Surely, as the humble fret is one of the crucial points of contact where the energy of the vibrating string is being directly transferred to the body of the instrument, there should be more scientific analysis in the field of frets. I say we should be given a choice! When will manufacturers realise this and start producing brass, bone, carbon fibre, aluminium, solid gold, and composite resin frets? Eh? Eh?

I had a Carlsbro Cobra combo when I was about 15. It was crap. The second worst amp I've had was some Acoustic thing: small rack-mountable head and a 2x15 cab with power amp built-in. It didn't sound very good and the power amp in the cab spontaneously combusted during rehearsal! Still, beats having to buy pyrotechics or a smoke machine I suppose....

Hello. I have a Status Vintage P bass, and it's great! Really well made instrument, with a lovely sound. Mine is the single humbucker model. As it has both active and passive circuitry you can go from a super warm bassy tone all the way through to quite a bright hi-fi tone. The F hole doesn't really add anything much - I guess the cavity in the body behind the hole just saves a bit of weight. The graphite neck is standard P bass width, but has a quite shallow back - quite like the Fender Precision 57 reissue. I can't comment on the price or waiting time as I bought mine second-hand - don't even know how much one would cost new or how long it would take to deliver. I think BCer Happy Jack has the PJ model - so if you want info about that version maybe give him a shout?

*raises hand* I write music, but don't do lyrics. Typically I will write a whole 'song' but I leave it up to vocalists to provide input and write the lyrics.

Nick Fyffe: ex-Jamiroquai. Some of his basslines are easily up there with Staurt Zender's and Paul Turner's.

To the OP: I wouldn't worry too much - the only people who are going to be aware that you have a 'fancy' bass are going to be in the minority (a percentage of other bass players). The last time I used the fanciest of my basses - the Music Man Cutlass 1 - was in a Polish shopping centre on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon. I used to own an old Astra van and load it all up with my bass gear, which at the time included an 8x10 cab. I had a bass in a flight case laying on top of the cab lengthwise and braked heavily - which led to a flight case/back of the head interface situation. Not recommended.
