1. I use Ernie Ball Slinkys on mine. They do have a tapered end to the string, but the the taper on the E string just about misses the head of the saddle on mine. Gauge is .45... Actually I have a question for the other Ex Factor owners on here: is yours a relatively quiet bass? I'm talking about maximum volume output compared to other basses. Even in active mode mine seems to have a lower output than my other basses for some reason...
2. Well, why not eh?
3. I've seen this subject come up in a thread or two in the past and was reminded of it earlier when I read this:
The other thing that makes me laugh is the guy from Muse swapping basses out eleventy-eight zillion times during a gig and using so many effects you couldn't tell which bass it was anyway.
So why exactly is Chris Worcestersauce using a different bass for every song during the Muse liveshow? Many naysayers would spout forth "He's just a big poseur, mocking us meagre peasants with his array of fine instruments!", but alas they are very much mistaken. Here is a guided tour of the man in question's backline rig by none other than his own personal bass tech and button pusher: So the secret is revealed at last! It is of course due to the eternal quest for TONE! You see, each of those 5 Jazz basses have different 'subtle tonal nuances'. This is the reason for switching from Fender > Status > Rickenbacker > Gibson Grabber etc., etc. Then of course these subtle nuances are hugely enhanced by running them through a myriad of effects such as Big Muffs, Animatos and octavers. So let's not have any more mockery of this poor misunderstood member of 'the greatest rock band in the world today' shall we? He has enough on his mind already - in fact so much that he requires the assistance of his tech to switch his effects on and off for him. God bless him, say I!
4. Like BigRedX I've been using Schaller straplocks on my basses for nearly 30 years, and have never had any problems whatsoever.
5. Who's the singer? Owen Wilson or Clarky?
6. After 20 odd years of playing gigs, I can't remember a single time when I've been on stage and not enjoyed myself. Sure, there have been some gigs with terrible sound, a long slog to the venue and back, a distinct lack of audience, embarrassing mishaps and what have you - but I just get a kick out of playing live.
7.
Unfortunately my reply is often followed by a stunned silence as the cost of doing it properly and keeping my business in profit tends to frighten people off.
This is the curse of the professional designer, as opposed to the generic 'bloke I know who said he'd sort out a website'... Sorts out the wheat from the chaff, though eh?
8. Westone Thunder I fretless: more dive than a Stuka and sounded abysmal.
9. You've let yourself go a bit since you changed your avatar...
10.
aaaahm, looking doubtful for me, unfortunately.
Likewise... Can someone do us 'ex-pats who live in the arse end of nowhere' a favour and take a shitload of piccies to post after the event please? Just to make us really jealous, obviously
11.
it sits tightly in your graps
Graps? What is/are graps?
12. Found the thread about flying with instruments for ya: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=41208
13. How would customs be able to PROVE that you have just bought this bass and not had it for years, anyway? Just walk on through. Confidently. If I were you, I'd be more worried about the bass making the trip safely - I reckon the airline will not allow it to go as hand luggage - from personal experience, airlines tend to let you board the plane with a bass in a gigbag, but if it's in a hard case it usually has to go in the luggage hold of the plane. There's a sticky/pinned thread on here about flying with instruments as I recall - have a read through that. You'd be much more gutted to arrive in London with a battered/destroyed/'disappeared' bass than having to pay £100 in tax, wouldn't you?
14.
Are Stingray necks swapable? Thinking about getting a fretless one for my 2EQ Stingray. Also, do they come up for sale that often?
As long as the neck bolt configuration is the same, then I would guess they are swappable. There seem to be a few StingRay/Sabre hybrids around - ie basses with the body of one and the neck of another model combined. You probably would have a hard time finding a second-hand fretless neck for sale though - but I have seen people selling StingRays with 'spare' fretless necks in the past, both on here and on eBay, but sellers usually want to sell the whole lot in one go and are less inclined to sell the extra neck on its own for some reason. How about a Status Graphite StingRay replacement neck? From what I've read peeps who have gone this route are usually more than happy with the result.
15.
It's like this Singer: hot chicks "can I have your number/a shag" Guitarist: musicians "love your slide playing mate" Drummer: slightly less hot chicks "the singer's not interested but you can shag me if you want" Bass: soundguy "love that rig, my mate Dave plays Mesa Boogie" Never varies C
A word of advice: only join bands where all the other members are uglier than you... Or foreign
16. What is vintage? Pre 1980? If so, then yes I used my '79 StingRay at 99% of the gigs I have played since I bought it, and regularly play the '78 P Bass too. A few more dings ain't gonna hurt them...
17. Nude bass playing is just so 90s, man
18. Like Mr BigRedX, I do too. Admittedly I don't have brilliant keyboard skillz - but seem to have a pretty good feel and can play some good melodies. Of course the massive advantage nowadays is that you don't need to spend money on buying synths - as long as you have a half decent laptop and a keyboard that you can plug into it via USB or FireWire. There are a huge amount of 'virtual' synths available for both Mac & PC: Moogs, Prophet 5, DX7alikes, Jupiter 8, ARP 2600, OSCar to name a few just off the top of my head. They all have great bass sounds amongst their presets so you can just fire 'em up, pick a sound you like, and off you go. Interestingly when I am composing music at home, I tend to lay down synth bass parts before recording bass guitar parts. Like BRX mentioned you definitely get a different feel from using the synths and it tends to stop me from creating 'the same old type' of basslines.
19. Was 'Papa was a rolling stone' a Jamerson one? That's pretty simple.
20.
I've also gone lightweight recently. I cut down to this
Gene says he's very happy with your old rig though...
21. The seller of the Aguilars has edited his ad to read: "attention - this price is for EACH cabinet" so not such a bargain after all. Curses....
22. Gents, For a while now I have been looking to replace my Ampeg SVT115 & SVT410 cabs for something smaller, lighter and generally more portable. My head is an Ampeg SVT3 Pro, and main weapon of choice - 2EQ StingRay 4. I've seen 2 sets of cabs on sale locally and am wondering if you guys reckon they are worth a punt Here are my 2 choices: A: 2 x Aguilar DB112s, practically new condition, price around £500 for the pair. B: 2 x TC Electronic RS210s, again around £500 for the pair. Any advice greatly appreciated. Ta!

She went to school with my sister and once asked me to teach her how to play bass...
