Tribute Bands - don't the active "original" band get miffed?
witterth replied to ben604's topic in General Discussion
They turn Rock n Roll into Cabaret and should be ashamed of themselves. My publishers, Equinox, have a release by Georgina Gregory called 'Send in the Clones: a cultural study of the tribute band.
sometimes it must take some real effort to suck ALL the joy out of a room (yaar to you to, phewww...) -
I've been a big fan of Mike since I was 14 ( That's some years ago) I Played some of his material at the first gig I ever did (imagine a 15 year old doing "Talking Blackpool blues"? not really the done thing looking back, too young for that) the man is one of our most underrated musicians/comedians/presenters/broadcasters. I think after so many years at the Beeb after TV and radio, they have completely shafted him, by "letting him go" I hope in many years to come they don't eulogise about him in a fond way after sacking him 'cos I'd be the first to say "up yours BBC" ( well a more sweary version)

Two good ones. "Falling and Laughing, the restoration of Edwyn Collins" by his Mrs Grace Maxwell ( great feel better read) and "Confessions of a heavy metal addict, hell bent for leather" by Seb Green the story of any one of us here and really quite moving But at times laugh out loud in a "Oh God I've done that type of way" -
Casually chatting with Pino? Nice! If you don't mind saying, how'd you get to know him like that?
I was thinking that too
I can't say I find the arrogant dismissal of any instrument very cool and I find the constant put downs of guitarists on this forum just as tedious as the put downs that bassists sometimes get from guitarists. Playing the bass well is hard. Playing the drums well is hard. Playing the guitar well is hard. Playing one instead of the other doesn't make you better, it just makes you different.
cheer up old son, its all only meant as a bit of a laugh ( but then again you knew that EH?) Playing the Bass isn't that hard but we'll keep that to ourselves just here eh?
Rule 1: The bass player is right. Rule 2: When the bass player is wrong, see rule 1.
Now this, I like. Bass players tend to have the "harmonic" ear that usually only Keyboard players have
Moran, find music you Iove to play, it can seem like an age on stage playing material that does not interest you. Give them a shove and keep looking. Also, 25 songs seem a tad excessive. I have only ever had to learn a max of 6 for an audition.
its Molan, not Moran, unless you know something I don't. I don't think he's a moron, just being "picky" Molan always seems to know his Sh*t 25 tunes (pub covers) is a doddle really init?

status 2000 case (empty!)

This is one for status lovers only. I have got a bit tired of dragging this (original) headless status bass case about its almost bullet proof but a heavy sucker ( so I've ordered a lighter more car/lumbar friendly moulded job from status) so this is up for grabs it is battle scarred but basically in good aeroplane baggage handler proof nick. I'm told its collectable if you are a status "anorak" type. the reason for the cheap price is its scuffed appearance and the fact the internal foam has become tatty ( I have had it for 25 years but I imagine it will last another 50+ if relined) I won't bother with pics cos this is a long shot of any one wanting it but will if anyone wants to see, I will do so I'm in the Rochdale area and best if buyer collects (heavy as I say but tank-like protection) £50 ono thanks Chaps Witters

also glad it went well, I have a similar apres gig ritual which involves an ice cold Belgian brew ( no fags anymore, shame in a way) usually after a long drive . makes it all the more well deserved deserved. new bass? btw?

Does anyone else, sort of, 'flick' the strings when plucking?
witterth replied to gafbass02's topic in General Discussion
no, just good practice I'd say... -
I don't "trust" a bass payer/dep who doesn't like slap bass, its too much fun. you end up with a dullard who loves Flat strings and makes excuses for wrong notes being their "tone" if I was looking for a dep it would be a hi fi player every time. they isn't lazy brother.am I still talking crap?( could be)
Also makie sure you put your hand palm down over the end io fthe mic you speak into (the ball on an SM58) This effectively changes the polar respons of the mic, making it more omni directional and thus tending to bring on feedback if its close, better to do it in the souncheck than when you stick your gob right on the mic to sing and release the squeally noise fairies into the night.
that would be good wouldn't it
Mary had a long black skirt With a slit right up the side And when she wore it The boys could see her thighs... Mary had another skirt With a slit right up the front But she didn't wear that one very often!
now thats where I'm coming from!
My guitarist has a habit of saying "yes" repeatedly in a series of changing funny voices. My old drummer stole the show by speaking backwards into the mic and then suggesting that the sound engineer had plugged it in wrong - bless her, she checked!
Thats exactly the sort of thing I was looking for!

Make sure the contact pieces in the guitar are sound and a spray with electric switch cleaner ( not wd40!) that should do the trick How old is the guitar? if its a newer one, a spray is your best option for those click out compartment jobs

I Know we all do the usual 1....2... etc.... and the comedic genius always impresses his mates by yelling "THREE FOUR!!!" back ( did you hear what I said then great mates??!? aren't I bloody great at comedy, great mates?? , GOD I'm so FUNNY!!) so Ballarks to him I was thinking of suggestions along the lines of summat an old mate used to do, thusly " Mary had a little Lamb she also had a Duck she put them on the mantlepiece to see if they would, Fff...fall off" this used to make me smile Now, I'm aware this is not lenny bruce or bill hicks standard of cutting edge comedy, but the sound engineer, as was ( he was a good one) used to say for a quick line check, it was long enough, and had enough sibilant words for EQing.( if you said Boom Boom on the end) so any other suggestions for that type of thing that will shut up the "gig git" ? (even for a second) Heckler put downs will do, as well mine are really too old (Eg "good evening ladies,... did you come together?...........I'd like to have seen that"..... brum tish) see what I mean?TOO OLD!! help me out here W
