It's definitely good to know that the PP2 fits under a PT Jr. Thing is that I want only 1 PSU 9V DC appears to be no problem for the DL4, but I don't want to fry my Space Station. So I'll have to look for a power brick that has (at least) one 9V AC power outlet. And that power brick has to fit under my PT Jr, as the top of it is already crammed with pedals.
The PP2 has an AC inlet pass-through on a three-pin IEC connector so you could (with a bit of tinkering) power a second PSU from that, and still only need one mains lead.

When I saw the price tag it made me wince a little (even for the floor unit) but after a bit of thought I realised that I'd probably spent close to a grand on pedals over the years, so it didn't seem so outrageous after all. The other thing that has interested me is the ability to configure it into "four cable" mode so you can use the pre-amp and power-amp section of your amp separately. If you wanna mess around with different amp models you can bypass your amps' pre section and just go straight into the power amp. Or use the pre-amp but add modulation in the chain. Or run an external effects loop with your favourite stand-alone pedals. Or all of the previous. Or lots of other cool stuff. The Andertons demos are quite comprehensive and worth a look when you get a chance Since I'm heavily into multiple amp, multiple effects chains and the like, this ticks some boxes for guitar modelling in particular. For all the pedals bar the Space Station I'd use the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2. Comes with isolated outputs. Can get brackets to fit it on the underside of the PT JR (I've got one on my Classic JR). Should be able to cope with the DL4 OK Can't do much with the Space Station as that is obstinately 9V AC - this may require a separate PSU unfortunately.
And after another week of burnt fingers and colorful language, today just might afford a first listen. I spent pretty much all day yesterday troubleshooting omissions and wiring errors, but at least I now have a test jig and a method for doing mods or repairs in the future. There are a few odds and ends in this pic that will need cleaning up eventually, but of course that's a never ending thing with DIY builds anyway.
That is looking extremely tidy nice thing about the Powercon, Speakon and XLR jack is they all use the same cutout profile
The power amp side uses JST connectors. ICE do not provide cable harnesses with OEM modules, and the pair of crimpers needed run ~$950. That's for the basic manual ones, the trick ones are considerably more expensive. I bought a couple of perfectly decent cable harnesses from a vendor in the ROC at $18 ea., shipped. But I agree, good tooling is generally worth whatever it costs.
That's the shape of things to come - it's far cheaper to have the harnesses made by a third party vendor. We do that a lot now with our volume production, especially PCB assemblies and cable harnesses. We have a good working relationship with a local sub-contract electronics manufacturer, and they've started sending our SMT boards overseas now. Yields are far better and any faulty boards now get binned rather than reworked. YMMV Ian
All connections will be broken out to quick disconnect terminals to facilitate modifications or service work.
As someone who spends a living doing this 9 -5 every day, I can testify to the need for everything to be disconnect-able, especially with prototypes We use Molex connectors for the vast majority of inter-board and wire-to-board connections. KK-100 system for low voltage / low current and Mini-Fit Junior for anything power related as it can handle 10A per pin at 250VAC. Anything else requires a specialised connector. Downside is the investment in tooling which can be considerable. It is worth it in the long run. HTH, Ian

New Pedal Day - the Obscura has arrived. Was modding my PT classic junior yesterday to fit the Palmer D'Acappo underneath so I could free up room for the Obscura. Very impressed with the quick turnaround from PMT. £106 including VAT & delivery. Also a shout out to DPD for really fast delivery and communication. Really dig the artwork - makes a change from the bland Boss-like enclosures of yesteryear. Nice that it comes with a pre-cut piece of Velcro ready to go - just pop the anti-slip rubber off first. Can't wait to get it home and give it the beans. Will be inserting it in my chain as follows: Bass > Palmer D'Acappo > Joyo OD (OCD clone) > Bass BMPi > Dunlop vol pedal > CEB-3 Chorus (stereo out) > Obscura (stereo) > Eterna Gold (one side only) > TC Flashback (stereo) > amp(s) Should be able to make some really long ambient-y swells happen now happy days Ian
-
I've got the Eterna Gold and it's very good with some lovely tails. I also have a Digitech Obscura Delay inbound as well. Let you know how it turns out! My chain will be going Boss CEB-3 Chorus > Obscura Delay > Eterna > TC Flashback Delay for some lovely reverby goodness
I'm sorry - I missed you question, my apologies ! I was going to go for the standard VVT, but as I have a couple of stacked pots in my bits box it's possible I'll use those instead.... Not sure really ! The series/parallel sounds interesting tho.
It's very similar to the Fender S1 option on the Jazzes - pops the mids up quite a bit as well as the overall volume
An And what "test" will we have Lozz presiding over this time? Will it involve cheap and (actually not at all) nasty Maplins speaker cabs?
Ooooh, does that mean that I can bring my entire rig then? Four 1x12's and four 1x10's woohoo! -
Dunlop have a mini wah out now, as do AMT... but if you want mini wah + mini volume in one unit, this is the only one I know of but it's not widely available yet: http://www.hotoneaud..._Pedal/127.html
Andertons do the Soul Press if that's of any use?

Hey dude! Looking good my friend Have you settled on the control layout yet? Are you going with the standard VVT controls? I found that modding my Ibanez Jazz clone with a series/parallel switch brought out some lovely mid tones that aren't as obvious when in normal parallel VVT mode. Should be a fairly simple mod with a pull pot or toggle switch. Interested to see how this build progresses! Ian

Could you not run a pre-power configuration i.e a decent preamp followed by a PA-type power amp, particularly one that could drive 4 Ohms per side? You'd then have independent control of the volume of each cab (if that was desirable?) Alternatively and if you already have a head that can drive 4 Ohms, use the line out or something to run another power amp that can handle 4 Ohms? Just some thoughts Ian
-
I just have my trusty beat-to-hell-and-back TU-2 on my board, right at the start of the chain (for muting). It's bombproof. That is all Ian
So here's a nice little update to the Bad Monkey request! (and thank you to those who have suggested some really cool alternatives) I love BassChat, it's full of really good people and one such came to my rescue and offered to send me their own Bad Monkey pedal to try out. Such a kind offer - but one thing led to another and we swapped some of our kit to seal a deal. I am very pleased to say that I am now a rather happy bunny as I own a Bad Monkey! It's making some great sounds in my set up already and I haven't even got to tweaking yet! Thank you so much Japhet, you're a star!
Sweet! Plus the 1. I love BC too for just this reason. Glad you got one in the end - plenty of scope to mod the beast. Just 30 secs on Google got plenty of hits (mostly Talkbass, but hey). I still run mine stock but with a bit of effort I reckon I could do some of the bass mods (and you're not a million miles away either if you' like yours done at the same time ) Ian
-
Did you ever finish this mod? Did wiring n parallel make the sound brighter and quieter? I see you are still logging in to BC!
Alas I moved the bass on to a friend around 2012, so never go to sorting out the wiring - sounded fine in series mode so left it at that Best results I've had so far have been with my Ibanez Jazz copy which I added a Series/Parallel toggle to do the same thing with the two pickups. One caveat is that one coil has to be RWRP though HTH, Ian
I'm in the process (and probably will for a while) of investigating! A custom route seems to make a lot of sense but I need to make sure I can nail a particular tone before committing it to a build. I'd like to put a Bad Monkey on the lab slab for a closer look though!
Our friend [SFX] here on the forum used to sell pre-modded Bad Monkeys - maybe drop him a PM?

I am definitely going to get slagged for this but

Here's a question - if the The Edge backed off with the frilly guitarist-y stuff and allowed AC more room to fill in the gap, would anyone like U2 more? Is it because we've come to expect certain things for rock bands i.e more inventive/melodic basslines? I guess if you've hit upon a winning formula why bother doing anything else different? (BTW not having a pop at U2 - quite like their earlier stuff. Not sure about anything post-millenium though) -
I seem to have exceeded my upload quota, so I've emailed Marco (Ghost_Bass) with the preliminary drawing PDF's of the assembly and front baffle Cheers, Ian
Hi Rich, interestingly enough, we have a plan for pre-amp/DI pedals for this year. Just got to hope I don`t end up with everyone having the same pedal, although if there`s only a few different types I`ll be able to go into the features a bit more, so should all still go well.
My SansAmp Para Driver is always on my board so that could be used as well (seeing as most folks have used one in the past and nearly everyone aims for that SVT tone anyway )
You`re gonna put Berg/Barefaced/Vanderkley out of business soon...............
Well as long as there's people willing to drop £600 on a cab, then there'll be others more than happy to help 'em spend it hehehehe
