1.
Its been a long flatwound quest for me. Im starting to think the sound im after maybe doesn’t exist! Basically I want thumpy but with SOME sustain, not just thud. The tension needs to be reasonable (not talking TI flop but not cables either). I play with a pic 99% of the time and suffer from thumb ache on my picking hand, maybe down to technique but I don’t get it on lower tension strings. I also don’t like sets that have the seemingly common dead E problem. So far ive tried:- Picato Flats Lovely sound, just about right tension. E string problem as mentioned above Pyramid Gold Had everything I was looking for bar thump. Fantastic tension, good E string, great feel but just lacked that old school thump. Did I give them long enough? Fender Flats Lovely but slightly high tension Status Flats Thought these were THE one’s….then the E died prematurely L La Bella FS Stunning but too high tension Elites High tension and dead E TI’s Wet noodles Sadowksy Honky middy with not enough thump. Good tension and E tho I play a P bass with DiMarzio DP122 pups into a valve amp and 4x10 sealed cab. I have considered that my pups may not be ‘old school’ enough for the tone im chasing. The holy grail tone im after is the tone Baz Fratelli gets on The Fratellis songs Look Out Sunshine, Mistress Mabel etc on the album Here We Stand Next on list to try are DR’s, Optima and possibly the new Dunlops though im hearing they are very Roundwound sounding
Hmm.. I wonder if the missing bit in the chain is something other than the strings...?
2. These have been around for years - surely someone must have one...?
3. Beautiful. Love the muted finish on this.
4. Why is no-one buying this? It's such a good cab!
5.
Everytime I see one it has a Jazz neck. Why? I like a PJ but I also really love the P neck way more than a Jazz. Not just for the feel but also the tone. There should just be an option.
Me too. That's why I bought... ...no, I'm not going to say it. I'll be mocked.
6.
I will be at Beverley, let me know when you are on and I will stock up on ripe tomatoes☺
Cool.. when are you on? We're last on the main stage on the Saturday.
7. Cheers, folks. A quick bump for any more input (pun not intended)...
8. Hey gang On the assumption it's well implemented, how practical is the James / Baxandall tone stack for a bass head? I know there's only a bass and a treble knob, and you can 'boost' the mids by rolling them both off and increasing the gain. How useable is it in the real world? Any experience...? Pros, cons? Thanks, all!
9. I'm off to Costa Del Folk in Majorca in a few weeks. Looking forward to that one. Apart form that, I'm playing at a few of the rootsier festivals - Beverley Festival, Music on the Marr, Clennell Hall... always good fun.
10. Same story for mine - lowest action ever. A tweak and it was sorted. Mind, the advice about hanging on a bit for it to settle is sensible.
11. Hmm.. I'm not sure Tal has helped shape modern music..
12. Here's a great tool I've found which will help if you're struggling to visualise your Maruszczyk custom build... http://www.ysw-tct.com/tct/default.asp?func=KIJI&kiji=20141229114253.asp#Kisekae_VIM
13. I've been having SO MUCH FUN with this. I should really get out more. http://www.ysw-tct.com/tct/default.asp?func=KIJI&kiji=20141229114253.asp#Kisekae_VIM
14. Ah, gotta love saucy photos from the Maryszczyk casting couch. I'm still at least seven weeks from mine. Assuming I stop changing the spec.
15. Nah, I should make my mind up quicker :-)
16.
I would've walked away and dialed 999. As I said, it's assault plain and simple. I'd be happier a f***-nut like this is properly dealt with than any short term satisfaction of retaliation. Can I ask why you did not consider calling the Police?
This would have been my approach, too, just as if I'd seen it happen in the street.
17. Ma-roosh-chick.
18. Pugh? Pugh? (His brother) Barney McGrew? Cuthbert? Dibble? Grub?
19. Kate Adie? The bloke that empties the bins at Tiverton parkway train station? Bernard Cribbins? Lech Wałęsa? The Supremes? Lembit Opik? My dentist?
20.
Fair point but personally I don't think the output stage is the biggest factor. I suspect the lack of 'heft' is down to inadequate power supplies and the 'tone' of the amp is down to tone shaping in the pre amp stages. My feeling is that it's all in the implementation, class D/SMPS power supplies are still in the early days and people are still rushing out 'me too' products, often with a mass of digital processing going on. Over time people will stop obsessing over lightweight and will buy on the basis of sound alone. Manufacturers will have to up their game in this area and the killer amps of the future will probably be class D.
My point exactly - it's just not 'there' yet. Too much tinkering under the hood, too much BS around output power. There's still a while to go before consumer-level bass heads catch up with what the pro audio rigs are packin'.
21. Look out for this epic new advancement in tuner technology coming soon. I hear they're really good.
22.
There's nothing intrinsically wrong about Class D/lightweight amps but they are all different.. *snip*
As different as amps that generally use the same power module can be... :-)
