wateroftyne replied to Owen's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps - but the company involved had said to me that they had never any issues with the process so who knows?
Really? Wow. I wish I'd know about this back when I needed it...! -
Import duties on equipment sent for repair?
wateroftyne replied to Owen's topic in General Discussion
It's not as difficult as it is being made out above. Check out the below - https://www.fedex.co.../pdf/USF076.pdf (Document is 19 CFR 10.1 - Domestic products; requirements on entry.) I returned an £2k item (insured shipping was £100 - ouch!) to the States and it was pretty straightforward... you fill in the above item and send it with the item. A similar form is completed for the return journey by the vendor. My post office were pretty clued up - but I would wager it's pretty much pot luck on that front. No hold ups or anything - it did get checked - and it was all like clockwork. Hope this helps!
Yeah - this is gloriously simple but it screams 'Pot luck'. If there's a bit chunk of money involved, I'd be reluctant to take the risk on this method. -

Import duties on equipment sent for repair?

I looked into this once. There was a lot of complicated form-filling and grey areas involved, so I decided against it. I hope you can make sense of it.... -
I think regular pub goers may appreciate live music more if pub bands turned down a little, it also seems to be that the worse the band the louder they play, almost as though being as loud as a jumbo taking off makes up for the fact that they're not very good....
Absolutely - it's getting ridiculous now. I wonder how many of 'em are turning up because they're deaf so they can't hear..?
-
What saddens me is the number of 'young' bands that play a set full of Cream, Hendrix, Free and Bad Company........
Why does it sadden you? Those songs are probably as new to them as anything that's been in the charts for the last 10 years.
Not wanting to argue semantics with you WoT, but there are a lot of instances I've come across where there is no vocal on the verse, but the chorus is tracked, either to give them a double tracked feel if singing, or give them a rest from the verse performance. I can fully understand why she has tracked the tricky bits if she's worried about still being able to hit the high notes, but you're probably right, it is a bit of a con and she should probably just give it up and sing in lower keys/octaves! I think the response above is the best salesman's way of explaining something that is not fully lip syncing, but is in places. Funnily enough, the best one I ever saw was a YT clip of the legendary (and personal hero of mine) BB King playing along to a track on a TV show in the 70's, and you can hear his guitar on the track! He just drowns it out and plays over the top!
No problem - I was just raising my eyebrow at this bit: "Every artist sings to a track, especially in circumstances like that when it’s really loud and impossible to have a great musical performance. You’re not singing at the Philharmonic. Every artist who goes out there sings to tracks."

Interesting interview here which certainly casts the production company and network in a damning light. Not sure about this bit, though: Fans are also accusing her of lip-syncing. From watching the video, it looked like part of the performance was meant to be lip-synced and part of it wasn’t? No. It’s not lip-syncing. Lip-syncing is when people don’t sing at all. This is what people should understand. Every artist sings to a track, especially in circumstances like that when it’s really loud and impossible to have a great musical performance. You’re not singing at the Philharmonic. Every artist who goes out there sings to tracks. O RLY?
I guess the real truth behind it all will be covered up in favour of making Mariah looking like a diva... or giving her a good kicking because she actually has more talent than most modern pop acts.
The real truth could be anything. The fact is, we don't know what it is.
Facebook post from Jay Stollman (ace American blues/rock/soul singer) on the Mariah situation: "Leave Mariah alone! Seriously! She's an amazing singer...doesn't need to prove anything! There was a technical screw up and she didn't handle it too well. I'm defending her! Here's the deal.... she does not have the experience of live performance that a lot of us have. Here's a little story and hopefully some perspective...... Back in the 90's, my band played a party for Mariah and Tommy Mottola....a little party in Armonk NY to celebrate the end of a tour. Mariah, Tommy, band and crew were all there. After dinner, Tommy got up to sing with me.... then, band members and singers started to sit in... eventually the whole party had joined the band except one person.... Mariah. I left the stage while everyone was jamming and went to talk to her. JS - Hey Mariah...first of all thanks for having us! MC - Thank YOU....the band is great! JS - You know, you're welcome to join us and sit in. MC - Oh God NO.....I could never do that. JS - What???? MC - I can't do what you do. I can't just wing it. I do my songs...my arrangements...exactly as rehearsed.... all planned and worked out. JS - Are you sure....do you know like.... Chain of Fools or one of the usual "standards"? MC - I can't. I would never just wing it. JS - Well....you know you're welcomed to join us if you change your mind. MC - I won't.... but thanks! Think about it.... from the beginning of her career, she never did the kind of live gigs most musicians have to do. She had a full production staff and everything was worked out. How many gigs have I done were there were "issues".... thousands! Mariah? Probably only a few, in comparison. She might not be as skilled or experienced at dealing with these issues as some of us. Do I know how to handle sh*t that happens...? sure. Does she? Maybe, not so much...as it's not a usual occurrence of her gig life. "
Well, she's made gazillions of quid out of doing it her way, but now it's bitten her on her the arse.
numbskull here! No idea about the technicalities, but an educated guess concerning the money and companies involved would suggest the people involved are professionals at the top of their game, performer included, who would have planned; rehearsed; dress rehearsed; and sorted out any problems prior to going live?
The suggestion is that she complained her ears weren't working just before going live, but she was assured all would be OK. That's only her side of the story, mind.
For sure - miming is nothing new - that's kinda expected by any pop act nowadays, right or wrong. Madonna, Beyonce, Britney or <insert name>, they've all been caught doing it. Most of the time they get away with it. Even when they don't it's yesterday's news. What you have to remember, is that outside of the studio, these guys are primarily entertainers as opposed to singers... so it's as much about the clothes, the dancing, the stage, the lights... the singing is almost last on the list! (until it goes wrong that is!)
Absolutely - I'm not sure I agree with the 'yesterday's news' bit, though. Right now, I doubt that Ms. Carey would, either :-)
^ Even with all the licenses, you can't ignore stray RF that is beyond your control. Of course, I'm not saying this happened... just trying to say what *could* have happened... and why Mariah doesn't deserve the panning that she seems to be unjustifiably getting. Hell, I'm not even particularly a Mariah fan... but theres too many numbskulls with no idea about the technicalities of such a show to judge her on that performance. It's clear that her performance is dogged with technical issues, not her ability to sing or not.
I feel sympathy for her that her ears failed - that's a nightmare, and if it was only that, I'm sure Joe Public would be understanding. But...miming to the high bits? So long, sympathy. Only her & her management are to blame for getting her into that position.
That don't make it good. Just playable.
One of the covers bands I'm in does newer, dance-y stuff - most of which I'd never heard 'cos I live under a crusty rock - by Avicii, One Republic, etc with guitars bass and drums, and it goes down very well, and it's good fun to play.

Bass? What bass? There ain't no bass until we've seen pictures
here in South Australia, the live music scene died about 20 years ago when they legalised pokie machines and every pub got rid of their dart and 8 ball teams and rooms, kicked out the bands, and put in 40 pokie machines. Five years later they were rolling in so much money, they all upgraded the facilities and put in restaurants and beer gardens. Now,the public are broke, pokie money is dying. I'm hoping they turn to live music to get people back in to their venues again.
My God, that sounds like a nightmare.... fingers crossed for ya.

Has anyone gone from lightweight back to heavy?
wateroftyne replied to AndyTravis's topic in Amps and Cabs
Guess lightweight is all relative, my complete rig weighs less than your cab!
That's the 2x12. I also have the 1x12 which is half the weight :-) -

I forgot to mention my cab as well. So, here we go: Amp: Handbox R-400 - old-school Class A/B, but only 10kgs Cab: TKS S212 - old-school ceramic drivers, but only 20kgs (lighter than many Neos) Bass: Maruszczyk Jake - chambered body, only 3.3kg Lightweight doesn't have to mean Class D or Neo. :-) -

Thanks for posting. I'm in the 'Felder & Leadon should have been there too' camp. Poor Tim Schmit looked awkward as hell - he only played on one of the songs performed. -
Well done...
I'd suggest two versions of it, one a little bit shorter for things where it just gets clicked on then this version on your web page or agency stuff once they've liked you enough to look a bit deeper,
I agree with this - you need another cut that gets straight into it, and says everything that needs to be said within about 10 seconds.
