2. Quite like my Ibanez Jazz-a-like bass (JJ) for stuff in standard tuning. PJ for the down-tuned stuff. Had an Ibanez ATK with an MM-style single pickup, which was great for a 5-banger. Looking at a J/MM arrangement a la Sandberg/Cort as my next-but-one bass
3. Here's a piccie HTH, Ian
4.
Hey chap - well - to be honest, any shelf that is the right size etc and doesnt cost stupid prices like the TC one is a serious contender to be honest! Pictures and measurements from anyone who has shelves available will be very much appreciated!
Cool! Just been out and retrieved said shelf - here are the measurements: front-to-back total depth = 255mm, tray size = 230mm x 440mm, white powder-coated steel, 2U. Piccies up tomorrow once I've got them off of my phone. HTH, Ian
5.
Resurrecting this old thread... seems the yanks have this available now in small numbers, first reports are glowing too... I have to say a 4lb GK head with 3 tubes and 500watts is really causing me some GAS problems! I wonder how long it will be before we see them over this side of the pond...ages probably Anyone else curious or even gagging?
Already got the GK MB500 + SansAmp - don't really see the Fusion as a real upgrade path. Now, if it had a stack more power and would go down to 2 Ohms, then I'd be interested! Think I'll stick with mine for now HTH, Ian
6.
A copy of Reaper - I dont do bass but I sometimes have a bit of a fiddle with a mix
Ooooh, me too!!! Plus I often bring my bass to work to have a noodle at lunch-time, especially if I've got a gig/practice straight after work Have been building a DAW using Reaper, and a couple of monitors (well, when I say 'monitors' I mean a 17" TFT as a secondary - the primary display is our works' Sony 40" HDTV). Reaper works a lot better on a big f***-off HD display (1080p) - oh, yeah!!! Ian
7.
Alex came back to me with the idea of using my sansamp through a power amp, sounds like a winner to me....and my wallet!
Sounds like a good plan I've got mine sitting in the FX loop of my GK head - feeds a crossover and one channel of a stereo power amp (400 + 400w into 4Ohms)
8. Great idea! There's a real dearth of Sandberg basses on YouTube - would be nice to see more reviews done with audio and/or video clips, just to get a feel for the instruments. Ian
9.
I'll bring a Spector or two, maybe a Wal and my Sansamp RBI/RPM rig with a Genz212 or two
Fantastic!! Look forward to seeing that SansAmp / 2x12 behemoth in action Looks like I'll just have the one bass with me (unless I can scrape up the necessary for a Squier VMJ in the meantime) Ian PS have some pedals looking for a good home - FS thread to follow, probably part with them on the day
10.
Hi Guys - I'm certainly interested and his a reply to both of you. I'm using a short rack case and can not go over 300mm deep. I can go to a maximum of 2u safely though. So if either of you can help, that'd be brilliant! Ideally, I am looking at a 2u tray that is around 250mm deep
Might be able to help you out with one - have one similar to it knocking around at home with nowt to do. I'll measure it up tonight depth-wise and give you a shout, maybe grab a piccie or two (plus I'm just down the road in Cambridge) HTH, Ian
11.
Need more amps then <snip> was just an idea to get taller than the guitarist and annoy him.
Totally like your thinking, there This might help (a little something I took to the last 'Bash) HTH, Ian
12.
I bought that Natural one on Sunday from them, worth the trip to Bristol, top blokes that own the shop.
Let us know how you get on with it, fella Well, I'll have to pay trip down there sometime when I have the moolah, see if they can get one in. But, looks like a seriously good deal. Nice one Ian
13. Squier Precision Special should tick all the boxes, and is considerably under 400 quid (less than 200 quid new at the mo) I've had mine for nearly a year - good all-round bass, and can do a wide range of tones, especially played over the bridge Jazz pup. HTH, Ian
14. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel The Letter - Joe Cocker Son Of A Preacher-Man - Dusty Springfield Money - Pink Floyd It's Your Thing - Isley Brothers Lots of other stuff that's fairly straight-forward IMO HTH, Ian
15. Oh bugger I'm having a crisis That Cali JM4 in natural is right tasty - need to stop looking at it though. No matter how I cut it, just don't have the thick end of a grand to splash out on one. And that sucks. Badly. Oh, well. One day..... Ian
16. Not me (surprisingly )
17. Having two basses in different tunings - guess it depends on my mood and the songs we're playing? For the funk jam night, I have been taking my Ibby (set up in Standard tuning), and then anyone else can pick it up and play as well. For church, had been taking my Squier tuned to D-standard (DGCF), with the Ibby as backup, but now I'm experimenting with a low A tuning, and I've lent my Ibby out to another player, so I'm down to one bass only! I'm starting to trawl through the second-hand ads looking for a cheap knockabout Jazz that I can keep in Standard tuning and also use as a platform for expansion later. Kinda where I am at the moment. To answer another question that has come up - no, I'd stick with just one bass for the entire set, unlikely I would swap out a bass mid-set, unless there was a major issue with the first bass, hence my foray into down-tuning. HTH, Ian
18. Interesting thread - I'll see if I can catch the program. Can't say I've had any regrets (apart from one - should have picked up the bass a lot sooner, rather than leaving it into my 30's). Nothing better than a Sunday morning, and everyone's up and dancing at the front - yep, that's pretty special. Started going to a funk jam here in Cambridge (in fact it's on Wednesday night) - it's getting me out and socialising, making contacts, having a bit of a blast TBH. And I'm learning new stuff, so another tick in the box. Also since joining the forum last year, I've bought (and moved on) a bass, bought a couple of cabs, and pedals. And made some new friends at Bashes. Got a great group of friends, and it's always interesting to see that the bass players all seem to congregate together. Ian
19.
Jerry Meehan is a great player, heard him on an Omar album a while back and he's damn funky. Used to be Chris Sharrock on kit who's a local guy, but he moved on to Oasis (Noel Gallagher apparently saw an opportunity to piss both his brother Liam off by hiring a Robbie Williams band member, and then piss Robbie off by stealing his drummer... hilarious move ). Yolanda Charles will always remain my favourite RW bassist though.
+1 on Yolanda Charles - underrated bassist IMHO. Did some good work with Paul Weller on 'Stanley Road' IIRC, and she was certainly playing live with RW at the Knebworth gig back in 2003 (pretty sure it was her, anyway) HTH, Ian
20. Ooooh, count me in too - 'tis a grand day out!! Date added to diary I'll hopefully be bringing the full monty - the 4x10, 1x15 and a couple of other bits. See you all there Cheers, Ian
21. It's Your Thing - Isley Brothers Funkily groovalicious bass line - that's what a Precision is all about! HTH, Ian
22.
Honestly?!? It's AWESOME! I have the two 2x12's stacked vertically with the top cab blasting the overdriven, grinding hi mids from the RBI..... and the bottom cab blasting the solid, thick, round & clean lows from the RPM.... Running each on a separate channel of the power amp means I can adjust the individual volume of each to find the perfect combination of thundering lows and grinding highs!
Oooh, just stumbled on this topic - don't normally peruse much in Effects (I think I'm all sorted at the mo', no efx GAS!) It's kinda what I've been doing with my rig (just set it up in the front room - haven't tried to do it at gig volumes....yet!) Have been using my GK head to drive the 4x10 and the line out into a power amp for the 1x15, with a SansAmp Paradriver DI feeding a couple of 1x12s. It was something I brought along to the London Bash a couple of months ago. Took a bit of setting up, but it kinda worked..... Recently tried something different with the GK feeding the two 1x12s vertically stacked (running clean), the line out goes into one half of a cross-over with the 1x15 being driven by the low summed output (x-over point is somewhere around 150-200Hz). SansAmp sits in the Efx loop of the GK, with the effected output going into the other half of the x-over, driving the 4x10 with just the mid/highs from the SansAmp. This way I can use the 1x12s for close monitoring, and the 4x10/1x15 stack sits behind me pumping out the low end and grittiness. Total amp and cab juice is somewhere around 1,200 watts HTH, Ian
23.
Nice one. Every musician with an electric instrument should get to grips with a soldering iron. If it's not your bass then it's some lead or connection that needs fixing.
I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron - been doing it for something like 20-odd years - but I still have pangs of nervousness when opening up my bass' control cavity (silly, really). I've made my own 1/4" leads, XLR cable and speaker cables, not to mention all other types of cables and extension cords. Think the toughest job was rewiring our stage multi (24 sends, 4 returns). Still, was glad I took the plunge and modded my spare bass (the Ibanez) HTH, Ian Here's a couple of piccies:
24. Ampeg......Schmampeg Lightweight heads are for teh winnorz (there, I fed the troll) Personally I like my GK head through the absurdly heavy EBS 4x10 - neatly placing my foot in both camps. Maybe one day I'll have an 8x10 fridge and a roadie, but I'm happy enough with what I've got at the moment, thank-you very much, ta, g'night all. Ian Troll-baiting since 2006
25. Me too - I'm in I'll see if the main auditorium in the Perse Girls school in Cambridge is free - any idea which day people would be gunning for? I ask because the church I go to hires the hall on a Sunday morning HTH, Ian
