I'm only coming if you bring along some ridiculous piece of cheap tat that makes my expensive boutique kit sound pathetic in comparison.
Deal! How about a nice Maplins 1x10 PA cab just 'cos it's cheaper than it's 12" cousin?

Don't think there's anything else on the calendar so I'll tentatively say 'Yes'

South East Bass Bash 2016 - Addlestone, Surrey, Saturday 24th September

Added to Calendar. Should be OK for this one -
Situations change and life moves on. There are times when people may take a long break from playing. In which case there is not much point (or interest) in having a "bass chat".
I'm in somewhat of strange place at the moment - not been playing much and struggling to find the motivation to keep it going. I still check in on here on the odd occasion and post sometimes, but nowhere near as much as before. I'm getting into modular synths in a small way - greater scope for some DIY'ing.
The Corona by TC. I also like selecting the 'MOD' preset on the Flashback delay and turning the delay off (!!)
Clever! Never tried that with mine
Boss - light blue thingy
I have the bass-specific CEB-3 but there's no reason why the CE-3 or -5 shouldn't work
You said that last year
Bugger Well, this year I'm definitely coming hehehe

Added a few pedals to my board this year: EHX Micro POG Octaver TC Flashback Delay Mr Black Eterna Gold So far my fave(s) are the TC and the Eterna - together they form the core of my ambient-y goodness.
-
Howdy I'm free that day - added date on calendar. Will let you know closer to the time what gear I can bring, but likely to be an Ibanez bass, Line 6 Lowdown 110, amp rack and effects boards. Cheers, Ian

I've heard good things about the the Wren & Cuff Suppa Phat Phuk as it's a hybrid Germanium and FET OD.
-
I built the WM clone a few years ago. Decided it wasn't quite the right effect for me (and it doesn't play nice with active basses either), but YMMV. Still, it was a cool little project to put together. Ian
I still don't like a lot of movement in my chorus, but a nice bit of chorus with low depth and speed sounds great to my ears now on an otherwise clean bass part. I also like using it after fuzz and with octaves for a synth sound.
I usually dial mine in for just a smidgen of wobble, not too much, but enough that you can hear it with the reverb and delay on - makes a massive difference to the decay tails.
EDIT to say that IMO chorus is one of the easiest effects to get a terrible sound out of, if you don't know what you're doing! A good example to my ears for chorus in a modern, non-1980's setting is the bass player from Death From Above. His distorted bass tone has a great chorus-ey vibe to it. I think he uses an old Ibanez pedal?
Have to agree - took me a long while to get it just right. Was on the verge of giving up on it but after adding the reverb and delay pedals after it and a POG before it, makes a lot more sense now
Might have to play about with the chorus on my amp simulator. My only experience with chorus was buying a new microphone from ADK in Nashville. I went straight to my friends studio to show off my toy, we plugged it into his desk, and he played acoustic guitar through it. it was the most glorious sounding acoustic guitar recording I'd ever heard, I couldn't believe what the mic had pulled out of the guitar. Then I noticed the send pot up, "what's on send one?" yup it had a touch of chorus on it and it made a massive difference. If I ever have to record acoustic guitar it will have a smidge of chorus that's for sure.
That's an interesting use - hadn't considered using it on acoustic. I'll have to suggest that to the lady who plays acoustic with us at church. Ian
Can I ask what sort of music (other than GnR tributes) you guys are using Chorus on? Any examples?
I run my Chorus in stereo into a Mr. Black Eterna Gold and a TC Flashback delay for some spacey ambient sounds - I get my inspiration from a YT'er called Andy Othling for some wacky space ambience
-
I like my Boss CEB-3, it has just the right amount of wobble for me
I also recently tried out the Digitech Polara, and was stunned for the Plate/Halo/Mod/Hall regular type reverb sounds. The Spring is pretty OTT though, but usable!
I've been looking at this one for a second 'verb pedal for my board and think it looks very interesting
If you want a Shimmer, doesn't get much better than the Mr Black Eterna. The EQD Afterneath is also awesome for modulated madness Si
Based on a couple of recommendations, YT videos and Si's experience I recently got the Eterna Gold version - it's absolutely stunning for long-tail reverb with shimmer octave-up type stuff. Works well with an EHX Micro-POG in front of it too
I don't think there was a worst. All the gear was top notch and I thought you couldn't get a fag-paper between most of it. It just came down to what sounded good to your ears at the time. I thought the Berg pretty good yesterday, but I've heard the same cab in a different room with a different bass and head and was not impressed.
I agree. There was nothing in the shoot-out I would avoid at all costs if gigging etc. They all had their plusses and minuses. I personally didn't like the tone from the Schroeders - too much top end, and was a little disappointed with the BareFaced cabs. I could't put my finger on it, it's so subjective, but they just didn't appeal to me. On the other hand, I thought the Berg 2x12 was great and even the little 4x5" carried some real punch. Would I go for the Berg if I had the money? Sure, who wouldn't. Can I justify one right now? Nope. I'm happy with my PA cabs for the place where I'm playing at the moment. If I was regularly playing a bigger venue then I might consider an upgrade, but I don't need to right now.
church! bloody hell! andy
My thoughts exactly, but more heaven than hell hehehe. TBH I use a Micro POG too, coupled with a Bad Monkey OD and a SansAmp
Assuming were talking about this one: http://www.maplin.co...e-speaker-n93fn Would definitely be an interesting project to analyse the dimensions of this cab and see if there are any potential drop in replacements for the driver from the likes of eminence or beyma.
Yep, that's the one! TBH mine are about ten years old and don't have the Speakon connectors, and I got them on offer with a power amp at the same time. Pretty good for a basic two-way trap. cab. I normally run them as a pair at 4 Ohms total to get the most out of the valve amp (and I have a sneaky third cab running low-passed from a rack crossover - yes, another Pro-Sound special!) And BTW, the valve amp is now finished - see my earlier build thread. It's a 4W single-ended amp based on the Fender Tweed Champ design, and works well with the cabs if you don't mind a smidge too much top end

Thoroughly enjoyed the Bash, many thanks to all who organised the day. Looking forward to next year, and the Herts bash too ATB, Ian -
But, is it any good for Scrap Metal?

Loading the car up right now see you all in a couple of hours! -
nice! btw, which X-over do you use - SFX X&M, or something else?
It's all racked up - I use a Behringer two-channel rack comp feeding either side of a Pro-Sound (Maplin) X-over, then the low-summed output goes into a Pro-Sound power amp. The hi-passed signal is balanced and sent to my FX board via a Palmer D'Accapo re-amp box (reverse Di thingy)
This kind of stuff makes me cringe, I'm sure your doing your best without them having to attack your character.
But in this case, I was wrong and she was most definitely right, as I had been a right arse, throwing my toys out of the buggy. Made me take a real hard look at myself and my motivation for playing. This quote was in my FB news feed tonight: "Always look at other musicians as inspiration, never as competition"
A lot of you know I play in a church music group. Instrument wise we have 1x 12 string, 1x 6 string, me on bass and a keyboard player + 4 or 5 singers. Bear with me here. about 3 months ago we had a new youth worker start at the church, he happens to play a double bass, our minister recently retired and we had a farewell service for her and the church was full. Imagine my surprise when I arrived to find the youth worker there with his DB. I asked him if he was going to play it alongside me and he said yes. I said one bass is enough for a small band like ours but he played anyway. This guy never asked if it was ok to play, never came to a practice or said anything to us which I thought was damned rude! Long story short it is our new minister's induction service this sunday so I rang this guy and asked if he was planning to play again and he said yes so I asked him not to and after some to'ing and fro'ing he backed down. Am I being too precious about this? I really think his manners and etiquette are poor. thanks.

Agreed. We have two drummers, two bass players, two electric guitarists, three keyboard players, and a yet to be counted number of folks who play acoustic guitar that play from time to time in the worship group at our church. The only thing we've never doubled up on at a service is drums (and that's because there's only one kit). Lots of other percussion is being played though! We who comprise the core group are skilled enough to where we can accomodate and "smooth over" the little hiccups that happen when playing with less experienced musicians. Our rehearsals are always open, and attendence by those outside the core group is always encouraged but never mandated. I think that everyone in the core part of the band agrees: this is NOT our band. It belongs to the Lord. Our efforts are generated and focused on the worship experience of the congregation, and humbly using our talents as love offerings to the Lord. Far be it from me, or anyone else in the core group, to diminish the joy of someone bringing their music or talent and presenting it as an offering before the throne of grace. Far be it from me, or anyone else in the core group, to tell someone that their presence or contribution to the worship experience is not wanted. It's NOT our band. The sound may not be as PURE as we'd like it to be sometimes but, we are not playing for our ears. All we focus on, and strive to do, is to offer up a "joyful noise" to our creator. <><Marc
@OP Aye, it's a tricky one. I've had experience on both sides of the fence. TBH you both sound like really enthusiastic players and worshippers, and that's to be commended. I don't think you're being too precious - if etiquette had been observed, the guy should have at least approached the worship leader (your wife) first and maybe gone to a rehearsal or two before being invited to join the worship team/band. To just tip up and start playing is just bad manners. However I have been guilty of being a little too enthusiastic and precious about playing in a large multi-instrument worship band (it's MY slot/turn to play etc etc) and I've had to be rebuked by the leader (and she was right to do so). I've had to go back to basics and improve on some of my key skills etc and also work on my humility too at the end of the day (and I agree with DO6) we are not there to 'play a gig' - we're there to lead the congregation to a place of worship that honours and glorifies our Lord, and to do that we have to take a step back from the 'look at me' mentalilty. Ultimately we all are blessed with different gifts and it's up to the Lord to determine how they are used. I know from my own experience that being in a worship team that works together for that goal can be so much more than the sum of its parts, and that it's brought a sense of meaning and purpose back into my playing. The point that I'm trying to make is that there's so much out there to offend us, don't let it come between you and God. Have a friendly chat with the guy, maybe get together with the rest of the worship team and see if you can agree on a rota or something. It's really not worth the hassle of getting bent out of shape over TBH. Anyway, good luck and God Bless Ian

Sorry for the long gap in updates - the build is now FINISHED!!!! Yay! Needed a bit more sanding and finishing off, with several more coats of varnish but it now looks superb. I'll collect all the build photos together in one place (probably set up a Flickr account to handle everything) and post the linky up here
