Depends how you approach it.. I think you need to be hearing what you can do with a low note... I have a few little trade mark things I do that involve low notes and I'll adapt that into a song. I never bother ripping off bass-lines note for note so I have space and license to do what I want to the track. I try and get the essense and then go from there... this is the freedom that I have and want... If you concentrate more on getting the line from the record or track, and you stay in the key of the track..and most are played on 4's then, no, you don't need a 5. I wouldn't change for any reason that it was making sense to me to do so. I changed because we were recording tracks that shouted out 5... and then I got fed up with drop tuning... In the studio that was ok---ish..but a real head-f*** live...playing and tuning it betwen numbers in double quick time etc etc ... Case in point.. "I wish" from the D. Easy to keep that riff just in the one register as per the track... but if you play around with it through 2 octaves..and one of those picking up the line from the low B...???? You either hear this or want to do it... there aren't many references of it to copy.. or you don't. Not saying either is right or wrong... but going 5 for me was a MAJOR hassle so to go that way needs a driving reason. Once I got comfortable on the 5 ..and it took 18 months or so..I sold all my 4's... Now, I would never go back... I don't think you have a real reason to do it...but then some people say they consider swapping over easy and not an issue. Maybe it will that way for you... I would drop tune the E a tone or so and see how that works... at least you'll hear the way the lower note works in some songs even if you have to contend with fretting over a fifth... And if you get a good B string... not a given, IME.. it is great to have that huge defined low note. A low D or C can have so much impact in a chorus or bridge..
now you see...... he's thought it out!!

the fact that I've never got on with a fiver is irrelevant ....crap flappy string near your thumb... but as some forum members swear by them (ask Sarah By the same name!!) for instance, its only an opinion, but a hipshot "d" tuner and a octaver does the same job and gives an impression of that low B or general. or low(er)end stuff. dont see the point of high string tuning ( but I'm not bright enough to be a propper jazzer!!!) so I'd stick with a 4 as I say no more than an opinion...... I do think in the "heat of the night" fivers get in the way,.. but by the same token Ive seen some damn fine 5 players over the years.....bloody hell I'm no help (again) am I?

Im getting a nose bleed reading this, never mind trying to play it!!
I'm totally knackered all the time - I've just done 7 gigs in 10 days Sometimes I feel like packing up but then I think of what all the other 55 year olds are doing on Saturday night and it reminds me that I'm not ready to join the pipe and slippers mob. Keep going mate - something will come along to inspire you.
yup! he's said it better than I did and without the typeos too!! Hang on in there Mike! you know it makes sense!!! As a for instance,Ive allready asked Niceguyhomer if I can dep for his band!!!!!.so you know the playing "bug" dosen't go away, I'm afraid. a lot of players (self included) feel like jacking it all in now and then, but allways change their minds ATB Witterth

I Really dont know. but I can tell you that the production company asked me (via a music shop)if they could hire my status2000 for a shoot, and having seen the film, still dont know why!!or what they wanted it for......oh.... they also wanted it for "24 hour party people" god knows???? I said no BTW. I'm mean like that!! -
Eh up Linus!!! Ive got 5 years on you and recently picked up a gig with a covers band, but I really know what you mean......the cant be arsedness........ I have found, however, there is a certain amount of a warm glow driving home at "daft o'clock" on fri/sat Am (gig gone well or otherwise) and I know you most likley know what I mean, there..... been...there..done it e.c.t I'd say, Stick with it for now.....youll proably regret it if you dont. the "fleas" was a big loss cos all in all,cos they were a damn fine turn, but at the end of it you're a damn fine player yourself! and you dont need passengers!! hope you dont get too cynical about the whole thing.......find a covers band and have a laugh!!! loads about (with that nice 'ray in tow) ATB Witterth Adam Clayton? an arse deppiing for him?youre too good for that!!
Alex James is definitely under-rated. Girls and Boys is a great line to play. Just read his autobiography which is pretty good.
Alex james? Naa,he's certainly not underrated....... but he is good at cheese ..... bass Playing? errr.....cant agree with you there old chum!! But read his book too & and liked him for it, anyone fancy a Guy Pratt style passit on?with Alex book? lots of substance abuse stories and the like, but a happy end...PM if you'd like & I'll dig it out W

Best thing to clean a maple Stingray neck
witterth replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi I asked the self same Q a month or two back and, the wisdom of BC was to use, as you say, Murphys. its basically furniture polish. (I got some in B&Q) didnt make much difference truth to tell. untreated necks get "that" appearance you're no doubt looking to get rid of. Forum member, out to play jazz, ( for he knows many things, grasshopper )says it would most likely be best to get the neck varnished. So I'm gonna do that as soon as I can find a luither I trust!!! (otpj does know his stuff BTW) no reply from Ged Green in Manchester. not much help I know, but it seems were stuck with the string stains!! ATB W -
I still have a BIG trace rig and have even got rid of bits of it here...and there.... But the feeling of a BIG rig behined you is like nowt else and when youve tried it, you never want to go back......(despite some times wanting to KWIM?) speaking of backs, that Is the down side but yeah .....give it a go, you'll enjoy the playing and hate the lifting, but ,as (Conan?) says dont be "what if?"!!!! send us some pics from a gig! DO IT! ATB W

Anything by "Nickelback" I simply will NOT do it. I'd resign first, with some dignity intact, (and I ve played some awful stuff over the years!!) I do have, at least, ONE line in the sand which I will not step over, however. Nickelback? ......Gahh......
Many thanks for your kind comments John - hope you're enjoying the CDs. The band's been described - amongst other things as "Pink Floyd meets Fairport Convention" - whatever pigeon hole people want to put us in, I've really landed on my feet with this band. TBH I wasn't really into folk/rock before I joined them but now I'm really into it and it's a joy to play with musicians of this calibre - dunno WTF I'm doing there but they seem to like what I do. BTW - the violinist is Richard Curran, he's an amazing musician and he's played for some big names. He's also done work for the BBC and played at Wembley / V Festival etc. He's a nice bloke too - if I was that good, I'd be a right tw*t
Put in some extra shifts at work this week so just catching up!! loving the cds NGH, really liking it....bass playing gig thats really up my street.I'm jealous in all honesty!! hope to come and see you live soon. keep letting us all know when and where, as my saturdays are taken up with a bit of playing again ( at last!!) but would hate to miss and would love to come down to see it for real top turn witterth Ps did you ask about those players I mentioned in pm BTW?
Way I see it, it's no worse than having an eastenders addiction! Bassists are generally nice people with good attitudes I find. I always get on with other bassists. Or maybe that's just basschat making me think I do I come here for the pictures
You have the funniest avatar on the forum!!
Okay, it's pretty much a 25th anniversary bass, but the version that is here to stay. I can't say that I don't want one. I really really do.
EEEEWWWWWHHHHH!!!!! nasty bass... and not in the Alexander O'neil sense "nasty"
why not learn it your own way? I've never bothered to listen to it to learn it note by note and have been playing it regularly in bands for the past 15 years.
"learn it yor own way"....pphhwww bit of an excuse really, learn it properly from the record...the "my version" is usually a bit crap (EVEN when its Bill Wyman and the 4 notes requried)can you belive that? getting a gig means you have to do this type of irksome thing -
A Vantage? possibly? still means a Kay Though.
