I'm soon to be auditioning for music college, any advice?
witterth replied to JamieBenzies's topic in General Discussion
but stopped me 3/4 of the way through and said "erm, that's great, but can you play a blues?" :-) can blue men waltz the whites? play summat good! a Jacco cover (From an electric bass player of your standard) will suffice! "Come on, come over" for instance, will suffice. I've heard you play, why are you worried? you're damn good!! -
"I get Especially riled up when a headlining band bring nothing to the show, thats the real joke." mmm... I don't know about that one,cos If I'm in the support turn,I've usually Fu@ked off with my stuff when the "headliners" are on!
I went to a jam night the other week in Croydon. After I had been with my lot, I put my bass in the gigbag. The jam night organiser came up to me a bit later and told me there was someone that wanted to play bass with the next band up, but he didn't have a bass so could he borrow mine? I felt a bit of a ar5e saying no, but I didn't know this bloke from Adam, so I wasn't going to trust a total stranger not to scratch up my pride & joy. Perhaps people assume that my CIJ mustang is some kind of cheapo bass as its not as big as a 'proper bass'. Of course it isn't - the current RRP for a new one is £739.99. I almost feel like in future I should not go to jam nights as getting the skunkeye from this chap's bandmates put a bit of a dampener on the evening for me. Or maybe I should make a point of taking one of my weird little Ashborys instead.
No you're not an ar5e. you're in the right! sod him, the lazy geyt, and the horse his "mates" rode in on!!!!

A question for all you Theatre Pit cats
witterth replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in General Discussion
Garrys advice is really on the money. all I would add is, read ,read, read ,til you know it backwards if you will and, maybe this is just me, if you think youre loud enough on your 50w combo(!) turn it down more electic bass that is. oh and dont use a 5 string if the md is an old guy! "Cats"btw..are you out of the 1950s? -
You know, I allways belive that one should allways behave like a gentleman, and shouting "Wa@@ker" ( to use the vanacular) at the top of your voice is not gentlemanly conduct, however... playing an ipod for half an hour when you could have been providing live music makes the guy a cu.... oopps I am not a gentleman.
Several times. I always fond that tv work is so over rehearsed that it is almost impossible to be nervous because, by the time you are actually being filmed, you are bored out of your head! Played live on the National Lottery programme when Anthea Turner was doing it. 15 million watching, apparently. Must have run it a dozen times before we went live so it was like falling off a log. Some other tv work for Welsh tv, Brecon Jazz Festival, odds and sods. I don't get nervous; I worked out years ago that I would have to catch fire for people to notice what I was doing.
That is ..so..so ....right!

you know Pete, what with all that ace kit you have, steely dan tribute band (you may as well be IN the band) filming for DVDs and the rest of it...... is your REAL name James Bond? of course I'm not jealous!
-
If I were a drummer, I wouldn't consider any of my kit (sic) "skeleton" as such. even cymbal stands cost!! BTW I've worked damn'd hard for (and paid for) ALL my gear and kind of resent "lending" it out. Iv'e had some very negative experiences from doing so, as well, (bust cones,shagg@#d pre/power amp) so chancers with no car? nine danke. I know some gigs (charity ones e.c.t.)require/stipulate, back line supplied, but when Its MY gear.. well......I...I....I..phwerrr... do you get my point? sorry to "rant" but I mean it W

I had a situation in the early 90s where a band I was playing for was supporting an "also ran" "madchester" band who had some reasonable, little success but nothing big time!kwim?, both bands had good deals at the time BTW (and we were no better! if not worse! and were certainy support) but at the time there were quite big(ish) gigs involved, any way at a gig halfway through the 10 dater tour, in glasgow (I think) the bass player of the main turn was having problems with his Jazz(It simply and strangley wouldn't work, now I dont care) and as I being a more of a "muso" head ( which I have since found out he found "amusing") had a stingray fretted&fretless and status, all of which I was using for the gig. d tunes ect. Anyway on discovering his own guitar was Fcuked He helped his 'effin' himself to my fretted stingray for the sound check AND subsequent gig , now our tour manager and theirs sought me out as I watched him "take" my guitar said they "hoped it was ok" and .. oh well.... I said it was cause I thought It was the right thing to do to help out..... but from him?.... not a word! thanks? beer from his rider? not even an offer of replacment strings!! in fact one of them asked if I wanted a picture of the Git playing.... I ...declined...the .. the... giftless poltroon. Now amps cabs I can take, but your guitar without asking yourself well .. bad one You know who you are if you read this..... doubt it... Because its probably too "muso" for you. Hes called "Justi#" BTW...HA Ha very indie rock n roll "mondays" is that! god I feel better for that.. and the moral children, is ALLWAYS ask, and do it youself. dont leave it to someonelse.... you'll just look BAD (not in a "good" way BAD )
An even split of £700 per gig for six gigs over Christmas / NY would be enticing for most people, I'd have thought. Peety - If it's £700 each per gig, the next sound you'll here is me tuning up my Strat.
Errr.. hang on I saw it first You know! and mines in tune!.... the guy in the shop said so when I bought it!! -

Things have been up and down for me at the moment so it was great to deal with Jim for a TE cab and commando head, he held on to it for a few weeks (didnt need to due to Very reasonable price) gave a perfect setting the lovley village of louth and a wholly appropriate place to try it out (big church hall) lovley guy to deal with, and his Dad, who happened to be around was a real gent too!! 100% reccomend you deal with this guy- a good one Thanks Jim!!

Life's too short. OK so he’s not managed this in the best way, but get over the disappointment, stay mates and get him to play until you have a replacement. Contacts are important, keep it friendly and you could be playing in one of his bands in the future. From Chris_b +1 on that sentiment -
Bought my Wal Custon Fretless on 25th April 1986 and it is still my main squeeze. I have other basses for fretted/low B work but have not gigged with another bass since around 1990. It still sounds great and no other bass has turned by head since. If I had the wonga, I would order a fretless 5 today. Here the bass here!
