Yes I got it for Chrimbo a couple of years ago - good for a general read but as I don't own a genuwine Fender, not much practical use aside from the general tips for setting a bass up (which I could do before anyway) Good read for the history of the instrument though Ian

Configuring pickups for series settings only?
Bottle replied to Dood's topic in Repairs and Technical
Dood, just to throw a rubber duck in the ring, have you considered a different approach? Dingwall do a four-position rotary switch pre-configured for humbuckers. Position 1: Bridge Humbucker only Position 2: Both pups in parallel Position 3: Both pups in Series Position 4: Neck HB only IIRC it's called the 'super switch' or something. This thread may help ATB, Ian -
Episodes 7 & 8 were on BBC4 last night and are up on iPlayer here Enjoy!

I roll my own, only because I can I've used Canford HST cable and Neutrik connectors for near enough every balanced cable and I've not had any failures (yet). Mogami or VanDamme cable for all unbalanced instrument cables, and you can't go wrong with the Neutrik right-angled jack plugs to relieve the strain on the socket on your instrument.

Episode 6: New Orleans up now http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0295vtp/foo-fighters-sonic-highways-6-new-orleans Watched it last night and I think it's the best yet (well, my faves have been the first one and five and six so far)

Loved the challenge. Learnt some new stuff. Played around with MIDI. And a couple of bods liked my mix. Can't complain life is good

Watched it now - loved the ethos of recording out in the desert. Will have to get the album off of Amazon for Xmas

Nice job! Been watching the video of their set at 'T In The Park' - can't believe they're going to be supporting Foo Fighters next year. Awesome!

Woah! Just listened to the OP's tracks through my monitors - that's some serious sub going on there! Awesome! Like the first one particularly - Natacha Atlas can sing
Yes agreed brilliant series I saw the first two on BBC4 I heard then it's gone to another channel, is that right?
AFAIK, the next four are all iPlayer-only episodes. The last two should then be on BBC4 in December

I've got the Palmer D'Accapo and it works very nicely with the balanced output from my interface. It has a ground lift and output level trim as well. All-in-all very good value for £60 new from Amazon (EDIT: when I got it last year - price has gone up a little since then). I have no experience with the Radial RMP but as they're both passive devices based around the original Cuniberti design, I shouldn't expect too much in the way of difference. YMMV etc Radial also do the XMP which is an active version, but again I have no direct experience. Besides if this is a one-off project, the Palmer may be a cheaper way of getting the results you're after. Let us know how you get on Ian
Couldn't say, just watching it online myself, ep. 3 there now http://www.bbc.co.uk...ays-3-nashville
Caught it yesterday afternoon. Looks like Ep 1 & 2 had an airing last Sunday on BBC4, then episodes 3-6 will be iPlayer-only, rounding out the series with Ep 7 & 8 in December on BBC4 again, or so I am lead to believe. So far, its been an entertaining and informative series with some really good interviews with musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds and genres. I though the Nashville episode was fascinating (not a huge fan of C&W music in general, but have to admit, the musicianship and production are top-notch). Anyway, horses for courses as always
WELL DONE EVERYONE! I'll launch the voting sometime today.
Voted too! Superlative efforts this month, but only one mix really 'clicked' for me (and it wasn't my own either hehehehe). Very hard being objective after having played around with the track so much in the last two weeks, but I found the mix that summed up the raison d'etre of the music for me

Got back safely last night. Super knackered after a five hours in the car in total, but super day yesterday catching up with old friends and having a good natter with whole new ones. Got to jam with Paul and generally have a great time Thanks to Nik and Colin for putting on the bash, and to everyone who contributed. The Pilates workout really limbered me up. Must say, even after lugging stuff about, had a fantastic nights' sleep Looking forward to the Herts bash and SE Bash 2015. Maybe we'll come up with a different gear shoot-out? Can't wait! -
Voted! Listening to the submissions on monitors in a darkened room......scary It was a tough choice this month, but well done all
got it finished rushed through it this morning to complete what i had already done so not really a great arrangement and not a lot of time to work on actual sounds, mixing or mastering i did a quick bit of each (not that i really know how to) lol. I feel like have committed a bit of a crime with what i have done to this song, it did not really turn out how i planned! https://soundcloud.c...ctober-remix-bc
Impressive! It always amazes me how people find some subtle nuance that I completely overlooked and strip it down and tighten it all back up agan love it!
How exciting! Really looking forward to hearing the finished articles!
Indeed! Nearly lost the whole mix at the eleventh hour through a combination of tiredness and stupidity (but Reaper came to the rescue!)

Aaaaand I'm done! Linky: https://soundcloud.c...ba-bc-mix-final Wot I 'ave done: Topped and tailed all the tracks and grouped under suitable sub-mixes, i.e drums, vox etc Played around with the intro a little and added a MIDI keyboard VSTi synthy opening number, think of "Are Friends Electric?" (this is all new territory for me - I can't even play a keyboard!) Added some reverb to the vocals as they were sounding a little dry - this I have found is easy once grouped as I can assign a common send to the ReaVerb plugin from each of the tracks and keep it tight and balanced. Outro trimmed a little and added more keyboard Threw a better mix on the whole caboodle - it's a basic L-C-R mix, no muss, no fuss mixed properly on monitors now hehe Tidied up the bass with some automation, compression and gating before sending it out to a selection of different cabs 'n' effects. Still learning how to do things in Reaper, but I managed to output the track through a couple of Aux busses on my interface and out to my reamping box. I then did a single pass through Nigels' old SansAmp ParaDriver (yes, I still have it!) into channel #1 (left) and simultaneously into channel #2 (right) through a JOYO Ultimate Drive feeding a Bass Big Muff Pi result: awesomely huge sounding bass. Other than that, not done much else with the mix as it was so well tracked. Felt a little bit foolish and arrogant to mess with perfection, but it's my take on a class bit of musicianship and I wanted to do something pleasing to honour that. It's late now and I'm spent Later'z y'all
OK, so a quick update on the idea of a valve vs solid state vs hybrid amp 'shoot-out'.. Having discussed it with Chimike, we think it'd be interesting to compare the relative merits of: Valve amps Hybrid amps (valve pre + solid state output stage) Lightweight Class D amps We have the following amps put forward for this so far: EBS TD650 Fender Bassman Trace Elliot Quatra Valve Marshall Superbass 100 Ampeg (model TBC) GB Streamliner 600 Aguilar Tonehammer 500 Hughes & Kettner Bassbase 600 Mesa Walkabout If anyone has any other amps that might make this more intresting, then please let us know? Thinking of Markbass, Thunderfunk, GK, Eden etc, etc. We will probably do this using a couple of different basses and a couple of different cabs, including my SWR Triad, which is a good all rounder.. Suggestions/offers of basses and cabs for this will be very welcome Would also welcome suggestions as to how to run this - thinking of perhaps doing it like the P Bass shootout at the last Hert's Bash? Is anyone interested in being the demo bass player for this?? Time will be 2pm-3pm.
As an alternative to having someone play the same line over and over, might it not be a better idea (in terms of consistency) to use either a looper pedal or a pre-recorded bass track. I was planning on bringing my laptop anyway, which has some bass tracks on it from the mixing challenge. I can bring the interface and a reamping box as well, if that helps. Alternatively we could record the bass direct and then loop it ad infinitum from the laptop? Anyway, just a thought that might prove useful! Cheers, Ian -
I've no experience of using Eagle for PCB routing but I've used Express Schematic/PCB for making boards. It can also price up a bare board for you (if you want to buy them from the US). Fine if you want a two-or four-layer board with power and ground planes. At work we use CADStar which is much more complicated and designed for making large multi-layer PCBs. It has a better workflow if the aim is make boards in high volume. As always YMMV

I almost missed this documentary strand, particularly as the first two back-to-back episodes were late on Sunday night. I thought DG's doc on Sound City was really good and I'm glad he was able to negotiate the purchase of the Neve desk before it got gobbled up by some other studio or worse, sold for spares. At least it has gone to a new studio in the hands of an appreciative owner. Not always been a big fan of the music, having never really 'gotten' Nirvana but he seems to be a genuine guy with a real deep-seated love of great American rock anthems. But it goes deeper than that as well, with his punk and gogo funk roots. He certainly has a wide musical experience growing up. All-in-all a very absorbing first couple of programs with the promise of more to come. I shall have to keep a beady eye on iPlayer from now on....
