And here's mine...just received in the post yesterday! mmm mmm. Looking forward to gigging it (thats the real test!).
Beeyoot.

Gigged it a couple of times so far, with lots more coming up over the next few weeks. Its a beautiful thing - definitely more aggressive than my 'burst, and the bridge pickup is a monster in 'bucker mode. It's a nice tonal alternative - the realist is, I'm happy to play either. Different flavours of lovliness, and all that. The weight is great, the notes are all as clear and even as my 'burst. Mind, it's taking my a while to get used to maple - I do like my rosewood. :-) I haven't got much in the was of video to show off yet, just this from a mellow gig 'tother night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvTE_bmN8y4

Barefaced BB2 + Compact (G2) vs TKS 1126 cabs.
wateroftyne replied to mcnach's topic in Amps and Cabs
Good thread, and it's nice to have so much choice. I ran the TKS S112 and 1126 side-by-side for a while, and your findings mirror mine. I found the 1126 to be very wide, with a big bottom and clear top. Ideal for some (I remember Far0n slapping a away through one at a bass bash and it sounded awesome), but not to my taste. The S112 / S212 rings all my bells, though. They've got the woody mids that I really like, as well as nice, usable lows. Chalk and cheese. -
Yeah, the straps they come with are great. I got a black one with my first, and a lovely vintage brown with my second. It all adds to the 'How much...?!' factor.

Gibson, Marshall and a F****** awesome band!
wateroftyne replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
Great band. A few years ago, my band was gigging at a small but cool hotel/pub/venue up Perth way. I got chatting to a hotel resident in the bar afterwards who'd been to the gig, and asked him how long he was staying for. He said was a musician, and he was playing at the venue the following night. I looked over his shoulder and saw his face on a poster advertising the following night's artist... Simon Kirke. Once I'd recovered, we had a lovely chat. Nice bloke. -

As peerlessly talented as he was, loads of what Jaco does is IMO unlistenable noodling... it's just there for the sake of it. I've got no interest in listening to it because it's technically clever. It just doesn't sound very good. Mr. Jaco & I are in it for different reasons, basically.
Why should the location of the factory will have any bearing on the quality or price of an instrument?
Quality? Didn't say it does. -
It says that the standard series are made in Korea, but the Bob Glaub is a USA bass - http://dlakinbasses.com/prices/ This is not something that I'm looking for, but I have no issues with country of origin or indeed price for the right instrument.
If it's a grand, it's not the USA model. As for it being a bad thing - I didn't say it was. But production is presumably in the Far East to keep costs down. I don't see much evidence of the savings being passed to the consumer. -

£1000 for a bass made in Indonesia (or Korea - can't remember)? A bit steep, IMO. -
Which ones? The standard Jakes? Just a bit of a rounder lower horn. It stops you pricking your finger on it :-D
-
Oh... you should have said earlier. In that case - Maruszczyk. I was hanging on for the new Lakland Skyline PJ with blocks. When it came out, they couldn't guarantee the weight, and a lot of the parts a aren't the best quality. When I spotted the Jakes, I couldn't believe my luck. My exact spec, for a few hundred quid less, and it's not made in Indonesia. IMO, anyone considering a Lakland, Sandberg, Fender, wether USA, German, Japanese. Indonesian or otherwise, should at least check these out first. I'm painfully aware that I bang on about them all the time, but I'm doing everyone a favour :-)
You Sir, are so correct. A true Precision, is a Fender Precision.
But not necessarily the 'best', as sought by the OP.
It was solo. Must say the results really surprised me.
I always take how a bass sounds in isolation with a pinch of salt...
If I was Fender, I'd be livid that this was even a discussion or that the question even needed to be asked.
They should have been on top of this a loooong time ago...
It was done with me playing each bass from behind a curtain - with the amp on stage in front of the curtain - the audience didn`t know what bass I was playing, they just voted purely on what they heard.
Was it in a band context, or solo...?
Oh my! These would be right what I'm looking for if they weren't on the skinner side at the nut, would really have to play one.I I'm currently looking for a P to hot rod or a P style bass as my new main bass in a new project, but I'm yet to find something suitable anywhere with a nut bigger than 40mm. I'm used to 44mm. Anything less than 40mm feels a little uncomfortable to me, which is why I don't get on with Jazz basses. Alas, my search continues! I absolutely love the Yamaha BB basses, but the neck I don't gel too well with, though may resort to just bucking up on that one! Edit: Could some one divulge a little further into their ordering experiences in terms of what options are available? I've seen wateroftyne's thread on his NBD - Maruszczyk Jake PJ and it has me curious. The bodyshape looks a little funny to me on the lower horn to me, but if the rest fits, I can more than live with that!
Just tell 'em what size neck you want and they'll do it. They nailed the chunky profile of my '71P (41mm nut, 24mm thick). I might be wrong, but I think what you're noticing about the lower horn is actually the pickguard shape. Fender's taper to a sharper point.
michael I thought you were a fender man?
I still am... kind-of. I've still got my '71s, but I stumbled across Maru.. err, I mean them who must not be spoken - earlier this year when I was looking for a specific spec P. I was properly blown away and I've barely touched the Fenders since. If Fender did anything comparable I would have been there first, but they don't, so...
To me, the comment "aimless noodling" regarding Jaco sounds ignorant. That's my opinion.
A fair chunk of what Jaco plays sounds like aimless noodling to me - as in, it's there for the sake of it and doesn't really have any musical value. We just like different stuff, 'ol Jaco & I.
-
Quite! This question has so many answers that it will become ridiculous.
I disagree - the OP admits he's a bit out-of-the-loop. This thread will probably alert him to a number of options he wasn't familiar with previously.
