  1. I’m the opposite- I’d rather see a recent thread list so I can really get a feel for what it’s like.
  2. Actually, it could do with being a sticky so more people see it. 😀
  3. Nowt, 'cos I use flats. I'm currently have about £350 worth of new sets sitting on the shelf. At some point I'll have to admit to myself that I'm never going to get around to using them.
  4. I reckon there's a case for the homepage to default to a 'most recent threads' list. Much more interesting and engaging than a flat list of forum titles.
  5. I have an old war story that kind-of qualifies. Was in the house band for a gig a few years back, where one of the guests was Trevor Horn. He was going to perform (of course) Radio Killed the Video Star, and it was all arranged that he was playing bass on it. I was gutted, but totally understood. As he was only going to turn up on show-day, I was asked to learn the bones of it to help the band through rehearsal in the days beforehand. It was quite a complicated arrangement, but I thought I'd better nail it just in case / just for fun. I'm glad I did... at the last minute he decided he just wanted to sing it, so I got to play it.
  6. Ideally, it would be useful to see insights into forum browsing vs. search. Does anyone click through the individual forums to browse the topics anymore?
  7. I pretty much agree, but I'd add a fourth school: "there's a bit v2", to which I belong, that thinks there is some slight effect from the wood which could maybe be predicted based on wood type, but interaction and natural variances within that wood effectively hoys a massive spanner in the works.
  8. I’m so confused. Deroute? Eh? What are you having a go at me for?
  9. You’ve confused me. What about pickup characteristics? Pots? Wiring? All additional factors, surely?
  10. Wait… what? The vibration of a string isn’t what’s picked up by the magnets? I’m learning here. Tell me more.
  11. The vibration of a string is one of the factors that creates tone, right? I'm still a little bit surprised that there are people out there who think that the wood the string is anchored to at each end has no effect on the behaviour of that vibration, and therefore the tone. There's a reason basses aren't made out of dried mud.
  12. As I mentioned when I first got involved in this conversation, my comments are in the context of a hi-mass bridge having a positive effect on Mo Foster’s bass.
  13. Nah, not buying it. How bodies and necks interact is fundamental (if you excuse the pun). Hundreds of years of instrument luthiery will attest to this. Take wood out of the equation and replace it with either nothing, or something synthetic and consistent, and yes, you’re starting from a level playing field. Once wood is in there, stuff changes.
  14. Hang on - are you actually suggesting the resonant properties of wood has no effect on how the strings behave when plucked? Have you never played an acoustically dead bass before?
  15. Im not talking about adding to tone. I’m talking about taking away from it. Knots in wood, air pockets, grain… all these are variables that can cause a clash at specific frequencies and which can kill fundamentals and overtones.
  16. Re: Mo's bass. Another possibility - maybe it had a bit of dead area (we all know these things happen) and the hi-mass bridge fixed it? Of course wood makes a difference. Resonance (or lack of) is important.
  17. Just to clarify - I think it’s good subject matter for BC, but I’m not sure giving it its own forum has any benefit.
  18. Yep, it needs to go in Gear. ***EDIT*** That’s if there’s definitely a need for it in the first place. I can’t really see the point.
  19. I can’t be bothered to watch the video, So for quickness… is is necessary to learn music theory to do what, exactly? That might make it easier to answer the question. Apologies if this has already been asked / answered.
