I agree - it is irrelevant, and the marketing is mischievous at best. When they (and I'm not just talking about TC here) create a '500w' head that can lay it down with the sheer authority of my 100w valve head, my ears will prick up. I'm a bit bored of false dawns, TBH.

Many Class D's state that their power rating is c.500w. But they ain't.

I can’t remember the specifics, but there’s an audio clip on Youtube of a Rush gig where one of ‘em does a flub, and for a few seconds it collapses into a proper tuneless cacophony. just listen to that section on repeat.

I do a mixture of venue sizes. I play with so many people the consistency of kit just isn't there, so the idea of using ears just doesn't appeal. I don't fancy getting stuck somewhere where there aren't enough mixes, or the monitors aren't up to it, or (or the PA in smaller gigs). It's not exactly a hardship to carry backline around, and if you choose wisely it'll be an easy lift , and sound marvellous. IEMs are clearly the answer to many, but not all.
