1. I've not, never even tried one to be honest. I'm reading up on the DiMarzio Model J DP123 pick ups at the mo. They sound like they may fit the bill.
2. I'm very interested in this thread as I'm currently playing in a band where we tune down for certain songs. To save faffing about detuning mid set, I swap basses. I use a MM stingray and (usually) a US MM SUB. However, I've recently acquired a MIM Jazz which plays great but, being passive is just not as loud as the MMs. So my question is, do I just turn my MM volume down to a level that matches my Jazz at full tilt, or are there any replacement Jazz pickups that will give it more umph. Cheers
3. Bought a lovely MIM Fender Jazz from David. I chose to collect in person today and the item is exactly as described - lovely 😊 Great, friendly guy. Buy with confidence. Many thanks David
4.
I love a happy ending Nice to see the old thing restored to its former glory, and even nicer to think it's going to get some use, too. Thanks for the donation, Dan - all worked out well.
I think the gratitude is all mine. The amp's sounding superb. Many thanks again.
5.
Great story, and a superb amp, too. Trace gear isn't as fashionable as it once was, but I've auditioned just about every high -end bass amp on the market at one time or another and Trace Elliot stuff of various vintages is still a match for any of them, and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. It's loud, clear and lets everybody hear the true sound of whatever bass you plug into it. I suppose I am a bit biased because the first really good amp I got was a Trace rig back in the 1980's when they were the amp every bass player aspired to , and I have used them pretty much ever since, but they have still never been bettered, in my opinion.
Totally agree. I'll never move away from Trace amps again. I'm playing through a lighter cab now, but as far as the amps are concerned, you can't beat them. I've read on BC and other sites about the 'marmite' TE sound. Well I for one love it and will continue to for many years to come! 😎
6. To maintain transparency and to give anybody who was following this thread an update on the poorly SMX head I was generously offered……… The head is a 1993 AH250 SMX GP12 and after collecting and testing it, I sent it to my local repairer with a very long list of ailments. The main issues were found to be due to a completely knackered power stage. The first attempts at repair didn’t prove too successful and the amp had to be returned to the shop. But now, after a few repair attempts and 2 lengthy rehearsals I can now confirm it's fixed. The repairs came to £71, plus I treated the rack case to a new carpet covering and a new set of corner protectors which totalled a further £30. There's still a slight buzz but nothing too major. The amp sounds great and is extremely loud even for Trace watts. It’s considerably louder than my AH300-7 and that’s LOUD. As agreed with Tredders, I've this evening made a £50 donation (via PayPal) to BassChat. Many thanks again to Tredders for his kind offer to enable me to save this amp from the great gig in the sky for a few more years! Cheers
7.
I have a US SUB and I love it to bits. It's strung with ernie ball extra slinkys and plays and sounds great. In fact, I found myself neglecting my MM stingray! Mine is Teal and had already had the dodgy original scratch plate replaced with a MM black one. I'd recommend these basses to anybody and I certainly wouldn't part with mine.
Correction: Super Slinkys not Extra :-/
8.
Probably 95% of a stingray for 30 to 40% of the dosh, all things being equal.
That pretty much sums it up. The lack of contours etc on the body have never given the slightest issue.

10.
I've got a GP12 SMX sitting in my music room. It works perfectly, but on occasion, after about 15 minutes it starts squealing (which unbelievably sounds even worse than my playing). Doesn't happen all the time, but it makes you quickly rush for the power switch when it does... I've just done a quick google, and it seems as though it's a fairly common solder problem on a smoothing cap, so easily sorted out if you can use a soldering iron (or a cheap fix by an amp tech). Exactly the same as the one just sold for £275: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222757-trace-elliot-gp12smx300-head/page__p__2354286__hl__trace%20elliot__fromsearch__1#entry2354286 Here's the deal - if you want to come and collect it, or arrange a courier (it's pretty heavy), you can have it FOC. Then, if you're happy with it, bung some money (maybe £50?) to the donations section of Bass Chat. Sound fair? (Just one condition - if it becomes surplus to requirements in the future, you donate it on to someone else). Let me know Mark.
😳 Wow. That sounds more than fair. That amp that sold was the one I just missed out on. You have an incoming pm
11.
If you're bored and after some Trace gear, why not spend the time now looking for a good Chiropractor - save you time later when you'll need one (that TE gear is heavy- why not buy a Genz Benz???)
I steer clear of the cabs now days, but my current TE AH300-7 paired with a Barefaced Super 12 sounds awesome without breaking my back. I'd just like to try a GP12 SMX version too.
12. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have a nosey on Facebook when I get home and keep an eye out for any gear from north of the border ;-)
13.
I'll be the first to admit that can get on someone's case when things are bad but I don't mean cock-ups. They happen to everyone. Good nights and bad nights. That's live music, but what I can't stand is a "that'll do" attitude when it won't do. Members obviously trying learn a number in the car because they haven't bothered since messing up at last rehearsal. I'm no Marcus Miller but I know what sounds bad and that if you're being paid, you have a duty to the public and to your band mates to execute it all to the best of your ability. I have no problem with playing for fun with mates and it sounding crap if having a laugh is the only intention. Take someone's money, and it all changes for me.
+1. Absolutely agree. If you're going to do it, do it as properly as you can
14.
It's not from a shop, but have you seen this? ... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222757-trace-elliot-gp12smx300-head/page__p__2354286__hl__trace%20elliot__fromsearch__1#entry2354286
Yeah. There are a couple on here that are actually sold, they just haven't told us they are :-/
15. Yeah, sorry I should have said I'm in there pretty often but they haven't got a head that fits the bill at moment. Unless I rip the amp out of a combo they've got in!
16. Hi all It's half term, I'm off with my daughter, I'm bored and I'm itching to get hold of a Trace GP12 SMX head. Do you guys know of any music shops that have a fair amount of used gear that may be worth a call/trip out to? I'm based in South Yorkshire but as I say, I'm bored so I don't mind a bit of travelling. Cheers
17. The 2 touch up colours I bought were sort of either side of the Teal I was after, so I've mixed the 2 together and it's pretty close. Still a pain to do though!!!! Yet another couple of coats to put on then rub down............
18.
Hi D, I'd be inclined to let the wax colour the chip and pop a bit of clearcoat or clear nail varnish over the top when you get the chance.
Yeah, I'll certainly do that. I've got some clear coat so I'll give a go tomorrow Many thanks
19. Now sorted thanks to a £1.50 packet of kids wax crayons from the supermarket. Not a perfect match, but you need to double take to notice there's any sign of damage 😉
20. Hi all Just bought a US Musicman SUB in teal which plays and sounds great. However, my fingers have been slightly burnt as it was off flea bay and there is a chip on it that was not shown or described in the original ad. I wouldn't ordinarily purchase without viewing but this was many, many miles away and the only Teal SUB on offer. I certainly won't make that mistake again 😡 It's a long shot but does anybody know of a touch up paint or pen that comes reasonably close to this Teal colour? Many thanks
21. It's a steal! Have a bump on me. Cracking work horse of an amp (with a cool chorus too) 😎
22. I'd love to give it a try bit I'm just too far away from you. 😞
23. Well, had my first rehearsal with the new cab and head last night. Just went with the stingray straight into the head with the preset firmly in. Great punchy sound, cutting through nice and clear whilst maintaining a rich, fat tone. Glowing comments from the rest of the band. Love it !!!!!!!!
