Well, I'm two gigs into a three-one-the-trot run, and I LOVE THIS THING. Lots of comments from band-mates and punters about its tone and looks. And the best bit is: the world hasn't ended because it has a Fender logo on it. Happy days, man...
-
Aye, it's all a bit silly. Some people like something. Others can't see the point in it. And the world keeps on turning....
-
Nash's headstock logo is too sparse for my liking. I like something that makes a bit of a statement, like Lakland's, or the Fender TV.
Trickier, yes; but my Jazz is fairly well relic'd - and the decal is on top of the finish, as was the case on early Jazzes
Yip, but if you're looking at something from the 70s it's not quite that simple... :-)
-
Exactly. It's not difficult to do.
Unless it's supposed to be under the lacquer of a well-relic'd headstock. That's a fair bit trickier :-)

Yep. It's a shame.
Like most British people of a certain age, I grew up hearing and liking Queen without ever really being a fan as such, but when I listen to their music now I realize what a creative band they were with such a unique and distinctive sound. As well as John Deacon, it worth mentioning that Roger Taylor was ( and I expect still is) a very powerful and skillful drummer, and he made a huge contribution to the sound of that band, too. Another underrated player.
As it 'appens, I always had Roger down as the weak link. A classic shed-builder, who can't hit his snare without opening his hi-hat which wears on me pretty quickly. Doesn't spoil the band for me, though.

I didn't get on with the micros I tried. MESA Walkabout for me. A little bit heavier than a micro, bit not much.
OK fair enough. Those of you who did order a Limelight bass built to your spec why did you have a Fender logo put on it?
FWIW, if I ordered from 'new' (and at this time, that's likely to happen) I'd ask for a TV logo, 'cos it's a classic. I just like the look of them, and I say that unapologetically.
-
So did you buy it second-hand or was it made to your specifications by Limelight?
Second-hand.
-
Then why are they there? And does your Limelight bass have one?
'cos it was there when I bought it. Is this a trick question?
-
Why do they have a Fender logo on the headstock? Is it really so important?
For me? No.
-
This is getting silly. I can see people falling out over this, and it really isn't worth it!
I'm not falling out with anyone.. I'm just correcting where I have been misunderstood.
-
Hmm.
If you own one and are happy with it, then that's cool - but why should that stop others discussing what they see as a potential issue and something that they feel uneasy about?
When have I suggested people stop talking about this? Even when it started to take over my NBD thread I let it go. I simply pointed out that it's a shame the usual tired argument seems to be overshadowing what's on offer, and I suppose extended discussion like this could possibly lead to it being withdrawn, which IMO would be a bit of a head-shaker and a win for no-one.
Just a quick question - ball park estimate, what's the cost on these limelights that everyone has?
Knock yersel' oot: http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses.htm

I don't think there's grounds to delete it. But, I do think it's a shame that rather than discussing an exciting new-ish supplier of very nice basses for reasonable money, so much of the conversation has focussed on recycling the bleedin' obvious. Especially as no money has changed hands on the understanding that these are anything other than Limelight basses. But, c'est la vie.

NBD - Limelight Jazz Bass 1960 YOB *Spitfire Guard!*
I thought that was the body, neck too?
No, you're absolutely right - it's the bodies. I haven't quite woken up yet. Not sure about the neck. -
I'm interested in the neck, Allparts do you think?
Made in Scotland, apparently. -
Don't think that's true any longer. http://www.jemsite.c...case-88745.html
I might be wrong (it frequently happens) but I think that ruling applies only to body shape. The headstock shape is still Fender's.
I think it will only be a matter of time before Mark's operation appears on Fender's radar. After all, this forum has quite a significant readership in the US and some of those guys are very nationalistic... In their eyes, a small UK builder "ripping off" their iconic US brand would be unforgivable.
FWIW, I posted a thread on TB and it was very well received. But yes, I suppose there's always they chance someone out there will raise a red flag and spoil the fun.
But what is the target market?

People who would love a vintage Fender but can't afford one or can't justify the expense?
People who want others to think that they can afford a vintage Fender?
People who own a vintage Fender (or more than one) but would rather not gig them in public due to concerns about damage or theft?

You forgot:

People who want a bass in that particular colour scheme, with that particular spec, and don't really go for shiny instruments.
And:

People who've played one, and bought it 'cos it was nice.
I'd fall into the latter category, BTW.
Some people get on their high horses about "fake" vintage Fenders on sites like Ebay and Gumtree - whereas on this thread some of those same people seem to have no problem with a range of basses that are trying very hard to look like vintage Fenders, but aren't. I think there is a bit of irony there. Maybe you don't - but that's cool.
You're quite right - there are a lot of fakes about, and selling them as legit is a bad thing. Thankfully, none of that is going on here.
-
Seriously, I'm looking forward to the reports, Discreet...
-
But what about this? Hmmm? Eh?
Not many audience members (or even fellow bass players) look at the back of the headstock...
And even less of them care
