1. Mine'll be a while yet. :-( Honestly, the level of detail if been able to specify is incredible. Adrian has been so helpful and patient.
2.
There is a German-made fiddle pickup that is mounted in the sound post, which is fabulous - can't remember the name offhand, but it's not cheap.
Possibly Schertler?
3.
aha! what did you go for? what did you go for?
It's a secret. I've been waiting for Fender to make something similar for years, but it shows no signs of happening. I'm guessing it would have cost the far side of three grand if I'd gone to the Custom Shop, and I still wouldn't have been able to specify everything to the nth degree like I've been able to with Adrian. As it stands, it's going to be hand-built with top-drawer bits, and it's going to cost less than a Lakland Skyline. Incredible. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but I'm SO excited...
4.
My '72 P is the same at the first fret (21mm) but a little deeper at the 12th fret (25mm). Measured using digital calipers.
That's great - thank you. The reason I've asked is that I've measured my '71 for someone (no, I'm not selling it), and when I told them it's 24mm at the 1st and 25mm at the 12th, they mentioned that that's unusually big...
5. Hey gang If you have a (preferably early) 70s P, and you have the means to be able to, could you measure the depth of the neck from the back to the the top of the fingerboard at the first fret, please? (Just to clarify - to the top of the board, not the top of the fret.) Also, I'd be interested in the measurement at the 12th fret too. Thanks for your help :-)
6. He's confirmed that the necks are clear lacquered :-) My order will be placed soon...
7. Ah - thanks for reminding me about the lacquer! I'll ask him. I'm gradually pinning everything down. He's being very patient with me...
8. He's literally just replied - if I send him the dimensions of my '71, they'll copy it. :-)
9. Subscribed. FWIW, I've just emailed the same question to Adrian...
10.
wow, some very attractive instruments there! I wish I could try them, I love the look/specs/price of some of the Jakes in stock! I wonder what the neck is like. I love the wide "Classic 50s" Precision style, and I'd hate a Jazz type neck... Pity the necks are not lacquered either. Hmmm... You are a bad bunch, putting ideas in my mind, and I am indeed looking for a Precision at the moment...
I've had an email chat with Adrian. You can spec pretty much any neck profile you like. Didn't realise they weren't lacquered - I wonder if it's an option? I'm really struggling with specs at the minute. I want a passive PJ that nails the P tone, but there's so many options I don't know what would suit me best. Also, to get my target weight (3.8kg) Adrian says I'd need to go for a chambered body. Just wondering how that would affect tone. So much to consider...
11. The key to a successful dictatorship is having faith in the dictator. The dictator wants me to play bass. It's not so they can micro-manage what I play. It's because they trust me and know whatever I do will be right. If the dictator is making bad decisions, time to go.
12. Just bought something from Andy - it arrived within a couple of days and was perfectly packed. Brilliant. Cheers, Andy!
13.
Did you get the vibe of what happened 50 years ago? I would like to go, but no idea if you get the sense of what happened. I don`t believe you need to be around at the time to get the feeling of the place, but if all the history has gone, it will be hard to get any sense of what happened. It could be true, as i wasn`t born in the late 1800`s. I went to Tombstone a few years ago, and it was hard to feel any vibe there. I couldn`t really imagine Wyatt Earp strolling around the place. Seemed like a theme place more than anything
Yes, I did. A lot of it feels like a cash-in, but I've read enough books and heard enough accounts of what it was like to let my mind fill in the blanks.
14. WoT Jnr. is called Jet, which may or may not be a coincidence...
15. The most 'successful' (I don't mean commercially) bands I'm in have a dictator who is aware of their strengths and limitations. His or her judgement is trusted and respected on the stuff they really know about, and the rest of the responsibility is shared.
16. Thanks! And when you say the tuners are on the flimsy side, would you say comparable to standard Fender tuners, or flimsier than that?
17.
I have the single pick-up version just like a good old P bass. I replaced Adrians pickup with a Dp122 that has more growl and output. Adrians pickups are very clean and I just wanted to rough it up abit. Also put flat wounds on for a mellow vibe. The fret ends are finished to a high standard and I can't fault the workmanship. The only thing I don't like are the tuners as they feel a little cheap. Something has to give for the price. The neck is somewhere between a jazz and a P, just feels perfect for my hands. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Spyder. Is the neck quite shallow front-to-back, or does it have a bit of substance to it?
18.
I really love my Jake. Better than a Fender and around half the price with the Euro about 0.72p. I'm saving for an Elwood. Got serious GAS
What pickups do you have in yours, if you don't mind my asking? What's the neck profile & weight like? Are the frets nice and smooth on the ends? Thank you...
19. I'm seriously considering a Jake, but the amount of custom options is threatening to make my head explode. Mind, I love Adrian's voice. It's so soothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oicxvq2A95g
20.
pretty good...!! FWIW, I've played a 750 and it put the volume out there... and who can tell what such and such watts really is supposed to mean. All I ask is is it loud enough in that regard? I was less convinced with the sound when I went back to try it again, tho.. so I lost interest.
There's more to bass notes than volume, innit. :-)
21. I visited Haight, Topanga Canyon, etc. at 29, and I found it to be awesome...
22. In addition to the Barefaced suggestions, I'd seriously consider something from TKS Engineering, but your 8ohm requirement might limit you somewhat.
23. By the way... Re: club threads, they're all over BC already, but they just don't have 'club' in the title. They're an incredibly useful resource for anyone who is interested in a particular brand. I've never quite got the negativity toward them. Apologies for going OT.
