BEWARE !!! My first bad experience buying on BC. My bad for not checking feedback first. 'Samuel' responded to my wanted ad for a Trace cab cover. This is what he described as 'as new condition'. Covered in crap, a hole in the top and the corner glued so tightly where it has been ripped that it barely even fits the cab anymore. No response from my displeasure. Steer very clear

As shown in my recent thread in the Amps and Cabs section, my collection of 250SMX's in various guises. All essentially the same amp from the same era, but the top one has a fan and the others have heat sinks. Lovely
Mmmm naughty pictures like that should be in a Trace Elliot Porn thread... Divine
Good point. I think I shall sort that later 😎
There's plenty of SMX goodness there man!
There sure is. I'm just gutted that tonight's rehearsal was cancelled. I was really looking forward to cranking up the new head through my Trace cabs 😞. Never mind, roll on the weekend!
The best SMX I had was the 400, plenty of power, cool looks and 'that' sound.. It'll be interesting to see the differences in your pix - I too am a Trace anorak..
Here we go then, I hope this is enlightening for my fellow Tracephiles. I got the amp back following it's service yesterday and very lovely it sounds too! The pics show the 3 incarnations of effectively the same amp from the same generation. On the top is my latest acquisition, an AH250SMX with a fan instead of a heatsink. This is the only one that actually has '250 watts' printed on the rear cover. In the middle is the same head but with a heatsink and finally at the bottom is the 1215SMX combo, again with a heatsink. They all sound great, look great and should hopefully be good for a fair few years to come
I think some were fitted with fans later just before they went to green carpet / black panel guise although I couldn't be totally sure. I beleive they'll be the '300w' models as they're quoted as 280 rather than 250 on the rear panel..
Thanks for the info. I picked up an absolute bargain 250smx yesterday (not the one off eBay that sold yesterday, although that still wasn't a bad price) - I have issues resisting these amps 😍. It sounds great but I've taken it straight in for a service/once over so once I have it back, I'll post pictures of the 2 different types.

Hi all Here's one that's been puzzling me. I've had (and have) various SMX heads from the 90's. The 250 I have has a heat sink, yet I've seen many others that don't. These are all from the same era (i.e. single continuous line around the front plate), yet they're different. Was this an amendment that occurred part way through the life of that range, or were some fitted with fans or didn't require the heat sink? Cheers
I've had the AH250SMX from new in early 90s.. brilliant amps. Does the 350 have noticeably more volume or headroom than the 250? If so, that's one LOUD amp! :-)
To be honest, I've never had any of them passed 3 in any situation. They're all just crazy loud 😜

I am thinking of starting a Pink Floyd Tribute Band
Deedee replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
I was in a Floyd tribute which had Chris Evans ex-wife as lead vocalist! We used to rehearse just outside Lenny Henry's house - the one he shared with Miss French. We were called Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. I didn't bother taking my coat off.
Superb 😂 -

I think Water's lyrics are fantastic, both with Pink Floyd and his solo work. They're noted as being dark and thought provoking, but there is also humour which many people seem to over look. The same with Morrissey too I suppose.

Picked up a Zolkow 3 band preamp off this very forum and it sounds amazing! Kept the original stock pick up as that already sounded pretty good. The problem was that the original preamp didn't do a great deal (especially the treble - that really didn't do anything at all). The preamp came already connected to 4 pots, including 1 stacked. One of the other pots was used as a blend between 2 pickups in a former life, so our guitarist and tech maestro suggested using it as a split coil/humbucker blend. So I've finished up with volume, single coil/humbucker blend, stacked treble & bass, middle. It sounds great, loads of tone options and plenty of umph! I'd recommend the same to anybody else with an active Stingray copy looking for an upgrade.
