1.
I have done and have carried a bass in a hard case and another in a gig bag around with me all day. Inconvenient (and painful!), but worth it to know they are safe.
Like many bands, we usually carry lots of instruments, It's just not practical. You just have to weigh up the risks, just like when you get on an aeroplane, or go on a roller coaster, or buy a lottery ticket.
2.
Keep the bass with you, leave it with someone you trust or in the place you are staying, not in an unattended vehicle.
You don't tour much, do you? :-)
3.
It seems that convenience sometimes overcomes common sense, perhaps because, as was stated above, people just don't think it will happen to them.
It's always a risk, but that's what insurance is for.
4.
In what circumstances would it be unavoidable? Band members or friends can take turns to stay with a vehicle, or help to carry instruments.
Fair enough it you leave home at 6pm to travel to a gig, and then head home afterwards. If you're away for a number of days it's not practical to be tied to the car 24/7.
5. Sometimes it's unavoidable. Be sensible, keep it out of view, and make sure you have proper insurance.
6.
They're fantastic live... and great guys (and girl, now, for the past year or so). We've shared stages a few times... they are loonies, but the good kind of loonies. Love them!
Yep.. lovely, bonkers people.
7. Ahhhh.. shucks, everyone! You're very kind
8.
Prices seems nuts at the moment. All at around the £10k to £12k mark!
My name isn't Mark...?
9. HandBox R-400...
10. Yep - we had one a few weeks ago. A big do, and... no stage manager. Complete chaos, and it turned into a war of attrition between everyone involved. No fun.
11.
Exactly my feelings about Kissmet - and finding myself really a bit put out by the focus on covers. Isn't part of the entire point of the show that these are original "part time" bands making their own music? NB quite happy to make an exception for The Caffrey's rather excellent re-imagining of Don't You Want Me. Not sure if that makes me a hypocrite, but I do feel the best covers are interpretations, not imitations. J.
There's been lots of discussion around the whole covers thing, and it's a fair point. As far as I'm aware, all of the featured bands play predominantly original material, but I guess at some point a decision was taken to ask bands to play a cover and an original at each stage to broaden the appeal of the show. I can totally understand the reasons behind it, and as we don't really do covers, we just had a bit of fun learning some. :-) The amount of people who've picked up on our original song from the episode is amazing - it's being talked about more than the cover, which is nice.
12.
Loved your playing (and singing) really excellent band. Would love it BBC4 put the whole performances on youtube as well as all the auditions that didn't get airtime too.
Cheers :-) I assumed - and hoped - they'd be put some full performances on the iPlayer at some point. Maybe after the final?
13. A cup of tea, a digestive, and watch the news. I am SO PUNK ROCK.
14. Lots of off-the-shelf Maruszczyks are in your price range. Here's a link to their P derivative - some of their other models might come in at your budget, too.
15. My Maruszczyk's are around 7.2lbs each. Both play & sound like great P's should, and have no neck-dive at all.
16. Ah.. cheers, everyone. It is warm-hearted, and I'm glad that comes across. It's a genuine celebration of live music. And Hooky was lovely, not anything like as prickly as I'd expected. The whole production team have been completely pro throughout. FWIW, the kitchen bit was recorded via a single - very nice - mic in the room. I'm using my little Ibanez Promethan combo. The gig at the Sheffield Leadmill was DI & a mic'd Ampeg fridge. Flats all the way :-) The final is on BBC2 a week tonight.
17. Thank you! A lot of people have mentioned our cunning choice of cover - truth is, we'd lined it up before we knew where the gig was going to be. Pure serendipity :-)
18. Here 'tis on iPlayer... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07f2hmw
19. Thanks, folks! The adventure continues :-)
20.
Are those from the DI again? In any case, nice job, as usual.
Thanks for the kind comments, Charlie - I'm still learning all the time! And yes, it's the DI.
Great demo again WoT. The amp sounds a lot more HiFi to my ear compared to the first HandBox amp, equally nice though, just different. I'd be keen to see/hear the Dual Channel Class D amp they've got coming too, although I am starting to think that I'm not going to be happy with anything bar solid state these days... As far as your demos go, I agree, it's so much better to hear something familiar and repetitive to get a real feel for how something sounds and how it compares to others. There's nothing worse than a demo for an amp where the player just shows off making it impossible to actually figure out how the gear in question actual sounds in real life. Keep it up man, don't let the haters get you down Cheers, Ewan
I would agree - it seems a lot more SS-sounding, but that might well be because I had the input pretty low. I need to spend more time with it, but someone has just picked it up to have a go of it.
21. Here's an article which gives a bit of background to how it came about... http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/tom-willis/uks-best-parttime-band_b_10394152.html
22. Same for our network - also Cisco. Just started happening this morning.
