1. Whoops - the video was flagged as private. I've made it public, so you can see it now.
2. A big part of the fun for me is the social and interactive side of it. I do plunk away in the house, but if that was my only outlet I'd probably lose interest.
3. This is a bit of a crappy test, but here's a recording from last night. It's crappy 'cos the gig is totally acoustic, apart from my little Promethean combo, so it's very low volume. And there's very little light in the room. But.. it'll give you an idea: https://www.youtube....h?v=S9g_d4epRWA
4.
It depends on what musical situations you put your self in... If you have a bunch of jazzers busking standards..the leader will have pads or dots and you will not survive ( even if you get invited on the gig ) if you are faffing around in the dark. So, first off, learn to follow a basic chart and follow chords. When you get to a solo... and they will give you one or two... it helps to know what notes you need to be able to use over the changes as all the band will stick to the chart.... or at least count the bars of the rounds so you all come back into together from the top... ( ha, ha ..more terminology ) If you don't get to do this sort of thing, or don't want to.... or only play with 3 pieces, then you have less chances to clash notes... So, yes, happy and sad will get you far enough... but it wouldn't get you far if you want to play in more diverse situations.... Depends on the playing circle as well.... you just need to understanding the ways of communicating of the bands you get to play with. The more you know, you can use it or not...but you don't have that choice if you don't have it. so you'll never loose a gig just because you have knowledge, but there are a fair few that you will be excluded from even thinking about....IMO.
This.. I have no interest in playing Jazz, or on a boat*, and I'm in bands with people who communicate in ways other than in-depth theory, so I don't feel limited. *Actually, I'v played on a boat quite a few times, but it was the Shields ferry on the Tyne.
5. Errr.. I know the happy scale and the sad scale. Does that count?
6. Here's my favourite..
7.
My appologies for the bumps, but none of my posts were showing up on 'New content'. Looks like its all back to normal now.
It will have done, but you probably have 'Content I have not read' selected in the right-hand side, or something like that.
8.
Omnivores wouldn't think so but a veggie mite.
We'd butternut get into all that, though.
9. You power it via a mini-USB PSU (available separately).
10. I'm going to give mine a run out on Thursday. I'll report back. First impressions... nice. Cheap crappy plastic, but no surprise at the price.
11.
Time to change strings on an old Ibanez bass.....i've used Rotosound since i began playing so fancy a change.....what d'ya reckon i should put on there? Seems like it should be easy to decide.....but i can't lol
What do you like about your current strings? What don't you like about your current strings? What kind of sound do you like? What kind of stuff do you play? ...etc. :-)
12. You can get a similar effect by hitting bed springs with drumsticks.
13. I listened to Counterparts for the first time in years a little while ago. I was never keen on it oiginally, but from this distance the actual recording sounds great. What I would give for them to record an album so direct and punchy, rather that the nonsense they're churning out now.
I wonder how much of it is linked to some kind of contract with Fender? I believe the Geddy Lee sig J bass is one of the most popular J models ever made. The fact that Geddy himself has played one (or something similar) pretty much exclusively for the past 20 years must keep the model in the public eye to some extent...
I doubt Geddy has any contract with Fender - I'm sure they're falling over themselves to be associated with him. :-)
14.
I counted 6 basses.
There's a few more in the other room by the spiral staircase...
15. Hi all A few of you have probably used Sounds Live in Newcastle when buying mail order. If you're curious, they've just put a Google Tour up so you can see inside... http://bit.ly/SLTour
16.
You are absolutely right about Rush's normal set ,WoT, but I was thinking about the recent "themed " tours, where they played Moving Pictures and with an emphasis on 1980's material, and now this mooted tour in 2015 where, according to this press release, they are threatening to revisit the 1970's. What I can say with complete conviction is that if Rush are going to play the songs from the 1970's era then Geddy Lee has to play his Rickenbacker, or people should ask for a refund. The prospect of them rattling through material from Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres with that crappy Jazz Bass/Sans Amp tone he favours nowadays doesn't bear thinking about.
Ah, gotcha. TBH, the thought of Geddy's current voice tackling the old stuff fills me with dread...
17.
Bands like Rush who tour the World doing these greates hits shows remind me of a modern version of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show , giving audiences a chance to glimse a very safe, family-friendly recreation of something that was once spontaneous, a bit dangerous and real .
I agree with most of your post, but I have to pull you on this point - I don't think they can be accused of peddling out greatest hits over and over again, not that they could do a show full of greatest hits anyway. They're continually pushing the new stuff.
18. I'm a huge fan, but I didn't go to the last tour for a number of reasons: high ticket price, awful sound previously, Geddy's voice, CA's cheesy sixth-form concept and the tacky string section. (Yes, I am a fan. Honest.) A fan-focussed set-list might tempt me back, but they'd have to massively drop the keys of most of the songs for it to work.,,
19.
We used to have Lover Of The Bayou by Mudcrutch in our set. It wasn't as good as Petty's version though . . . www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln7F-a05aQI
Both good, but the original is better... While we're on the subject of Tom Petty and 'Feel good'.. OK, it's not his song, but still... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CH8hkzmXfk
20. Ha ha.. a similar thought had crossed my mind. I should point out that the string can easily be tucked underneath, avoiding any similarities :-)
21. Hey gang I've been doing a lot of palm muting recently - it really suits some of the styles I'm playing. Playing with my thumb gets a bit tedious after a while though, so I've been experimenting with different sponges etc. Unfortunately, none of them have worked out, 'cos getting them in and out between songs is a bit hit and miss and they never quite feel right. So then, I thought about the Bassmute. But that's expensive, potentially marks the bass, and even if I could afford one it seems he's gone out of business anyway. So step forward Amy at Patton Mute Pad. She makes cool little mutes in a variety of different fabrics, customised to fit your particular bass. It have a string attachment so you can install it in seconds between songs, it does the job perfectly. Slide it to and fro for different degrees of mute. What's more, it cost me around $20 including postage. Yes, it's more expensive than a chunk of sponge, but it's far more elegant than that. She's a delight to deal with, and it even comes in fab packaging. Marvellous. 100% recommended.
