I'm a lover not a hater (of Rics), so wholeheartedly approve of your NB! I too have a 4003S, although mine has the toaster and horseshoe pickups, I think its fab.

One thing that has always bugged me about the Stingray 5 is the shape of the headstock - the position of the lower tuner seems wrong somehow - however the shape of the Sterling 5's headstock is ok and to me looks more like a MM 5er should look. Am I alone in this?

Did anyone get to the bottom of this issue? I too am using a Mac with Safari and can't see any vids. Advice..?

Fender Rumble 60 at a rehearsal studio..... really??
matski replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
IMHO - a 60 watt amp should be OK for rehearsals. It's not a gig, and shouldn't be done at gig volumes.
A few years ago, the band I was playing with was asked to perform at a quite prestigious gig which was to take place on an outdoor stage in the main square of a city in Poland. I asked if I needed to bring my own amp, but was repeatedly told it wasn't necessary as the back line would be provided. Anyways, we arrive and check the back line on stage and sure enough there is an Ampeg half stack so I'm thinking all is well. We were told our soundcheck would be a quick 5 minutes immediately before our set, so imagine my surprise when I take to the stage and find that the Ampeg rig has disappeared and has been replaced by a tiny Hartke 50w combo! Bollocks! Luckily I was just about able to hear my bass DI'ed through the monitors or I would have been in major trouble. -
I bought my Aria SB brand new in 1983, so thats 34 years ago now. I bought my JV P57 in 1984, so 33 years ago. I bought my Stingray in 1986, so 31 years ago. I bought my Cutlass in 1991, so 26 years ago. Then I had a bit of a hiatus on the bass acquisition front for quite a few years. Then I joined Basschat.....
I went to the one above the Bass Centre run by Tony Muschamp, loads of really useful music theory and practical advice went in one ear and out the other Just did the Saturday 10 week course and was taught by a slightly scary guy called Silas Maitland who played bass for Geno Washington, also by Si Mulvey a couple of times. Must have been late 80s or early 90s.
Heh heh! Likewise... I did the Saturday course too, can't remember much about it though. Probably around 1990... I do remember the bass teacher bloke had a creamy white Yamaha bass and a mullet - was that Tony Muschamp? I also remember that the drum teacher played for Geno Washington's band.
And... the Yamaha DX7?
And Simmons drumkits...
Yes, you can make sure the screwdriver to keep in the kit bag fits then too It still won't work though.
Don't worry about it too much, the batteries last for years -- as long as you remember to unplug your cable when you're not playing it.

I have a factory fretless Precision, mine is a 1978 model with a maple fret(less)board. It's pretty damn heavy, but mighty fine sound wise. I fitted half wound strings on it to avoid damage and it sounds epic.

So, what do you think brought you to the bass?
matski replied to Dazed's topic in General Discussion
Me and my mates wanted to start a band when we were 12 years old: one guy's older brother already had a drum kit, the other guy already had a guitar, so I volunteered to play bass. My dad bought me a Hondo Rickenfaker and a Park combo to start with. Gawd bless 'im! -
Aria SB Black&Gold I bass Fender JV Precision (defretted) Carlsbro 100W combo Boss Chorus and Flanger pedals, MXR Phaser pedal.

I've owned a StingRay for the past 30 years and have run it through various amps over that time: Trace Elliot GP12 combo with 4x10 speakers Ampeg SVT Classic with 8x10 cab Ampeg SVT200 with 8x10 cab Ampeg SVT3 with 4x10 and 1x15 cabs Genz Benz Streamliner 900 with Genz Benz NX212T cab The only amp setup that I didn't get on with was the Trace Elliot as I found it too sterile and clangy sounding, but the Genz Benz rig really seems to suit the StingRay (or vice versa).

How do I get this tone Chaps? The Cult Live At The Lyceum.
matski replied to Dandelion's topic in General Discussion
Look at the youtube vid, The Cult Live at the Lyceum. The Stingray tone. But with what? Chorus and some delay perhaps?
Pre-EB StingRay, brand new strings, Boss CE-2 chorus pedal and you're there! -
I see you own a G&L already - the StingRay is going to be fairly similar to that.

I once did an outdoor gig in January in Poland and it was about -10 C so pretty flipping freezing! Thermal undies were required! Luckily there was a dirty great big space heater/jet engine thing on the stage so I cunningly positioned myself in front of it. Tuning will be an issue, so make sure you have something you can use to check tuning in between songs. Hands-wise, I found I had cold hands to start with but they quickly warmed up, however towards the end of our hour long set they did start to get cold again. I didn't use any gloves as can't play so well with them on.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

At my last gig, I decided to use the same bass I played at my first ever gig way back in 1984. -
He did. But he sounded very similar (if not IMO slightly better) when he was using his Travis Bean TB2000.
Not to be too much of a pedant, but actually the (original) version of Quiet Life on Trevor's Playlist features the Travis Bean and not the Wal shown in the video. This clip was filmed later when the song was re-released and Mick Karn was just swapping to using Wal at that point.

Why does he want to play disagreeably damp, musty, chilly, clammy, moist, wet and unaired tunes though....?
IME all basses sound essentially the same in a given style of music once they have been tweaked to sit properly in the mix.
I disagree. A Fender Precision sounds different to a Musicman Stingray which sounds different to a Rickenbacker - this is the very reason why I own different types of bass and regularly record specific basslines with specific basses: for their individual sounds.
I'll tell you what it is. cannot believe that there is not somewhere in today's sounds for a classic Gibson. I just can't hear it. I can't find it, Everyone says its looks cool, or loved it in that day but are they now just history? Who uses a Gibson today? I know Brian Leiser from FLC uses a LP but its dark stuff very dub.
Actually Fast has swapped from the Gibson to a Marcus Miller Jazz bass now.

How about the Stratosphere in the States - have you tried them? They sell a few Fender fretless necks. Here's a link for you: https://stratosphereparts.com/search.php?search_query=fretless
