Let's be honest about it,everyone has had negative comments said about them at some point-it doesn't matter who you are(there are plenty of discussions on here in that vein). However,I think you were wrong to blank the guy. I doesn't matter what he said about you to someone else,to him you came across as a prick by ignoring him when he spoke to you.You don't have to be confrontational or anything, just a quick 'Alright mate' would have been enough. He may not have liked your tone, but he might be a nice enough guy who just wanted to chat with you-by blanking him you come across as though you are arrogant and with a bad attitude. I'll always speak to guys and am friendly, even if I don't particularly like them-you never know, you may get some gigs out if it.
Oh sorry, I see how I came across as a "prick" now, its just, I dont remember seeing you there at the time.
Yes, getting what he said 2nd hand doesn't warrant how you treated this guy imo. You should have checked it out with him directly and then reacted. Pedro
Probably right P, but I just didnt. what can I say? Im only human and certainly no saint!! does no one here ever just get CROSS!! eh? or if they do just cant admit to it? sometimes when youre alone at night with your own thoughts dont you ever just think..... "if only I could go back to that moment I'd............. (insert here)" Oh come on, you know you have!
Opinions are like arseholes everyone has one. Never worry 'bout them .
I know that ,you know that, the world knows that but... "if you prick us, do we not bleed?" maybe just ignore the pricks I suppose
Can't see why you're still pissed off about it TBH. If it was someone worthy of musical respect I might understand you being concerned, but you reckon he's a know nothing so it's like being called an ugly bugger by a child. So stop wasting your energy with such trifles. I also can't dig that you blanked him. Are you quick to anger? I think Joe Toasted has an excellent point. Just my thrupence worth.
Didn't happen to you though did it? Dig(?) But, point taken and have 2p change some times, on earth, we call this "emotion" or even "professional pride" as misguided or illogical,Captain, as it can be, some times it happens I Guess. allow for typed word not conveying the full intent though Mr S. who said the drummer was a friend? why should he defend me? (BTW) And....Quick to anger? of course not You toss#er!!! (REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY J for Joke)
It is difficult when you are in this situation.. If I am watching and asked... I would just reply that it is fine...or ask what they are lookng for and go from there. Nothing to be gained from trashing the guy tho...so if you can't say anything nice or plesant, best say not much at all.... If I am playing...then I don't talk about subjective subjects like sound.. if I am happy, that is pretty much it. I'd probably not have bothered with him either... I wouldn't have ignored him completely, just a curt 'acknowledgemnt' and move away quickly.
Thats what I did really, look 'em in the eyes but no response, it can be more satisfying than words if you see what I mean?! but the fact Im still "on one about it"....means I dunno.... BTW No, Martin, it wasnt Biffo, he made me laugh! and was sacked so I could come back to that particular turn,If you rember,so I got my own back there, eh? (he slagged me off as well.....Im not making myself look too good here am I? ) maybe I can join the "marmite" club of the bass playing world...I think the company is good there though. sorry for the personal message ...Its MY thread!! W

OH! Stylon!! less of the "old" "Git" I can handle.....but... W
I'd question the motives of your "friend" who told you all this.
He wasnt a friend, he was the Drummer!! incapable of lying/subderfuge/dishonesty he'd have a nose bleed bless him!!

Maplins?maybe? I think its JHS that distribute marshall gear btw ask nicely you could get one free!! I know flattery has worked with Trace Elliot (geezers!!)
I agree.... or a swift nut to the nose and standing on his neck for 5 mins may have the desired effect.
Now THATS got me to thinking...!!!!
-
Naa Ive heard him play, he knows knoball!! take your point though. he was noticably embarresed by being "blanked" never happened to him before I dont think. He does think hes "all that" wish like you say, Id made him "squrim!!" though

The fact Im on half term holiday, means I've been here a lot over the past few days. In my curmudgeonly old way, its got me thinking about lots of Bass related topics/stories. For me, one that keeps coming back to me is one, that even with hindsight/time still irritates me, when I mentally recount it. Its about being "slagged off" by another musician. that I can cope with (really, I can,Honestly, we all get that from time to time!!) but.....Well..let me share... I was playing at WMC somewhere (bad start I suppose!) and the drummer had invited an aquaintance (Bassplayer) down to watch. he sat and chatted with said drummer through our break and spent the whole time slagging of my "tone" & kit (according to the drummer) and how his was so "much better" Now "tone" is fairly subjective anyway. but what really piss#s me off, is the fact that having been told of this guys fairly vitrolic tirade, (and his "tone" & kit & much superior knowledge to mine) he was quite "put out"/offended that when meeting him, at the bar I completley blanked him!! ( not rude, you understand, just blanked, you know; Him: "allright mate?" Me:(reponse) nada, nowt, nothing. BTW) like I should be greatful for his "advice" ! two faced old womans "bits" say it to my face and dont EVER call me mate!! was the thing. is it just me?...probably is, it was years ago but still makes me cross to this day that this guy didnt get why ANYONE could ignore him depite his own dualfaced rudeness. the very zenith of arrogance! Rant over, but KWIM? (feeling better now!)....let it go....and.....relax..... W

Id agree with the fact that an Ah300/500 with 4x10 & 1x15, prehaps the "classic" Trace Elliot rig, is WAY too surplus to requirements for a lot of gigs. Id say it was designed for the very "pro" curcuit,( think.. carling academey or even stadium size shows) but now its more affordable .....why not? you can turn it down a bit! from my point of view,I still use that type of thing on most gigs and the "trouser flap" thing of bass moving air,as well as lots of controll at your finger tips is something I (for one) enjoy. Dans advice about combining more modern cabs with a Trace head is spot on I'd say though. depends on your budget all in all.
How old is "old"? I have a 14-year old SMX head & 3 cabs (1203h, 1152 and 1084h) No issues at all from the cabs. The head glitched once, and I had it serviced and fully tested by an ex-Trace employee. He knew what was up before he opened it! The boards inside are connected by wires with push-fit spade terminals. Over time, they work loose. As a fix, he soldered all mine in place, cleaned the whole unit out, cleaned an re-lubed the graphic eq, replaced all the illumination, everything. That's all I've had in 14 years. Neither the amps nor the cabs are state-of-the-art by today's standards. They're perfectly giggable, but heavy! I'd avoid the 4x10 combos- They're MEGA heavy and bulky and top heavy and you can't lock your arms to carry them and the cabinet volume is less than the standard 1048 to keep the weight down, so you lose a bit of bottom end.
for my future reference could you tell me who fixed your amp Lfalex? good contacts for that sort of thing is good to have! PM if there is a confidentiallity issue ATB W

The last engineer who repaired my amp commented how much it was "built like a tank" and no sell out on parts, all good stuff, as it were. It was in for a dry joint which is/can be a hard thing to diagnose on the whole, but as the amp was trouble free for 25(+) years,so its got good form I suppose nothing is "future proof" but with Trace Elliot gear I'd guess your'e on safe ground, but it IS a guess with second hand stuff (though mine was second hand 20 years ago) whatever you choose make sure you can "push it" quite hard when testing, harder than you think you'd really need. then, all OK? happy days! cabs are easier, your ears will tell you if theres a problem there. replacement drivers are quite cheap in the scheme of things. if you buy anything from the bass chat forum thats got a bit of an extra "gentlemans garantee" Ive found (especially from regular posters ) hope thats of some help W

I sold all my expensive kit and ended up with this!

I'm Really with OTPJ on this. one gig and strings are virtually "dead" to me .....boil and re-string lots here it may be an "era" thing (or just good taste)

At the risk of "hijacking" this thread I note that one BCer whos name temporarily escapes me used to own "the" level42 JD bass from the wembly concert from the 80s....and then SOLD it!! well hello!!!! for me that would have been a keeper/bury me with it ...Im a bit of a fan you see!! and a frenchman has it now well done to RT though, what a benevolent thing to do!
Which red one? They're both red I suppose you mean the 'Ray: got it a few years back from a guy called Nick from Yorkshire. It came in a battered old tweed case apparently previously owned by a Jeff Duncan, guitarist with many successful metal groups.
I got the ('ray.. soz) off a guy down my street, sold it back to him and he moved to to yorkshire later on so....most likley is the same one! (good one eh?) or at least could be. as I say glad it got a good home. did a lot of work with that one so its well travelled over Europe ATB Edit come to think of it the "guy down our street" was/is called Nick sebleski so....yeah almost sure now
WOW!!! Darth "Bongo" Vader!!! LOL Here are some piccies of what turned out to be rarer than rocking-horse poo... a VERY early Sterling!!! Production started in 1993 and mine is a '94. Both luvvly!! Enjoy!!
where did you get that red one from? I think its one I owned many many years ago. nice too see it found a good new owner, its like bumping into an old friend ATB
Has anyone ever thought about modifying a flight case to actually be a speaker cabinet? my trace cab has a flight case thats built like an absolute tank, this got me thinking about possibilities of getting a flight case about the size i want, fitting speakers and approximating the port sizes etc to get some decent sound. flight cases that ive dealed with where made out of good quality ply, (obviously) very hard wearing and also where lined with foam, which i'm sure would work well as a cab. i figure i'd only have to add all of the needed bits and pieces to fit the speakers, do wiring, add the connections on the back and probably change/modify the clasps to stop them rattling from the bass. am i missing something here? i realise that you'd never get perfect freq response or tuning that you'd get from a high end cab, but for us not too picky non- audiophile skint bassists it could work alright.
I seem to remember Dynacord got ther first with this, a cab/combo built in a flight case with a removable/lockable front.
