1.
If there were no Beatles, there would still have been a David Bowie and there would still have been a Frank Zappa.
Maybe, but we can only speculate as to what they would have actually been like. And I have to say, I'm with Blue on the 'You had to be there' argument. Of course it's a factor - I can listen to and appreciate their music, but I imagine it's nowt compared to hearing it for the first time, along with everyone else. If Blue believes it was a life-changer, I'm not going to argue. No new bands that broke during my lifetime have changed the world like Elvis, the Beatles or (at a push) punk did.
 2. http://www.ukauction...tion=21EBC80AD6 EDIT... hmm.. you can't link to the search query. Typing 'bass' in the search box does the trick.
 3. I should think the Sean Hurley - if you can find one - will be significantly more than a 700-800 quid premium...
 4.
Everybody whose performing career tanked is influenced in some way by Terry Stafford.
Cool Terry Stafford fact: he wrote 'Kill the Poor', covered later by The Dead Kennedys.
 5.
I'm not sure whether you're taking the piss or not, that's an American chart, and the description you give could equally describe Buddy Holly, except he came form Texas rather than up north, if you are being sarcastic I do apologise
Absolutely not taking the pee... what on earth gave you that idea? I posted a US chart to illustrate the size of the leap from a US perspective - check out Terry Stafford singing suspicion. The UK chart in August '63 tells a similar story. A lot of those bands probably lost a career within weeks. Buddy Holly was fab, and deserves his place in music history, but... he wasn't a gang of scallywags. And could you imagine him tearing his throat up on I Saw Her Standing There...? 'Cos I can't.
 6.
I know what you mean in the later years, say from Rubber Soul onwards, but in the early years it wasn't that revolutionary, very good well written pop records, but not a seismic leap that the period around Sgt Peppers was
Nah, IMO it was a leap from the start for all the reasons discussed previously. From up North, writing their own tunes, harmonies, look, groove (listen to Cathy's Clown, then Love Me Do. The latter has swagger.) It's all well before my time, but I know so many musicians 'of an age' who are doing it 'cos of them. This chart sums up the sea change pretty well, IMO.
 7.
musically they were just a progression of what had been before
More of a leap than a progression, IMO.
 8.
For me and others who are counting the weeks down to Maruszczyk Christmas, could you lucky owners tell us how good he is at keeping to his delivery promises?
Mine were both pretty much on the button, @ 10 weeks. Mind, I didn't clock-watch on the second one - it was just too depressing. And it meant I got a lovely surprise when the sofa shot landed :-)
 9. Is this jumping out through the amp, or is it just happening acoustically?
 10.
You had to be there to appreciate the impact Hank Marvin's sound had. Can you imagine hearing a Strat' through a Vox AC30, with tape echo and a trem' bar having never heard anything like it before. You just had to be there!
...and when Neil Young wrote 'From Hank to Hendrix', he wasn't talking about H. Williams. As for the influence of Cliff & Co., Ringo acknowledges that 'Move It' was probably the first home-grown RnR song they heard, but by then they were already listening to the source material.
 11.
Hi, I bought the other. It's a pretty cool amp but I'm finding that my active basses really hit the input hard and the gain is on next to nothing for a clean tone. This affects output volume. there is no input pad on these amps. Passive instruments seem to deal better with the gain stage. I'm playing around with input valves to try and drop the gain a bit. I also agree the DI is very nice. I haven't really used it in anger yet but will do in the next few weeks.
Ah, that's a shame - I only run passives so it's never been a problem for me. Hope you sort it!
 12. That J pup is far too close to the bridge, too. It'll be a weak as owt.
 13. LOL @ Fender. Typical, though - the 6-strings at least get interesting tops, while the bass gets lumbered with the offcuts from your nan's sideboard.
 14.
Yay! Leszek emailed me to say my R-400 is just about ready to ship, just sorting the cosmetics.
Fantastic! What are you going for?
 15. Try extracting loads of those little widgets from inside Christmas cards that play carols, and sellotape them to squirrels.
 16. Hey gang If anyone else is interested in living with the demo HandBox Red Fighter head for a while after the bash, let me know. Paul / NancyJohnson has it at the moment, and I think he's bringing it along to the do. (It's not to his taste, but if your thing is lots of clean power, it might be up your street. No obligation, just for fun, etc.)
 17. I've been punting my R-400 around locally (I'm not letting it go for longer!), and Leszek has sent another out 'darn sarf' for trial, but I think someone bought that one. There's also a Red Fighter doing the rounds in the south - a different kettle'o'fish, that one.
 18. The producer confirmed it too - An Akai 900 sequencer or something. I'll try and find the interview again.
 19. Hey gang I believe there'll be and R-400 and a Red Fighter at the SE Bash this weekend. Leszek has sent me an explanation of the matrix EQ on the Red Fighter, for anyone who's interested...
 20.
you had to Be Here Now. see what I did there?
I do, and it works on so many levels.
 21.
So Doug went all Genz Benz and found a way of making that ICE700ASC pump out 900W? Or is there a new B&O module i haven't heard of?
22. I love music, and the history of music. The Beatles have great songs and a great story. Anyone who getting into them for the first time now is in for a great journey. That it happened 50 years ago is irrelevant... I'll be going to see the film as soon as I can...
