There's the North East Bass Bin. As you'd expect, it has a North-East focus, but everyone is welcome. BC is still where it's at, though.

Warwick customer service - proving to be hard work

Sorry to hear of your problems, but my point still stands - It would have been sorted quicker if you'd had the time to chase them up. -
Warwick customer service - proving to be hard work
wateroftyne replied to ead's topic in General Discussion
...but there was a two-month period where you didn't chase it up. Is that right? I'm not saying Warwick are blameless - clearly they're not - but maybe if you'd upped the urgency it might have got sorted earlier...? -

What costs? The return postage for the duff guard? That's understandable. Mind, I'm not sure I get the four months thing... it looks like you ordered the original guard around the 14th of December, and by 21st Jan you had a correct guard. It's not great, but to be fair Christmas was in the middle of all that. -

I'm a bit confused - you ordered a pickguard, and it was a bit wrong. they've sent you another, and now you're seeking compensation? Have i got this right? -
There's nothing inherently wrong with class D amps. Make a decent recording of an Ampeg/Trace Elliot/70's valve amp and play it back through a really good PA and if it had 'heft' then that will still be there, much louder if the engineer likes it that way. The PA will probably be operating on class D amps but they may be capable of 000's of watts. So it isn't class D per se, they certainly don't need to be gutless and they'll handle any amount of bass. Lack of 'heft' then isn't to do with class D. I don't like the term because it is meaningless but so many people perceive a lack of something. So what are they missing? Well it could be distortion as some people have said or it could be a non flat frequency response, but emulators should be able to get most of that back. The plugins used in recordings do a fairly good job nowadays, they may not exactly match an Ampeg stack but I'd venture that most of us are capable of being fooled once it is in the mix. So, if I'm right what we are talking about is the implementation of class D. Plus perhaps some placebo effect (if an amp is heavy enough it will have heft!!!). With class D the designer can offer you almost limitless power at low cost in the amplifier stages. The question is how much capacity to put into the power supply. You are probably only going to need it for peaks, too much power and you'll be blowing the speakers. Why put an expensive power supply in if you are only needing it for a few milliseconds now and again? For PA amps it is much simpler, distortion is the enemy, mainly they operate in a predictable environment so an amp that delivers 300W continuously but will peak at say 1000W makes good sense. I suspect a lot of the power output stages of the current crop of lightweight heads are borrowed from modules developed for PA with a bass orientated preamp/tonestack grafted on. It may well be that some or all of the top five brands of lightweight amp all suffer some restrictions in their abilities to deliver continuous power built into their power supplies or their protection circuits. I can't see how Class D amps are inherently worse than AB amps though.
My criticism of 'Class D' is exclusively aimed at the consumer-level modules used in the bass head market. Not the pro audio stuff.

I dunno. Surely the weight of the driver affects how it reacts? you'd think lighter = quicker = different character...?
I totally agree that there is no clear reason for heavy weight cabs sounding better. The neodymium magnets although smaller physically are still just magnets and speaker experts on here and Talkbass tell us there is no reason for them to sound different.
Not quite. Here's a quote from Bill Fitzmaurice from a while ago that made sense to me:
They are different. Neo allows longer excursion, not because of higher flux, but because the motor structure is more compact. Longer excursion results in higher output with less distortion. Most of us prefer that to lower output with higher distortion, but I guess not all.
I think I fall into the latter category.
Extremely happy i am with it too both bass and strap
It's a great one! I've ended up ordering pretty much the same thing in a different colour :-)

My last one was a PES35, I think.

If there is negativity toward class D in this thread, the thread title should explain why

Heavy blues = Zeppelin, surely?
Not sure he's tried that particular model...
Yup, not seen one in the flesh! Would like to, mind.
Just had a second Maruszczyk PES40 strap turn up, seriously amazing straps for the price. Si
They are. I had to let me lovely aged brown strap go with my Oly Jake. Hmm.. what colour should I ask to be included with my new Jake...?

Has anyone on here ever had a valve pre go bad? I suspect the role of the preamp valve in hybrid deaths is minimal...
If weight isn't a problem, then buy whatever you fancy.
Weight is an issue for me, but I couldn't handle the (IMO) compromise. Yep, I'm playing for the audience, but I'm playing for me too. Thank flip the likes of the Walkabout and AG500 exist, otherwise I'd go a bit loopy.

re: the repeated use of the word 'heft' - it's only used a lot 'cos there's no better word for it.
I'm a very tolerant person, believe me, i couldn't care less about what other people do or think. I'm just tired of having to scroll down the same old posts looking for some usefull info...
Given how you feel, can I suggest it might have been wise to give a thread called 'Reasons for not going micro?' a fairly wide berth..?
All this lightweight bashing is getting pretty worn out... FFS, everytime anybody starts a thread about Class-D/Neo gear it brings out an anti-lightweight angry mob armed with torches, pitchforks and banners with the word "HEFT" written... There's no better sound, there's no better gear, there's no better tone. Tone Nirvana is diferent for everybody and it's achievable from diferent bits of gear depending on personal taste and tonal preferences. I have an idea. Let´s try something new and turn the tables for a bit. Let me talk a bit about Valve Amps... Valve amps are cr*p! It's impossible to get a good clean tone from them. With the volume knob past 1 they start to distort and making farty noises, no definition and detail whatsoever. They are very expensive and require constant maintenance, wich is also expensive. They are big an bulky, are a pain in the b*t to carry and take too much storage space. Best way to carry them is to get an even bigger rack to store, thus adding to the total weight! Health problems normally come with them, normally back issues and hernias. They are very sensitive to active basses and are hard to get a great match with anything other than a Precision. Even though they are big and heavy they are the most sissy amps in the market, if you have the misfortune to knock one while going through a door or drop it just a few cm from the ground the valves pack up and you're left without an amp for you gig... So... will you burn me in a stick or can you see my reasoning? Of course i don't really feel this way about Valve or SS amps, i've had them, enjoyed them, played with them and settled with my current Class-D for my personal tonal preferences. I don't go on knocking everybody that starts a thread about Valve/SS amps just because "my gear is the best sound i've ever had so it has to be better than your gear"... My 2p.
I think you should be relaxed about people's opinions, and have faith in your own :-)
So I was the proud owner of a B-Social for two days for last week... Couldn't get on with it. Seemed to work OK with my lower output basses but it couldn't cope with the 2x9v preamp in my GB giving it a noticeably lower volume despite dialling down the input gain and using the master vol. The Apptek modelling was a joke with an audible delay between playing and hearing the effected signal. And the amp cab variants just providing different levels of boominess - even their own Ashdown models. The unit played audio OK but in the end that was all I was getting for £600 and my iPad docking station is better with more bass and sound spread but costing < £100. And despite me sending a desperate support plea to Ashdown via e-mail via their website, I've had no reply. Not sure this product and the appkit are ready for the market. Suggest anyone interested in this unit test it very carefully first, including the apptek which I know is difficult in the shop but do it. All of this might be me being picky but I'm not sure it is? (Many thanks to PMT Manchester for their support and understanding throughout this episode!)
I'm sorry to say this isn't far from what I expected. Glad you got a refund.
