I use one of these as an alternative to carrying my bigger 2x10 Ashdown combo. Originally I got it for home use but have used it at rehearsals and at a couple of bigger gigs where I DI'd it into the house PA using it as a monitor. It was great in all these circumstances. Big sound even with my 5 stringers. You do have to watch the gain as the meter goes red and distorts very easily, especially the low B. A good buy.

They sound good too, but in a bigger venue you'll need to DI into the PA.

I originally got a 5 some years ago as my band at the time had a really good keyboard player (who actually played with both hands) and was inclined to trespass on my sonic territory, plus also a girl singer who always made sure the key was the best one for her range, often being D downwards. The five allowed me to keep low when I needed to. It didn't take me very long to ge used to having the extra width to play with and was in fact very handy in alowing me to change neck position and put in more umph on the same passages as the song progressed.Active pickups, which are more normal for 5s are another bonus. I now have 3 V's including a recently acquired passive one. The killer agument though is that with a 5 you can hit that really low B at the beginning of Comfortably Numb and shake the glasses off the bar! Redult!

I'm also a 5 stringer, also in the North East and have had this happen to me too. I blame the troglodytes who play the guitars, they feel threatened by someone who might be able to do something other than stand in the back row and plonk along to their guitar hero antics.

Early on I had Howard (aka Bass Doctor) put in some EMG pups running at 18v and the sound can be enormous when you want it and subtle when you don't. Excellent bass, pity they never did it in 5 string!
