Hello T40 fans, I know nothing about this basses and have never tried one, but I spotted one for sale here in Poland so just thought I'd post a link to the ad for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy! I'm going to add to this festival of massaging Owen's ego by telling you all that he is a splendid friendly chap who is most helpful. I bought some strings off him for a bargainous price, the transaction went very smoothly, and he popped them in the post straight away. 10/10! ps: they did take 3 weeks to arrive, but that just serves me right for buying them from him just at the height of the Xmas postage madness period. Doh!

First gig set-up (1984): Aria SB 'Black & Gold I' and Fender JV Precision > Boss chorus, flanger, octaver and MXR phaser stompboxes > Carlsbro Cobra 90 combo. If you check out my sig, you will notice I still have all of this gear - apart from the sh*tey Carlsbro. Yes, I am a gear hoarder Current gig set-up: usually StingRay 4 or StingRay 5 > Digitech BNX3 > Ampeg SVT3 Pro + Ampeg 410 & 115 cabs.

For 'guitar' bands, 4 strings is enough for me. Unless there is some drop tuning going on. For 'keyboard' bands, the 5th string is handy. 6 strings is too much for me as I have relatively short fingers...
The only signature bass worth considering.
What a bargain!
-
As this is the only signature bass I have ever owned, then by default it has to the Rickenbacker 4001 C64S. I know that virtually all the members of BC don't like Rickenbackers, and even the ones who do will probably turn their noses up at the reversed headstock, but frankly my dears I don't give a damn...
-
So to sum up, we have an 'S9' serial on the headstock - which could date anywhere from 1978 to 1981, and pot codes from 1980 and 1981. I'm gonna take a wild stab in the dark at 1981!

This is my pick of choice, the Jim Dunlop nylon range - actually I use the grey .88mm not the .60mm in the picture - and believe me I've been through bloody loads of different types over the years. They have a bit of flex, they have a 'grippy' bit which is handy when you get sweaty mitts, and they don't crack or chip. You also get a nice 'rasp' if you play using them at an angle where the edge of the pick rubs over the wind of the string. I bought a bag of 100 of them about 14 years ago, and still have about half of them left. The others were 'borrowed' and never returned by guitarists....
Get an old 80's Steinberger!
OMG, I'm in shock!!! For once you had the perfect opportunity to big up the Kubicki ExFactor - which as we both know although a bit marmite, is very light, very ergonomically-shaped, and has a great range of sounds - and you opted instead for a Steinberger! For the OP: you should also consider a Status, if you have a reasonable budget and don't mind their looks.

I can categorically state that I know of no better English bassplayer than me in Warsaw!

I played an outdoor gig in January in Poland a couple of years ago and the outside temperature was -10 degrees. On-stage heating was supplied by the rather large lighting rig and one of those 'rocket-engine' type space heaters. I had no problems at all with the trusty StingRay 5 - I took it straight out of the gigbag, played for an hour, and stuck it straight back in. No condensation, no movement of the neck, nothing. I just had problems with keeping my fingers warm! At the start of the gig my hands were chilly and it took a couple of songs for them to warm up, but towards the end of the set I really started to struggle and the last song was a nightmare - my fingers started to go really numb and lose dexterity. I ended up jamming my hand into my trouser pockets between songs.... So I would definitely recommend using fingerless gloves or something to keep your mitts warm!
Originally a blue 4001.
Yeah, yeah, that one is the ultimate Ric porn shot. If memory serves me correctly you've taken shots of other Rics too, right?

Dunno if there is a specific Rickenbacker thread or not, but feel free to add pics of your own to this one. Anyway here's my offering: my 2003 Rickenbacker 4001 C64S. Maybe it was custom built by a Mexican though...?
-
Arse! I was just scrolling down to the end of the thread to add 'Relax' Surely even Doddy and Essential Tension have heard of that one.
-
Thanks for all the input, guys. TBH I'm not really a 'sizzle' kind of bloke - unless I'm frying sausages - so I'm going to try to give one a test run. And yeah, that Yogi Beedster pic is really quite disturbing...

The last place I visited here in Warsaw is called Quality Studio - so of course I was immediately skeptical - but in fact it had surprisingly good bass equipment: an Eden WT800 running through an Epifani 410, an oldish Trace Elliott 4x10 combo (dunno which model), and a Phil Jones Suitcase. They had a massive array of different guitar set-ups too, two nice drumkits and even a grand piano! All for the princely sum of £7.50 an hour.

Yep, I've heard that comment before. I don't suppose it's too much of a problem with a StingRay though...

I've seen lots of love for the TC Electronic RH450 and it's corresponding cabs here on BC, but then have also seen that a few people have bought them and consequently sold them on after quite a short period of time. Which leads me to ask why? Who on here has NOT got on with the RH450, and why was it not doing it for you? I'm not looking to start a thread of negativity here by the way (the sponsors up there ^ won't be too thrilled) - just looking for a more balanced view of this product.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Now you've gone and done it.... In order of age: 1978 Fender Precision 1979 MM StingRay 1982 Precision JV 1983 Aria SB 1983 MM Cutlass I 2000 Kubicki ExFactor I do own basses that aren't black too. Honest.

Sounds like a StingRay to me...
