1.
The stripey spandex will be a bugger to source tho...
😂
 2. Bought this used BTB 675 from my local shop yesterday. Saw it, played it, loved it, bought it! Very pleased with it 😎. So now I have the Squier P and Ibanez BTB 5's plus my Stingray and Fender P 4's. I think that's me done now. Many thanks to Mark at Electro
 3. Further to some of the earlier suggestions, I just tried an Ibanez SR 505 and the string spacing didn't feel too bad. It's the first time in while that I've tried an SR as I usually give them a wide berth and stick to 'old school' models, but I must say I was very impressed with the build quality and general feel.
 4.
I'm happy switching between my 5 strings, and my one 6 string, but going back to 4 is out - I've changed how I play so much that I use the B an awful lot now, higher up the neck. I make mistakes on my old 4 string.
I think this is the crux of it. Do you 'relearn' to play what you already know on a 5 (with a view to sticking to it) or do you just use the B when required so as not to screw up your 4 string playing.
 5. Up for grabs is my MIJ Steve Harris signature Precision (2009 I believe). Quite a weighty beast with a nice chunky neck that you could swing from. Here's a link to the original spec: http://www.musicians...s#productDetail I've upgraded the pickup to a Fender Custom Shop '62 and it sounds fantastic (I no longer have the original SPB1). If you like zingy it'll need some new strings, if not then it's fitted with some Fender 7250ML's that are approximately 6 months old. One of the original tuners was a little stiff for my liking so I replaced them all with Wilkinson equivalents. I still have the originals which will obviously be included. The screw holes etc were all the same and I left the original ferrules in place so no harm done if you wanted to swap them back. The bass does have a few knocks on the body which have been touched up by the previous owner. The main one is between the bridge and the pickup which although quite a ding, is barely noticeable as the finish of the bass does tend to hide knocks very well. There's also a small ding on the face of the headstock and 4 tiny indentations at the fourth fret beneath the D and G strings where it looks like something has pressed against it at some point. These are minor marks but I've tried to mention everything. All in all it's a very honest bass that's been used, plays and sounds great and just needs a new home. I'll also supply a cheap and cheerful non-Fender hard case. EDIT - Possible trades - Hit me with what you've got amp wise, basses would need to be 5's. I can only say no 😉. I'm in South Yorkshire but as always, willing to meet up. I am willing to post in the UK only at the buyers expense. ## PLEASE NOTE - UK buyers only please ##
 6.
I have sold all my 4 string basses and replaced them with the closest possible 5 string version of each, 4 feels wrong to me now, would someone with a 4 string keep gigging a bass with a missing string?
With this in mind, I'm obviously very happy with the Squier/Fender P string spacing, but what about the Stingray 5? Am I correct in thinking that the string spacing on that is far narrower than the Stingray 4? If so, is the spacing on a US Sub 5 any wider?
 7. Thanks for your thoughts guys. I'm just starting a new project so it may well be the ideal time to give the 5 my undivided attention 🤔
 8. I've recently purchased a rather lovely Squier VM Precision 5 string and like many other members, I'm absolutely loving it. My question (well, more of a poll really) is, what do most players do once they get the 5 string bug? Do they opt to just play a 5 all the time, or do they switch between the two? The reason for my interest is that many years ago when I first had a 5, I really struggled initially to get used to that extra string. I stuck at it and all was well in the end but at that time the 5 was my only bass. If I'd have been switching between a 5 and a 4 I'm sure I'd have struggled further. I'm a little 'better equipped' shall we say now and feel that I should be able to switch without too much issue, but I'm interested to know other members experiences.
 9. Steve Harris was my hero and main influence when I first started playing, around '88 when Seventh Son came out. I spent hours listening to the back catalogue trying to learn the parts, Live After Death being a particularly rich source of challenges. Over the years I've seen Maiden many times (with various line up changes) and although I'm not such a big fan nowadays, SH is still a hero and somewhat overlooked when people discuss top players. Anybody whose ever tried playing his lines fully through a 5-6 minute song will testify. I was fortunate enough to meet the man himself backstage at Download 3 years ago when they were repeating the 'Maiden England' set that I'd first seen at the NEC in '88. Myself and an old mate stood waiting like nervous school kids unable to string two words together. Happy days!
 10.
These are really good basses for the money. I did a setup on one for a friend and was really impressed. GLWTS
It is lovely but just a little to narrow on the strings for me
 11. Well, the Squier VM 5 P arrived today and I'm a very happy bunny. Perfectly packaged and unmarked, I got to work changing the strings (I'd already bought a set of my favoured Fender 7250's), then lowered the bridge saddles and tweaked the intonation a little. It feels even better quality than I was expecting. Just has that 'lively' feel when played acoustically that resonates through the entire instrument. I've not had chance to crank it up through the amp yet but I'm extremely happy with it. The string spacing is bang on for me and the overall feel and look of the instrument is great. Highly recommended 😁
 12.
Wow just had a look at the squier on Thomann, thats a fine looking Bass! Good choice!
Yeah I was hoping it would've landed by now but, hey ho looks like it'll be Monday. I hope they play as well as they look

 14.
Be interested to hear how you find it when you get it. If you like it half as much as I love mine you won't be able to put it down.
I'm hoping the same. I must admit, I'm a better player now and have a far better understanding of 5 strings than when I last had one (about 15 years ago). At that time it was somewhere new to put my thumb 😂. I just might get used to it!
 15. Well as it's Christmas I've treated myself and ordered an Olympic White Squier VM Precision from Thomann. £250 !!! They can't make them for that surely???? Thanks for all the assistance guys, much appreciated.
 16.
String spacing is an issue in two areas - at the nut end where you fret the notes and then at the bridge end where you play. Either can vary quite a lot and I would imagine this to be the make or break for different players using different basses. Reading the OP I think he is talking about string spacing at the nut end (= width of nut) when making comparisons to the width of a 4 string Precision neck?
Good point. It is at both ends that I find it too narrow to be honest.
 17. Recently took this as a trade as I need a 5 string for a new project. However, the string spacing is narrower than I would ideally like so I'm moving it on. It's one of these: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Vintage-V965TSB-Active-5-Bass-Guitar-Flame-Top-Brown-Burst/2K9 The bass is in near mint condition and plays beautifully. Comes with a Spider hard case which again is in great condition. Sale only now thanks I'm in South Yorkshire but I do love a motorway services meet up 😁
 18.
Why not just string your 4 string BEAD?
I did consider this, but then I was wondering if the nut slot for the E/B would need altering so in the end thought bugger it, buy a fiver
