I read the Jaco book recently. Fascinating story.
He was clearly a genius. And an incredible, effortless, game-changing, player.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for him, the music still does nowt for me.

If you look at the Fender headstock objectively and compare it to more modern ones, it looks very paddle-like and unnecessarily large and clumsy. But I like it.

That shape saved Leo a few quid, too...

are there any other basses at this price point that will better this one?

Maybe he'll play it on the TV show....maybe not.
I think you're supposed to enter into the spirit of a charity auction and that it being "one of Sting's basses" is a generous description for the sake of raising some money. He is going to sign it, that adds some value to it.

^^^ this. A couple have surfaced up here as part of charity auctions.

As the current owner of two of those Berg cabs, all I can say is that the TKS cabs must be awesome!
They are. I'll never say a word against the Bergs - I'm a big fan - but the S212 has magic in the mids I've not really had from other cabs.
It's probably just a preference thing.

Has anybody actually done a good number of gigs with an S212?
Me. Shedloads.
It eclipses the wonderful Bergs (of various configurations) that I ran for years beforehand.
I never touch my amp throughout a gig, or use any pedals, but I use my tone knob a lot, palm mute, switch pickups and use a plec quite a lot.
It helps when going from Budapest to Chelsea Dagger, for example.

Out of curiosity, has anyone had a peek inside their S112 to see what driver they're using? I'm curious to see if Stevie's guess elsewhere on the forum is correct!

Eminence, I believe. Not sure of the specifics.

Don't think Bilbo is saying leave the settings alone for every song, more that he won't spend LOADS of time to figure out the intricacies of the tone on the track, especially when a ball park area is good enough!
Happy to be told otherwise, but that's not how I read it.
You are 'avin' a giraffe!!
I would no more seek to replicate the 'tone' of the original tunes than I would dress up as the bass player who played on the original recording of each track!!
I play in a couple of covers bands (amongst others) with pretty wide-ranging setlists. I'm glad I have a choice of pickups, a tone knob and a pick, 'cos the same tone across all of them just isn't going to feel right. Most of the punters won't notice, but the band will.
I had one of these, in walnut.
It was a beautiful thing - active circuit, but very natural sounding. Loads of great tones. Wide, flat neck.
Unfortunately it weighed slightly more than a Humvee so it had to go.
It looks legit to me based on a cursory glance at the pics... decals in the right place, 12th fret dots seem to be the right spacing... pickguard isn't a repro.
What a stunner.
For heaven's sake... I've waited years for a video of this tune, and... it sounds great, but the lighting is cack. What a missed opportunity.
