Sorry chaps Please don't tell my mum! I did try a ‘bleeped-out’ version of the lyrics and another one without the expletives, but it just didn't sound like the same song without all the swearing. Very shallow, I know. I was actually sort of ‘inspired’ by a famous rant from the now deceased blogger Ashley Morris, who wrote a lot of stuff in reaction to the US Govt’s (mis)handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. I wasn't a follower of his blogs... but I do follow the Treme drama series on HBO (well worth a watch - superb music in it) in which one of the characters, played by John Goodman, is based on Morris. I can’t write the title of his famous rant here as it’s exceptionally sweary - and ended up on T-shirts across the States - but I do think it's a great example of swearing being used in the right context. If you’re interested you can read about it on his Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia....orris_(blogger) I won't link to the blog itself because the title will just hit you in the face, but you can find it quite easily.
Hehehehe, honestly, I can't think of a way that the track would work without the lyrics - and yes, it's supposed to make a political statement. Nothing wrong with a good riot every now and then just to shake things up! Well done anyway, it's a cracker. Just edged out by Lurks and Old_Ben, but that's just my taste EDIT: just went to the Wikipedia page and, yes, definitely NSFW.......FYYFF! hehehe

Wow, where does the time go? I can't believe I've been on here for nearly six years. Seen a lot change on the forum - good to meet up with lots of like-minded peeps at bashes Keep up the good work Shell
Cor, just listened to them all. Great work fellas! Swayed by the vocals on lurks & skols, adds an extra dimension & difficulty of lyrics but then moved by bilbos compositional skills too. My decision goes to old ben though, i cant resist a good bit of riffage!

I voted the same for the same reason
Pretty much summed up my reasons for voting for Old_Ben too - just ticked all the boxes Lurks was a classic Skols', great tunage, just a bit too sweary for me (I'm no shrinking violet, just a little too much for my delicate ears ). Awesome in the right context though

I nearly had the same hiccup with a Behringer Ultra DI-100 (you know, the one with the extruded aluminium case). The input jacks have a metal ground sleeve which is in direct contact with the chassis. Had exactly the same problem, particularly when using my power amp in bridged mode i.e neither speaker connection is referenced to the amp chassis ground. The only time I can see this working is if the DI box can isolate the input jacks from the chassis and you are able to ground lift the XLR output and the DI can cope with >55V input voltage swings In this case, a passive DI with an isolated transformer would be better I guess.
I use one of those Dymo label printers and a piece of clear shrink sleeve over the top of it to stop the label from getting worn\peeling off.
Exactly what I was going to suggest - I do that with all my special cables (i.e expensive starquad Mic cables etc). A roll of clear heatshrink will probably set you back a tenner from RS/Farnell (more if you go to Maplins etc). Only really feasible if you're making cables up. Much harder to do with pre-assembled cables. The other suggestion is to get the plugs with coloured cable reliefs (like Neutrik jack plugs and XLR's). Makes identifying the correct cable in a multi-core soo much easier too (I use the resistor colour code and/or labels and/or engraved plugs too). I roll (and coil) my own

Voted! Tough this month, but looked at the picture, and picked the one track that I thought most embodied the spirit of the artwork (or somesuch, I've been on the sauce again so I could be talking complete sh*te) Very well done to everyone this month - exceptional standard of entries

Watching Ep 2 on BBC4 right now
Glad they're working out well!
Yep, the Ultimate Drive is my favourite so far. It has just enough control in front of the SansAmp to give a good kick. There are some mods that can be done on the UD to make them more bass-friendly so I will need to look into that. The Vintage suits the BBM Pi better (whenever I need a smidge more 'hair') Cheers

How to best fill a 1U space on my bass rack
Bottle replied to dadofsix's topic in General Discussion
SansAmp RBI / RPM / PSA-1 or equivalent -
I just bought an Us Dream (a Suhr Riot clone) £24 delivered, amazing tone, the chaps at Joyo really know what they're doing.
I Predict A (Suhr) Riot
Good point, the fact that I didn't even think to mention the quality of such cheap pedals says a lot about how good they are! I had the JF-01 and Ultimate Drive, and both were excellent bits of kit. I moved them on in a very rare attempt to cut down on pedals, and then only as someone on here mentioned that they were after them just as I was trying to consider what to move on! I still have the Sweet Baby overdrive too, which sounds great on guitar, but also needs a blend for bass. Top quality gear for the price.
Indeed they are! I bought the pedals off of Andy (Jus Lukin) and have been very impressed with them. I tend to run a grab-it-and-go set up for church band - TU-2 Tuner > JOYO Ultimate Drive > Sansamp Para Driver DI > Desk. This setup fits in very nicely The Vintage Drive goes infront of a Bass Big Muff Pi when I want more grit i.e JOYO VOd > BBM Pi > Boss CEB-3 Chorus > Amp

I think this one is a distinct possibility. Just did a quick route plan in Google Maps and it's only a couple of hours away I'll know more closer to the time if I can make it, but it's on my radar now Cheers, Ian

Yep, I caught the last half last night. I'll try to catch the next one next Friday. IIRC it's a three-part series exploring the history of recorded sound. Right up my alley

Just remembered Thomas Newman's score from "Meet Joe Black"
I did roughly the same as the OP, all settings on the amp at midday, Blend on the Sansamp on full, Gain set to just a bit of breakup, plus a boost on highs to give some presence. But ultimately the lack of mid controls meant I sold it.
That was the one thing about the Bass Driver that put me off - so I plumped for the Para Driver instead. Much more versatile and adjustable. I seem to like mine with a little more mids present and I can dial in the mids centre frequency with the smaller pot. I also don't like 100% wet mix - too much of the instruments' character is lost so I've opted for somewhere around a 25 - 50% wet mix, which seems to sound much nicer. EDIT: I should also say that I have also been trying out adding some drive in front of the SA - at the moment my go-to OD is a JOYO Ultimate Drive (gain down a bit, level up a bit, tone to suit)
Just to put this to bed, I've had a scout on Looperman & there's so much useable stuff on there, it's a great site. I added a couple of blues drum loops to my library and it will be my first port of call in future. Also I've spoken to my brother & he's building me a new desktop to meet my needs, he said I'll have a much better machine for less money this way & I now have the license for Reason too. Thanks Dad & Bottle for the input. Steve
No worries fella, and good luck! Enjoy the fun of recording new music
Howard Shore's Lord Of The Rings soundtracks are one hell of an achievement. I am less enamoured of the Hobbit series but they have their moments.
Bilbo, have you checked out his earlier collaborative work with David Cronenberg vis a vis eXistenZ etc? very haunting and atmospheric
Gladiator with Lisa Gerard and Hans Zimmer
+1 for this as well I also like Hans' later works like Pirates of the Caribbean and Inception OST

Just throwing my tuppence in the ring. Is there room on stage to get a full drum screen round (or at least gobo off the bass drum)? If mic'ing the bass drum from the 'front' i.e resonant side is problematic could the PA engineer use a modified spaced pair a la the RecorderMan technique to get the full kit sound?
After giving up on cubase I've installed Reaper and I should have done it ages ago but my old antiquated laptop is having a hard time keeping up. I plan on replacing it for a better specced machine but I'm not likely to do that before my free trial runs out. So, question one is, if I buy my license now will I then have to buy it again for the new laptop or is reaper user transferable Also why I have the attention of the recording experienced, can someone point me in the direction of a trusted site for samples, it's mostly drums I'm after. Thanks folks Steve
I've got a Reaper licence and as Dad says, it's 100% transferrable to another machine if/when you upgrade. I managed to get the non-commercial licence when Cockos had a special offer on so I only paid $45 for the whole thing. Bargain! Cheap as chips and is valid all the way up to Version 5.99 (they're up to V4.76 at the moment)
Were also doing this in our set , I'm getting a pretty decent sound for this using an inexpensive Digitech Synth wah on envelope down setting with the sensitivity right up and playing finger style real hard when i want the envelope to really open towards the end of bits , sounds good on the climbing run and slide back too. Eats 9 volts like a demon though. :-( ... not one if you dont/ cant use a 9 volt adapter , 3 x 9 volts eaten in the course of two weeks its got to the point where I'm unplugging it pre and post song. I've got an inkling from the live performances its Jamareo Artis , getting funky on this one , i like his work a lot.
If it's the Digitech Bass Synth Wah then I'm not surprised you've gone through that many batteries - IIRC consumption is around 300mA at 9V so definitely not recommended to run off of a battery. In fact I think the manual mentions to only use batteries for testing and to use a PSU all the time.
Hi Ian, it will indeed mate! Hopefully within the next fortnight. I'll post up a new Mixing Challenge thread as soon as it's ready. Cheers, Paul
Fantastic! I think that'll be a better exercise for me than trying (and failing) to get inspiration for the Composition stuff - I'm struggling to get out of C-Major and E-Minor ruts at the moment

New Year, new ideas..... still stumped for a way in at the moment BTW Skol, will the Mix Challenge be resurrected for 2015? Ta, Ian
The only jacks that I will ever entertain using are the Neutrik Professional (NP) series because the business end is a one piece construction i.e. no rivet joining the solder tag to the jack. The regular right-angled versions (NP2RX) are workhorse connectors and I've never had one of those fail. There is one exception and that is the right-angled Silent jack which is inherently weak and has a tendency to come apart with heavy use.
That has been my experience so far. I've made nearly all my own cables and the only failure I've had was one of the first generation Neutrik Silent R/A plugs. The newer ones are better but since getting a floor tuner/mute I don't need the mute-when-unplugging feature of the jack plug, so I use standard R/A plugs now on all my instruments.
