All very interesting and useful comments. We do our own sound and are well know for being loud. It is hard to get a mosh pit going at low volume. I do like the idea of dropping the on stage volume and using the subs to reduce everything on stage and make things just that bit easier to hear. I suppose very little apart from the bass drum goes through the subs so they would be working harder but the cross over should leave the bass in the subs only.

Hi Gang I have a 1k rig that is loud enough for any pub gig without needing the PA. However, after yesterdays talk about which included separation I was wondering should I run through the PA (2 x 15" mackie subs + 2 x 15 tops) to thicken the sound or stay out of the PA to allow everything else to work easier? Perhaps even a "just in the mix level" Just wondering what your thoughts area. Ta Mike

Mini Bass Bash in West Sussex - Sunday 31 August 2014

Thanks to one and all for a great day. Nice to meet so many great people and players. Quite interestingly watching Jake deconstruct a song made me realise I do the same thing but deconstruct them into other songs that are in the appropriate key. It makes sense to me anyway -
I'm with JTUK as why I do it but would add fun. Norris, I think you prove my point. You think your band is worth an amount, you charge it and get it, hence you are worth it. BP, if someone was willing to permanantly do my job, to my standard, skills, qualification etc. my empoyer would be mad not to sack me and employ them. However, they should question what is their motivation. . If I have chosen to try and make my living as a profession where there are thousands willing to do the job for free I would make sure I had a superior product that people were willing to pay for. It may sound harsh but if people aren't willing to pay you for it then reason stands it isn't worth paying for (at that precise time), I suppose sometimes the payment could be in exposure and opportunity, which is difficult to put a price on. Oh wait I have just found a tag and it is £9.99 Just my rantings

IMHO As it is a free market economy and as part of the contract you agree you may or may not choose to play for free then you are paid what you think you are worth for that event. If you think you are worth £1,000 go for it it, if you get it, your worth it. If you don't your not (for that event). Many bands play for free or pay to play as a potential investment for their future. We get paid ok but we have a good product and a dedicated fan base that we have worked on. There has to be room for all as without an illegal cartel there is no realistic other option.

Maplins sell smoke machine juice in both thick and thin. Varies from venue to venue and depends what you are looking for.

We don't have many quiet gigs but the performance is appropriate to the number and often more fun as the preassure is off. We deffinately have more of a giggle and silly stuff starts to happen.

Get a facebook page and stick some decent demos on you tube. Go into pubs with these ready to play and also available on CD. Try and make it look half decent. Also recommendations from fellow musos who play the particular venue can go a long way. Bluffing is also acceptable.

Mini Bass Bash in West Sussex - Sunday 31 August 2014

Hi Nik I should be there with a GK2001RB, Barefaced compact Mk1, Barefaced Super twin and a Markbass Jeff Berin I might try and flog. With a Korn K5 signature bass. Ta Mike -
Won't somebody think of the batteries!!!!! Put new batteries in everything that has batteries in it. Take a spare of everything reasonable.Trust the stage manager. Don't worry about the front of house sound, you can not do anything about it. Think if you need to relieve yourself at least 10mins before you go on. Keep an eye on the drummer, they always dissapear and it is the rhythm sections job to find him. During performance if you forget what note comes next don't think about it and it will come naturally. Never look around if someone drops a note / beat. Tune up every chance you get as the sun can be a difficult nemesis.Get a group photo of the band after the performance if you can takes seconds lasts a lifetime. Good luck

Carole Kaye Teaches Gene Simmons Of KISS !!

Would it be wrong to say "depnds on the time of the month", if so then I didn't say it -
So, first gig with new guitarist and new head. Was fine in rehearsal but Head keeps cutting out through gig on lots of low notes. I am happy with all the settings on the front. Ie I am using a five string so button is set correctly, but I am not sure about the bits on the back. I was running a 2x12 barefaced of the right hand speakon. This amp has some many confiugurations and comes with so many warnings in the manual that I am a bit lost. I want to run either a 2x12 Barefaced with the option of adding a 1x15 barefaced when I need extra oomph. Do I need it in bridged mode, and should I only use the 1/4" jacks at the back rather than the speakons?? I am confused. Many thanks in advance. Mike

Have a pooh before you go out even if you don't need to. I have been caught out in venues with toilets so disgusting the flies were warning not to go in there!!!!
-
Make sure your lead is tucked around your strap so you don't "tread it out".
-
Have a wee before you go on. If you are taking a drink on stage get it 5-10 mins before you go on. The drummer will dissapear just before you go on. This is anavoidable. Don't panic, just go find him. Tune up before you go on stage. Tune up again once you get on stage. If you go out of tune just play a bit quieter and bend the notes to something that doesn't clash. Compliment the band coming off regardless of how good they may have been. If you forget the notes just play a bit quieter and bend the notes to something that doesn't clash. Know where your spares are, as bass player you will be expected to have spares for everyone. Face and pretend to chat to the drummer. Rock gods do this!!! Good luck and have fun!!!
-
You could try contacting them and let them know they gave you a fake one and that they might need to check the incoming notes and you are happy to take it into them to review if their checking regime is working with a fake note. They might make the effort to replace, or alternatively, you have both been fooled ask them if they will go halves so you are equally out of pocket. Not worth losing a good venue over and going in guns ablazing could easily escalate to that.

I have cut all my strings at the 7th fret as they just weren't getting used!!!
