and break-up as a humbucker shod instrument.
Nonetheless there were guitarists using single coils and plenty of 'drive and break-up' - Hendrix for example.
 13. Bass VI, neck and bridge pickups on, strangle switch engaged, thin pick. Play rhythm.
 14.
I like some of Jaco's stuff, but find quite a lot of it to be pretty much unlistenable. Does this mean I should sell half my gear?
A very fair question. The answer must be to sell only the half of your gear that is pretty much unlistenable.
Fretless, surely?
A very fair point but nonetheless I expect most of the people who claim to be influenced by the revered one are playing with frets.
 15. I've used those green silk highly tense Fender flats. That's what the truss rod is for. Or for adjusting the other way if they are low tension strings.
 16. It will be aimless fret w***ing pot noodle next. How dare they?
 17.
Ok fair enough - I didn't think he did irony but clearly I'm mistaken
The Youtube link to a live version is on the first page of this thread.
 18. If the truss rod is adjusted appropriately then there should not be a problem.
 19.
heard the song containing words "some people want to fill the world with silly love songs"** (ironic, given that he is a major culprit) and was very impressed by the bassline ** i have no idea what its actually called
It's called Silly Love Songs and was written in response to others complaining he only wrote silly love songs. So, the irony was McCartney's own.
 20.
... it is worth checking out...
I think you'll find that many of us have indeed 'checked out' Pastorius.
 21.
... they're playing in cover or function bands. The typical muso bores who seem to have never written their own material but just mimic others.
You're on dodgy ground there because the great many so-called originals bands are playing highly unoriginal songs which badly mimic others. At least, that's my experience
 22. I feel luckier when the USA does not take precedence over the UK.
 23.
What has he played on? I've never heard of him apart from seeing his name mentioned on here occasionally.
Tower of Power at one time.

 25.
I thought this was to be a thread about Bobby 'Rubber Ball' Vee.....!
... and The Night Has a Thousand Eyes ...
