Seeing as almost all of the major players in live sound reinforcement are producing insanely powerful and efficient Class D solutions now (look at the d&b web site - everything is class D), I think a lot of people are spouting a little bit of misinformed prejudice against Class D amplifiers. There's a whole lot more to a bass amp than just the power amp section - the preamp design, the EQ, the power supply etc. All of these things are important, and if all of these are designed well there's no reason why a Class D can't perform as well as a class A/B. I really think people are having rose tinted... er... ear syndrome when it comes to the amps of yesteryear. A few years ago not a single person was extolling the virtues of their 'trusy Trace AH600SMX'. Now it seems that because of all this new Class D muck, they and other A/Bs are suddenly the greatest amp ever designed. Remember what you are comparing - lots of people are comparing say the GK MB500 - a £450 amp against top of the range Trace gear from the 90s which cost £1K plus, with the best quality pre-amps, power sections and PSUs that money could buy. Hardly a fair comparison! If you whack your bass through a nice pre-amp into one of the new top of the range Crown or d&b Class Ds power amps, I hardly think you are going to be 'lacking heft'. They are ridiculously good!
I don't think the Crown or D&B stuff uses the same ICEPower module as the lightweight heads being discussed here. Until that changes, I think there's a lot of truth being spoken here.

Mesa Walkabout. Ideal for those who want a small-ish head with a proper amp in it.
I doubt it matters but I think they are covering themselves legally.
I suspect it's likely to be more of their 'creative marketing'.

I'm guessing it's neither, and it's just a limitation of the software.
This would be called 'Marketing' by anyone else and generally speaking anyone who's got anything to sell does it - to a greater or lesser extent. Probably all manufacturers of bass gear are in the habit of emphasising the most attractive, saleable, differentiating or - rarely - unique characteristics of their product(s). At the end of the day it's either loud (or loud enough) or its not. Given the reams of threads and comments on this subject I still can't remember reading anyone who's said their particular RH series amp wasn't loud enough for them or that they somehow perceived it to be quieter when they caught up with the 'science' that informs the claims for the higher wattage output. It's been said before that watts and decibels/volume are not the same thing. Compare 150w of any Trace head made to Ashdown's 500w Superfly, for example. One is most certainly louder than the other and it isn't the one with the higher claimed output. Does that mean the Superfly wasn't genuinely putting out 500w in the first place or that there was something about the management of that 500w that meant it didn't play as loud as 150 watts of Trace? Personally, no idea. Don't know, don't really care, but I cant remember quite the same level of hoo-ha accompanying that apparent anomaly. Now, full disclosure: I own an RH750 myself. It sounds great, has some really useful features and plays considerably louder than I'll ever need for my purposes. That's good enough for me.
I know this same discussion keeps coming around every few months. FWIW, I agree with chris_b that TC have been disingenuous at best. I sold mine before the wattage 'scandal' came to light, because IMO it just sounded weak. If I had to try and describe it, I'd say the power management system bumps up the loudness at the expense of the dynamics. SImilarly, my car stereo is loud, but dynamically it's as flat as anything. It probably uses the same power section. ha ha. I mentioned on here recently that after spending a few years in a class-D wasteland using amps that do use the same power section, I realised that whenever I use an amp with a lump of iron in it, I just don't have to turn it up so loud. The dynamics are just there and I don't have to use more volume to try and compensate. Anyway, plenty of people use the RH450 / RH750 and love 'em. So it's all a moot point.
I can't find any spec that says what wattage it gives out at 8ohms.
Just do what TC do and pull a number out of the air :-D

It's fretless. You've got a string fixed between two points, and stuff happens inbetween. Have fun finding the stuff you like. Here endeth the lesson.
My limelight has arrived! 66 Jazz style, but P/J, with Master Vol/Blend/Tone. Note the tuning heads I sourced in Germany It's a little lighter than the dark sherwood green I was going for but it's still lovely looking. Mark forgot the chrome pickup cover over the P pickup but that's ordered and I will fit it myself. Looks fantastic and amazingly authentic. Sounds wonderful too! Are PJ's allowed?

FWIW, I spent many years in what was, to me, a micro-head wilderness (RH450 included). I eventually realised: whenever I used a head with a lump of iron in it, I didn't have to turn it up so loud for it to feel 'right' in context. Controversial (or bunkum) maybe, but I can only speak as I find.

Here's a bit'o'noodling with flats. It's just recorded on a Zoom Q2, so it's far from the peak of sonic excellence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfUCZ1EMPMU -
Lovely. Nice amount of relic'ing, there...
Alphonso Johnson recommended him to replace Steve Hackett. Steve Hackett was focussing on his sick daughter and being given a lot of grief by the others at the time over his lack of committment to the band.
Oi fink the sick daughter thing was Mr. Gabriel during the recording of The Lamb. AFAIA, Hackett was just hacked off that his tunes weren't being included on the records.

The problem with the repro stuff - apart from the colours - is that it's too sharp and focussed. It's just not organic. Here's some old pics of mine, all '71-ish. The colour balance is all off, but you'll get a feel for the pattern:

Don't panic... Maruszczyk have come to the rescue with the Jake and the Elwood. Here's my Jake. Cheaper than Sandberg, too :-)

It looks like fairly typical better-quality tort. There ain't nothing like the real thing, unfortunately....
-
I completely agree. Most engineers assume you use flats 'cos you don't like being heard.
-
You can get a flatwound sound from roundwounds, if you take all the tone off your bass. But you can't get a roundwound tone from a bass fitted with flatwounds.
Nah. What you get there is roundwounds-with-the-tone-rolled-off tone.

Another rehearsal with it last night, this time with grumpy old flatwounds on it. It sounded nice and fat, and it's a dream to play... -

At the 8.5lbs I was expecting, they would reduce the risk. At the 7.2lbs it turned out to be, they almost certainly avoid neck dive. Mind you, it doesn't feel close to tipping over. I don't know how they've done it....
