1.
Boss Tuner + sometimes the Sansamp or Tonehammer.
Just started doing this myself - before I got the SansAmp I was going straight into the head, with a tuner on the 'Tuner Out', DI into PA Simples
 2. Grrr, I hate these kind of threads. Am now GAS'ing for a 4/5 string Sandberg Cali PM in LPB - they look stunning (just need to find that spare 1300 quid I have lying around....not!!) Thanks guys
 3.
The problem is essentially that our next gig is an halloween affair at a rugby club, i wouldn't want anyone drunkenly leaning on my stack, toppling it on some unsuspecting punter, or even worse, on more kit <snippity-snip>

Put them both on their sides and the head on top of the pile. Add side feet as required, or a thick layer of foam
Sounds like sound advice for kit and Halloween party patrons
 4. Hey Alex Good to finally catch up with you on Saturday. Can put a face to the name now! Glad I got the chance to see how my GK head faired into a single Compact (would have been even better to see how it stacked up on two Compacts, but we'll leave that for another day ) Anyway, my EBS cab is 4Ohms (which is a bugger) - just wondered how that would compare to a pair of neo 2x10 cabs (both 8Ohms). Ta, Ian
 5. Just taken a punt on a rather lovely walnut Squier Precision Special from DV (180 quid!!!). Noodled in the shop and it sounded fab - can't wait to try it on my rig when I get home!!! Looking at dropping the tuning down to D-Standard (DGCF) to start with, so I've got my bas(s)es covered tuning-wise (I'm keeping my Ibby in E or maybe Drop-D). Eventual aim is to do the bridge/nut for ADGC and MM p'up, but I can wait a year on that Anyway, looking forward to gigging with it.
 6. Howdy All Glad I made it! Long trip down from Cambridge, but well worth it. Got the pedals I've been after (Thanks Silddx!!) - used them yesterday morning in anger, and was seriously impressed with the Para Driver (sorted!) Also thanks to Alex and the rest of the guys for the demos and workshops, and to Nik + Hamster for the organisation of the event. Was impressed with the sound of my GK head into the Compact - had lots of comments about that. Anyway, looking forward to the next one (and maybe one in East Anglia for all those 'norf of da rivva') Chilled day out See you all soon, Ian
 7.
Can't it be done using iPhones etc?
What happened to cold, hard cash?

 9.
HAve you looked at the MB2 from GK...... I tried the Markbass & Genz and the GK was the one I bought.... much bigger/warmer sound to it
Plus the one for the GK head (see my sig and other threads on this) - super impressed with it (500w of goodness into 4Ohms ) Good luck with the search Ian
 10. OMG that looks sooo tasty - really like the idea of a P+HB bass atm. *Thinks* Might be PM'ing you shortly - need to check on funds Ta, Ian
 11. Can I have a go??? (Taken at friends' wedding a couple of weeks ago - concentrating hard!)
 12.
This is the route I would go. with a little care, you can find an outstanding neck and body on one of these, allowing you to spend more of your money on the upgrades etc. Also, IMO, your upgrade cash will go further as there will be a bigger and more appreciable benefit over the stock components... FWIW, I have one of the Squier P Bass Specials myself - as a lefty, this was the only bass in the Squier range when I bought. Still the only P Bass Fender do left handed, shy of the US Std P Bass. I really like mine - the P pup in particular gives a fab sound. I'm keeping an eye out for a lefty P Bass body and a maple boarded neck, though, as I want to use this as a donor guitar to build myself a more traditional style P-type. I'll be using as much as possible of the original hardware - really I'll just be jettisoning the neck and the body - though I may fit an upgraded bridge. TBH, though, if only it came with a maple board, I'd quite possible be keeping it whole, but if I'm gonig the length of repalcing th neck, I might as well go the whole hog and go for the traditional P single pup layout I prefer.... when new to the bass from guitar, I found the slimmer, J-type neck much easier to get along with than many other basses I've tried. Though I now want something more "57" in style, objectively speaking, the P Bass Special as stock is a great set up. I've seen quite a few pro acts using them all stock - great platform for mods. As would be any of the Squiers, really. I do thik the MIMs are a step up (if only I could buy a lefty of that P Bass, I would have already), but if you're gonig to upgrade components to the degree you're talking about and refinish, it's debateable IMO whether you would really benefit from the MIM over the Squier.
Okey-doke. That's made me feel a whole lot better! I'm going to see if I can get one to try out (either Digital Village in Cambridge, or maybe a visit to the Bass Merchant). I may stay with the PJ configuration for a while, then upgrade to an MM after the warranty runs out! Defo upgrading the bridge tho'. Also want to re-string with thicker strings (for ADGC thinking 0.135/0.115/0.090/0.070, will have to file the nut considerably) Got a lot of options here, but thanks for all your replies so far
 13.
How about one of the Squier precision specials. It has a jazz pick up at the bridge, so less routing. Cheap as chips to pick up as well.
Looks quite good - although not sure about the Jazz-neck-on-a-Precision-body idea - would prefer to have an all-precision bass as the donor. Got lots to think about - might be back to ask questions about MM pickup wiring - not sure how the whole series/single/parallel thing works (already JFGI'd ) Thanks all
 14.
I'd be looking out for a MIM Precision Deluxe and doing some upgrading on that perhaps?
Hmm, now that could be a plan, since there's already a route in the body for the Jazz pickup, maybe enlarging it wouldn't be quite so much of a hassle. Good idea! BTW, I've seen references to the MM pickup 'sweet spot' - just wondered if someone could clarify that in terms of where that might be? Closer to the bridge or maybe centred over a harmonic of the string? Anyway, thanks for the replies so far guys!
 15. Yep, the costs could outweigh the benefits - but I'm looking for some extra customisation on the bass - besides a previously-owned Sandberg is still a tad expensive, and they don't come up for sale too often. And I'm still looking to re-string it and drop the tuning down to ADGC (so the nut will need filing out) Still, it's an option Thanks so far
 16. Need some advice fellas. Having a bit of a GAS attack after seeing the Sandberg California range, particularly the PM. I'm looking for a project bass at the moment - fancy acquiring a 4 string P-bass to strip down and re-fin, re-pup and re-string. 1) Replace the stock Precision p'up 2) Fit a MM style p'up at the bridge 3) Replace the bridge (probably with a BadAss II) 4) Re-fin the body - thinking of Lake Placid blue with white scratchplate 5) Re-string and detune to ADGC - need advice on setting up (trussrod etc), string gauges and p'up selection 6) Control-wise, need some advice on whether to go with VVT + MM p'up select, or stacked VT + separate blend + MM p'up switch. Bearing mind I would prefer to go all passive, I'm looking for advice on pickup selection and strings. I can get a new MIM '08 P-bass for about 400 notes, would this be a suitable platform to start from? Also does anyone know of a luthier in the Cambridge area who could do the pickup routing? Thanks guys
 17. I quite like Flea's bassline on 'Rolling Sly Stone' - nice and punchy Paul Weller (well, his session bassist anyway) - 'Has my Fire Really Gone Out', '5th Season', 'Shadow of the Sun', 'Whirlpools' End' (convinced that last one is all about his washing machine packing up, but I think I've missed the subtext . Cool bassline tho')
Debaser - Pixies. Not complicated but Kim hits the spot for me!
Not my cup of tea, but prefer 'Where is my Mind' - simple, understated, fits in the mix nicely. Perfect antidote to a slow Friday afternoon stuck at work!
 18. Paul Weller's group circa 1990 - 1995 (Wild Wood & Stanley Road era) 1995 - mid-2000's - Radiohead Today, well, probably Muse
 19. Played at my mates wedding celebration in Cambridge yesterday - pretty awesome. Nervous as well, not been playing for a few weeks tbh, and only got the set list Wednesday, so a few days of intense practice, and.....it went fine! Glad I could relax later, reception was great, and bride and groom were very happy - job done
 20.
Come on, own up - you must have at least been hoping to get a shag out of it...........
Is it not possible in this day and age for me to have no ulterior motive, that I would like to do something nice for a friend?
All the way to reply #19 before this came up? Sometimes this forum disappoints me.
+lots Really thought that starting this thread would be uplifting, and inspire us all to be better people.
 21. Wow!! I'm really touched by all the replies so far. I think Bassassin hits the nail on the head It was a chance for me to give someone something back for the kindness and friendship I've received over the last couple of years Ian
 22. Well, had an interesting weekend I'd lent my 5-string Ibanez bass out to friend so she could practice with it and play live Friday and over the weekend at church. Now, I'd picked this bass up second-hand off BC, and had restrung it as well, and it had become my main gigging bass, but wasn't too worried as I've hit a bit of a playing slump at the moment Was really impressed with how quickly she had taken to it - unfamiliar bass, never really played a 5'er before, new songs to learn etc. So as an altruistic gesture, gave her the bass to keep at the end of Saturdays' afternoon set. 'Must be mad', I hear you say. Well, no, because I felt I wasn't getting the most from this bass - couldn't get on with the string spacing, and I could see how much she enjoyed playing it. So, yes, it's a sacrifice, and I can't believe I've done it, but I feel the bass has gone to a good home, and will be played by someone who will really appreciate it. Ramble over and to the point I've been labouring to reach - have any of my fellow BC'ers been led to do something like this? Ian
 23.
30. Bottle - Ibanez ATK-305NT, Gallien-Krueger MB2-500, EBS Pro-line 4x10
Still coming but not bringing the 5-er (it's been moved on to another owner) - instead will be bringing my trusty Ibanez GSR-180 in a delicious black and tobacco grainburst. Maybe a few effects pedals as well. See ya all there Ian
 24.
out of interest what kind of sound do u get from this? Im also fairly interestd in the 700rbII
Head was my MB2-500, haven't tried a 700RBII yet During the rehearsals had the amp sat on the cab and rolled off some of the bass and treble, bit of mid to cut thru the mix (two guitarists and a loud drummer). When we went for the recording, put the amp/head in another room with a snake under the door, DI'd out from the bassists Sansamp, AKG D112 in front of the cab - rolled off a lot of the treble, bit of mids and bass up to fit the AKG's response. All-in-all a very punchy sound. Hopefully will speak to the rec. engineer this week - maybe get some of the isolated bass tracks up. HTH
 25. Got a GK head a few weeks back - used it in the studio last weekend (see this thread) Uber-impressed with it now it's been used in anger - was rather nervous for a while! Still, glad to see someone else grab a GK - good luck with it! All the best, Ian
