Last night I played at Newcastle Cathedral as part of a concert raising money for a cancer charity. There was music, comedy and Christmassy stuff. Amongst other things, we were asked if we would do Fairytale of New York with a wonderful guest vocalist. I love the song, but it's pretty complex, and we only had piano, acoustic guitar, bass and voices to make it work. But I think it came out pretty well...

Unfortunately I have to agree with this. The reason I don't write songs is because I've spent pretty much all my career playing with writers I consider to be top-notch. The bar is just too high. Instead I focus on arrangements, etc. That's my natural forte.

Apart from the two previous posters :-D

A week ago I played Quando Quando Quando in a social club Last Friday I played two sets of original material in a theatre full of people who had paid decent money to see us. Tomorrow I'm playing a set of Christmas Carols in a Cathedral. In a few days' time, I'll be playing Sweet Child of Mine to a bunch of drinkers down the Dog'n'Duck. Y'know, what? I love playing the bass. If I didn't, I wouldn't do it.

Mine's a number of years old, and still in good nick. Weight? Umm... light. Dunno if that helps.

Did someone say Rick 4005?

I've tidied up a few posts - let's keep the discussion on-topic please. Thank you.

What happened to that blogger trying to become a pro bass player?

There's always Google. https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/275462-marks-diaries-the-journey-of-becoming-a-pro-player/ -
Lindisfarne's Alan Hull was a genius too. Love is such a small word for something that is so vast / But in it lies the future, the present and the past Wonderful.

Found it - PM’d you :-)

It’s working correctly. Longer posts are easier to read with full paragraph breaks. Its no different to Word, for example.

That popped up in the car on shuffle t'other day - Mrs. WoT & I hadn't heard it for years. Musically it hasn't dated one jot, but we got talking about how the lyrics would be different in 2017. The line quoted above was one of the ones we agreed was 'of the time', and would probably more likely be Russian, Chinese etc. now. I bet Mr. Currie didn't see that coming in 1989...

100% - like you, none of his solo stuff has done it for me, but this album is a corker. He doesn't try to hide the Floyd references, and IMO it's all the better for it.

He still is. His new album is mint.

I enjoy both. A good song is a good song.

'Cos it's creating a paragraph. If you don't want one, press... ...shift + return.

Insane one-man Rush tribute (not that one!)

re: the voice, he sings them so well in the spirit of Geddy, though. I can quite happily listen to him sing the parts without thinking it's forced. I've seen that Tom Sawyer clip loads on FB, and every time I've just thought 'Why?'. It's like the old That's Life clip of a rollerskating parrot. -

^^Actually, yes. Closer to the 20th fret too. -

No - it's closer to the nut, and further from the bridge (see above pic).. -

Yep, I can confirm the P pickup on the Jake is closer to the neck than my '71 P. -

In the meantime, I've just put this together. It's completely unscientific, but maybe a bit of food for thought.... -

I seem to recall it's slightly closer to the neck when measured from the bridge. I'll check tonight...
