Thanks for the feedback guys. The Sire isn't really my thing unfortunately as it does look rather nice. Squier VM does look like a good option - one pickup basses are my usual faves. Changing the bridge/nut would be a little OTT at this price bracket and the Vintage has a rather large bridge plate that would no doubt look a mess if replaced. There are some good other model options there too. I did once have a BTB 4 and that was lovely. Decisions, decisions 🤔

Hi all My new band/project is going to require me dabbling with a 5 string for a couple of songs again after many years. I've recently taken a Vintage V96 5 in a trade and lovely though it is, the string spacing feels a little tight for me. Could anyone recommend a 'budget' 5 that has a wider string spacing, a little nearer to the 4 strings that I'm used to I.e. Precisions and Stingrays?

Just bought a rather lovely GK Fusion from Lloyd. He very kindly met me halfway in a classic service station handover and we had a good old natter about all things bass. A great item, exactly as described and a thoroughly nice chap to boot. Trade with confidence! Many thanks again 😀

I picked some of these up from Screwfix and they're great. Smooth running, rubber and they don't rattle my combo to pieces. I think you can get larger sizes too. http://www.screwfix.com/p/rubber-tyres-swivel-50mm-4-pack/86718

I'm selling one of my early to mid-nineties Trace Elliot AH250 SMX heads. My main gigging amp is one of these which was resurrected from the brink of death (with the help of the good people of BC) a couple of years back. This head was bought as a back up to that one but has effectively been an unused spare ever since. These are great amps, built to last and very flexible. All the best features of the larger SMX heads but in a smaller, less weighty package. This particular version has a fan inside as opposed to the heatsink at the back.

250 watts @ 4 ohms (very loud old skool Trace watts)
Passive/Active input switch
Input Blend control - solid state or valve preamp
12 band graphic eq
Pre-shapes 1 & 2
Graphic and Pre-shapes can be mixed
Dual band Low & High Compression
EQ Balance control - effectively enabling you to 'tilt' the eq to suit the room
D.I.
Standby/mute
2 no 1/4" speaker outs (2 x 8 ohms or 1 x 4 ohms minimum)
Footswitch socket
Tuner Out
Effects Send/Return - switchable High Pass or Full Range
Weight - 14kg
The head is in great condition and has performed faultlessly when I have given it a run out (the last time at a couple of gigs 3 weeks ago). Ideally looking for a sale Possible trades - 'Budget' 5 string (Squier P, Dimension etc, etc) but nothing with too narrow a string spacing. Collection preferred from South Yorkshire but as always I'll be willing to meet up (and probably willing to post this one too - they are built like tanks). [s]Photographs to follow[/s] EDIT: This was checked over/serviced by Electro Music in Doncaster last year and given a clean bill of health

Anybody want to go shares in some TE covers?
Deedee replied to TheGreek's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Doesn't quite detail what they will cover though, amps cabs, etc. Do you know what dimensions they'll fit?
Yeah, I may have been interested had there been a breakdown of the models. However, I'd hate to think where he got them from as he clearly doesn't know what he's got. I think walking away is the best advice. -

Trace Elliot 1215 Series 6 200w Combo Amp - Sold Pending.
Deedee replied to bagsieblue's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Picked one of these up myself recently and used it at rehearsal for the first time last night. Great tight sound from the 15" speaker and typically for an old Trace, bags and bags of power to spare. You'd have to be playing a pretty huge room without a pa for this not to provide ample volume. I usually play through a Trace 250 SMX head into a Barefaced Super 12, but this really did sound magnificent. Highly recommended 😎 -
Yes it's definitely brochures /catalogues I'm after. I'm ok for manuals etc. I know, I know, call it nostalgia but I'm a bit of a sad sack for old brochures of Trace amps that I own/have owned 😉
-
Does anybody have a link to any old Trace Series 6 brochures/catalogues? I have a couple from the era when the SMX range was first introduced, but I'm looking to go back that bit further.
I sense a theme developing here. My first proper amp in 1991ish was a Peavey TNT 115 (not the Black Widow version though - what was the slightly lesser cousin called?) That got traded up for a Trace Elliot 7215 in the mid-90s, which I've still got. For size and weight reasons, the Trace might be on the way out soon though. Twenty years(!) on though, and I have no idea what I'm looking for.
Another one here who had a couple of 'non black widow' 150 TNTs back in the day. First was a wedge shaped followed by a standard combo. Both purchased used from Carlsboro in Nottingham (sad sigh for a great but long gone Shop). If I recall the lesser speaker was known as the Sheffield. A bit harsh on Sheffield I thought.
It's better just to practise more and maybe strike out out in a new direction. ... but a shiny new bass is more fun. Who am I trying to kid?
If i spent as much time practicing as I did looking at/researching/travelling up and down the country collecting new gear I'd be a fantastic player 😂
-
It's the availability of gear too. In the dim and distant past I'd have to trave to my local music shops or trawl the free ads and I'd buy what I found if I wanted it. Now with one click I can find anything I want.
Very good point 🤔
Norman Watt-Roy. If I could choose to be able to play like anyone it would be him.
+1 to this. Saw him with Wilko in Sheffield a couple of weeks back. Absolutely blown away.
I`ve sold some stuff I really should have kept hold of, hopefully I`ve learned my lesson now. It`s just that I hear other stuff and really like the sound of it, and then realise that that sound was great in whatever band it was being used in etc, but my sound suits my band the best and I already have the exact right gear for what I need. I`m lucky in some ways that I`ve found the perfect basses for me, the post 2012 US Standard Fender Precisions. I`m so happy with them that I`ve no intention of looking at other basses, it`s amps/cabs that I keep buying, moving old stuff on, then selling the new gear to buy the old stuff again. Just been through it all for the second time, selling my Aguilar Tonehammers, only to then have to buy them again. Hopefully I`ll learn from this that as much as I want a big looking stack, I`m too knacked to be carrying one - even of a 13lb racked amp and Barefaced lightweight 410 & 210 - so it has to be a small Class D amp and a single 2x12 (Barefaced of course) cab. Basically I need to adopt a bit of common sense in both the wallet, the ears, and the back.
I'm finally coming to the same conclusion. I love to try new basses and amps but I like what I like I.e. what I already have. As I think you mentioned in another thread Lozz, I'm tempted to buy new amps but all I'd do is spend time trying to make them sound like my Trace SMX's. I'm at the age now where I have a sound in my head that I know and love (rightly or wrongly perhaps to other people) and anything different to that sound is just wrong. The problem is I really do like buying and selling and meeting great people. In conclusion, I think boredom is a big part of it 😧
