1.
^^^ these. About £21 shipped from Lakland. (My boring stock answer - sorry)
Are the Lakland ones now just GHS in a GHS packet? Purple silk not black silk and not repackaged?
 2. GHS Precision Flats 3050M are OK strung through-body. But through-body is not always a good idea with (some) flats.
 3.
If we all stuck to playing bass lines on a four string then nothing would happen. Mind you, having said that, Michael Mannring does do quite a lot with a four string. Open your horizons. And as JapanAxe said.
No future for the cello, viola or violin then. I don't suppose much can happen with pianos until they get more than 88 keys.
 4.
This page from Eltham Jones' site (a renowned luthier around this way) may be of interest to people following this topic, in particular with regards to every fret other than the 12th being a compromise: http://www.edgeguita.../scheitenballs/
Thanks for that. I can see Buzz has definitely got some history problems. I've never had tuning problems myself. EADG and off we go.
 5.
He may have a point about the ubiquity of recorded music as a sort of aural wallpaper, I'm not keen on that either. ...
That was my main point.
... But I heartily dislike his contention that a song with few notes in the melody must be of low quality. When I was a teenager, I couldn't stand hip-hop and rap, and I tended to make similar judgements. Lately I've heard some of those records again and it occurs to me that they were actually doing something bold and interesting by largely ignoring conventional tonality.
I agree wholeheartedly that Scruton makes some bizarre judgments but I do also think he makes some good points. I particularly liked the line about our fear of silence: 'Silence must be excluded at all cost, since it awakens you to the emptiness that looms on the edge of modern life, threatening to confront you with the dreadful truth, that you have nothing whatever to say.'

 7.
Who gets to decide what is "Music of lasting value" & "Mere ephemera"?
Time gets to decide.
 8. On actually listening to Scruton, who I can't pretend to agree with on almost all issues, I discovered that his complaint about the ubiquity of pop muzak is a complaint often and commonly heard on Basschat.
 9. Lots of winding lengths here too ... http://www.bassstringsonline.com/Bass-String-Lengths-by-Manufacturer_ep_47-1.html
 10. JF324 fit some 30" scale basses very well. It depends on the length from bridge to tailpiece. Anything with some kind of trapeze will be fine as is the Guild Starfire.
 11.
... Also I cannot put a Youtube link in a thread, even when removing the 's' from http.
Use the Youtube share link without the s - e.g http: //youtu.be/RBqcHDDuDo8 without the gap in between [ media ] and [ /media ] without the gaps ...
 12.
Can anyone answer, why are strings different lenths ie, the risers at the bridge are not all in a straight line. Surely an octave is half the wavelength so why are they not all the same? Ta in advance Mike
From the Fender setup guide. Implies an answer to your question by telling what to do ....
INTONATION (ROUGHING IT OUT) You can preset the basic intonation of your bass by taking a tape measure and measuring from the inside of the nut to the center of the 12th fret (the fret wire itself; not the fingerboard). Double that measurement to find the scale length of your bass. Adjust the first-string bridge saddle to this scale length, measuring from the inside of the nut to the center of the bridge saddle. Now adjust the distance of the second saddle back from the first saddle, using the gauge of the second string as a measurement. For example, if the second string is .060" (1.5 mm), you would move the second-string saddle back .060" (1.5 mm) from the first saddle. Move the third saddle back from the second saddle, using the gauge of the third string as a measurement. Adjust the fourth saddle in the same manner (and fifth if you have a five-string bass). Note: If you're using a taper-wound fourth string (and fifth if it's a five-string bass), use the actual gauge of the string for your measurement rather than the dimension of the tapered portion of the string. http://www2.fender.c...ar-setup-guide/
13. Here's the Fender guide for setting bass action ... http://www2.fender.com/support/articles/bass-guitar-setup-guide/ The harder you dig in the higher action you'll require to give the string space to vibrate.
 14. And there will be no debating or arguing the decision. In fact, if you argue too much you will be removed from the flight.
 15.
... Bob Dylan ...
I read somewhere that Mac Rebennack (Dr John) was worried about not having a good enough voice to record an album himself but Frank Sinatra told him 'If Bob Dylan can sing then you can sing'.
 16. I'm sure it's correct that cabin crew will try to be helpful but my warning is that I think there may not be any guarantee. I have certainly seen hand baggage taken from the cabin to the hold.
 17. I haven't read the policy but my actual experience of many EasyJet flights is only one hand baggage of a maximum size. If you have a second bag, like a ladies' handbag or a manbag, then that second bag must go into the hand baggage bag. Furthermore, if the flight is crowded with hand baggage then you may be required to allow your hand baggage to go into the hold.
 18.
... I have a double bass. That's far from convenient
You're not wrong there.
 19. Yes, I agree with the other posts ... and if you want acoustic volume, really you need an upright bass. There's a reason they are the size they are.
