As mentioned above, a tweak of a knob sorts it.

Yeah, I'm generally averse to excessive EQ-tweaking, so I had to take a deep breath before ramping the mid, but what a difference. So much character. re: the input gain, my old '71 isn't the hottest. It would be set a lot lower if I was using my Maruszczyk Jake.

I'd come to realise there's definitely something different re: the core tone of the 'old' WB-100 and the new mid-knob version (and presumably this applies re: the R-400 too). The new version seems bigger, wider and cleaner. I chatted to Leszek about this, because I quite liked the more complex mids of the earlier version, which just 'happened' with the bass and treble set flat. His answer was simple and obvious - 'Turn the mid knob up more boldly'. To paraphrase the longer answer, the preamp in the new version is built so the mids and highs saturate less readily, to achieve a super-clean signal. So, last night, I did just that. I pushed the mid knob (600) more than I ever normally would on an amp, rolled the bass back a little... and introduced the mid glow I was looking for. Yum.

Did someone say 'Accuswitch'? 😄

Here's another clip from the bass bash on Monday. Something a bit slappity.

^^^^ These are also my preference.

Here's Warwickhunt and Ghostrider jamming at today's Tyneside mini-bass bash. The overdrive you can hear is just the sound of the WB-100's pre-amp being hit hard. The power stage was barely ticking over.

A few Basschatters got together for a mini-bass bash today. It was fun. Here's some of what was there, starting with Howard the Bass Doc's iconic 1963 Precision.

Give them a good rub with a cotton t-shirt to tone down a lot of the initial clank.

One thing I've noticed with the 'new' WB-100 is that it's a lot cleaner than the old one. The old one had massive headroom, but the new one seems to barely break a sweat, certainly not in the bands I'm playing with at the moment. Clean all the way.

A little bit of WB100 from my semi-regular(sic) dep at the weekend. What you're mostly hearing is backline, with a little bit of FOH mixed in.

I’ve asked a function band he was working with a while ago, but heard nowt back yet.

Hmm... the original is more about majesty than groove. It's marvellous. And Sally Oldfield's 'annoyingly folky' vocals are intended to be more choir soloist than folk, I think. The live one above misses the point completely IMO.

I've always REALLY disliked this version. The drums kill it (not in a good way).

It is. I’m seeing the owner tomorrow, as it happens. Don’t think it’s going anywhere for a while..!

That basschat.co.uk rotasound advert.

I suspect she didn’t post the vid to try and get a gig with a function band. -
After seeing the recent ‘Too Shy’ video, I had this discussion with some pals. Loads of stuff was dismissed my my peers and I back in the day for being ‘too poppy’. Imagine if pop music was as good as that today?

One of my favourite Croz tunes. Listen to Phil Lesh's bass... -
Don't bother with posh basses. Save yourself some cash and just get a Wal instead.
