Ive followed our own niceguyhomer on his band (the silverdogs) after originally following his "audition" thread and then him getting the gig.... well.. I followed the myspace link and listened to the material there and have to say, I for one have become a Fan and would reccomend a few more BCers give it a listen. Its essentially "folky" type of music but with the twist of a sh*t hot drummer, a fiddle player who is inventive and avoids the (obvious jigs/reels route) to be exciting,an equally inventive/ talented piano player who can really play keyboards, if you understand the distinction(?) a lady singer who is REALLY Superb (not to mention a guy who can hack vox too) a guitar player who reminds me (at least) of both Alan(s) Holdsworth&(late lamented) Murphy....enough said. last and most definetley not least our own homer who plays some lovely, perfectly stated, thought out, tight, and intelligent bass...lovely sound to boot ,all Great musicians. and slick/polished recording I know this all sounds a bit "gushing" or, like something from a cheap press release, but its really a genuine opinion from me (nowt to do with the band) who is basically a bit of a fan....(odd to be a fan of anything other than sanatogen & coronation street at my age!!) I know "folk" isnt the cup of tea for all BCers and I like ALL sorts of stuff myself, but I dont think any one, what ever you're into, can deny this is well done and gets in my book the ultimate endorsement that can be applied to ANY sort of playing that good - "Pro" as I say Im a "fan"... but more power to 'em Hope you dont mind my "public" comments Homer ATB W
Someone mention Mr.Wooten? Seems I'm here just in time For the record, the ideal slap tone is achieved via using nice clean zingy strings & eq-ing lots of highs and lows with flat mid frequencies. So any comment about Marcus Miller's slap tone having no mids is totally correct. Mids are not welcome in slap-land! You need the flat middle for that scooped sound. Just waiting for the same old boring arguments about "barrages of machine gun fire" & "unmusical" to surface now. I do wish someone would come up with something original, I really do.
Dont know sir............anyway....Sir....... HE started it with all that stuff about the 70's!!! .... and slagged of my mum (The 80s')!!!! so I said.........no Sir ...sorry.....no.. I mean no, SIR!! ...sorry sir ........can I go back to Mr Kings' Class now Sir?......were doing fractions and I don't want to miss stuff about 1/16ths.....sorry Sir... no Sir... wont be even mention Mr Wooten again sir.... Thank You sir

I thought a "power conditioner" was sommat my lass used on her hair...."cos shes worth it " every one should have a "cut out" switch on electrical gear, amp/straigtners/dryer/PA whatever (even hair dressers,is that what you mean?)
Weak low end, constant crash cymbal highs, and no mids. Why did you describe that as "Full range"? And it can't be the definitive slap tone unless it's been used on records that people have heard. I hate listening to his bass, he sounds nearly as bad as John Entwistle to me. That's "rich John Entwistle" - he sounded good until he could afford to ruin his sound in extreme ways.
Missed that one... This IS funny!!!! go on..... say sommat about Wooten, we'll be here all night!! HA HA!!!
Oh come on there's way too much compression on the bass, his pops sound like disposable barbeque trays landing on lino.
AAhhh go on admit it ......you've been drinking aintya? ha ha ha ha!!!! (barbeque trays on lino?theme fom duck tales? pork pie hat) all very funny stuff and especially all the "Bites" you're getting. ever go fishing? you're a natural! aannd nope!.... "hit me baby one more time" was the biggest selling single (they still had 'em then) of................... 1999!!!!!! do your research "lamarr would have done" J=joke
Well, more to the point there were other more palatable slap sounds - Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Norwood Fisher, etc. Less of the ear-splitting treble content that Marcus likes to injure his listeners with.
( vic and bob style, handbag to chin ) OOOOOHHHHHH!!!!
I'd wager more of an 80's type thing, ala Seinfeld.
but that's not a bass. no disrespect, but listen again, Sienfeld "bass"is a synth...well by that I mean a sample played on keyboard. Im not a betting man but on this occasion £10er says..... ATB W
Came across some old promo stills towards the end of last year. I'm the one on the left looking a little vacant. This was mid 80's German new wave period. You should have seen the one Polydor chose from the same shoot for the first single and album inner sleeve... embarrasing is not the word. But we were a good live band.
Allthough you cant, tell I'm wearing one of those "piano" ties with absolutley no sense of Irony either.....oohh ....god..... (R of avatar)...we had no shame in the (early 80s) Ooooohhhh......god......I had that shirt youve got on too!!
I recommend Ged Green. He's a really nice chap and could happily spend the day in his workshop. http://www.gedgreen.co.uk/ He was building a gorgeous jazz bass last time I was there. He does work for Elbow and the Cranberries I believe.
I'd forgotten Ged!! (DOH!)... I played a few gigs with him...how could I forget!? thanks for the heads up!! too kind.
But that was the going rate at the time! Along with most of my mates I've bought & sold 70s P basses for that sort of price.... Prices of 70s Fenders didn't really increase until the 90s and the advent of Britpop - but not before I completely stripped and customised my remaining 78 precision, making it worth a fraction of what it would be now!
makes you wanna spit!! though, dunnit?
-
I had a fender precision fretless just like clarkys, lateish 70s ( see his thread, so close it really could be the same one! ) it was good, but in '85 when I sold it, to fund a stingray I only got £250 for it. a rubbish price for the time.looking at todays price for the same kit, makes me feel a bit neausous!! at the time no one wanted to know. Ahh well, for what we cannot change..... eh?
