I'm a big LZ fan, and never understood the Stairway fascination. That bombastic live version by Heart that did the rounds a while ago is properly hideous.
I did a couple of US tours with a band I was in in my late 20s. We were courted by Rounder Records, but before anything could happen a combination of band politics and 9/11 brought it all to a halt.
They were great days (I know I sound like him out of Creme Brulee).
So:
Ceramic drivers have weaker, heavier magnets
Neo drivers have stronger, lighter magnets
Presumably this affects the response of the speaker cone, and therefore the tone?
...or am I looking at this too simplistically?
Yep.. eBay are very accommodating at removing negative feedback... which is also annoying when it's deserved. It's all part of why I avoid eBay if at all possible these days (not always practical).
You're going to get a lot of different opinions here, but IME the HandBox R-400 is worth checking out for a couple of reasons.
It's class A/B so there's no fancy power management going on to squash the life out of the tone (unless you start hitting the rails). It's incredibly dynamic and it's very clean (although grit is available on-tap).
Based on what I've gleaned from chats with TKS' Tommy Södergren, it's fair to say he isn't a box-stuffer either.
Maybe the price difference between Aguilar and TKS could be explained away by stuff from Sweden being cheap in general. Oh, wait...
