1.
True, and the American Vintage series were fine instruments. But you don't turn round a culture of almost two decades of cost cutting overnight, and Fender were putting out some rather bizarre instruments around that period. I think it would be wise to try any Fender from this period before buying, but then again that's true of most basses.
Bill Schultz had a damn good go at turning it around overnight - that's why production was pretty much halted for a spell, and then slashed. Weight aside, the QC was a night-and-day change. Obviously I'm not saying everything was great, but...
2. Probably the dregs from the tail-end of the CBS regime.
3. Can they drop any lower than 195 quid?
4. LOL THIS DRUMER IS AT TEH RONG GIG LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZyaOlrb7E
5. Contrary to what's been said here, Fender were putting out some of their best basses around '83. In 1982 there was a management buyout and production was scaled right back in an effort to improve quality. Weight could still be an issue, but generally speaking the the fit and finish was as good as they ever achieved. That said, as someone mentioned earlier, every instrument should be treated as an individual case.

7.
I hear you don't worry, I'm just pointing out that in the real world of gigging which is what matters imo the venues can rightly send you packing if you were asked, your not legal requirement won't wash.
Absolutely. Interestingly though, having gigged all over the UK at venues large and small, I've only been challenged once... by the misinformed venue I mentioned earlier.
8. All true. But, despite popular perception, it's not a legal requirement to PAT test your gear. That's all I'm pointing out. Cor blimey. This is hard work. :-)
9.
Which then leads to the smart arses on here who think they can tell that to the venue, I have seen entertainments licences, fire officers inspections and the venues insurance requirements demand them as part of the agreement. I agree with you and you could point that out to the venue if they say its law, no its not you are correct but they still might be legally obliged by someone else which by default then does make it law, just not the same one
I would be one of the smart arses you refer to. I let a local venue know when they insisted my gear be tested before I could play there. They were surprised to hear that it wasn't a legal requirement. It was a local PAT tester that gave them the duff info. Funny that.
10.
The info in that link is all well and good but if the venue's insurance require it for entertainment carried out by persons using equipment provided by someone other than the venue (as theirs is tested) then it is compulsory for the gig to happen.
I only posted it to emphasise that it's not a legal requirement, which seems to be one of the misconceptions amongst musicians and venues alike.

12.
Do we have any theories as to why that might be?
Yip. In't old days - and the golden era specifically - they were consistently writing and jamming AS A BAND (Apologies for shouty capitals - can't get italics :-) ) in soundchecks and the studio. They would spend time on the songs, try them out live.. refine them, tweak them, throw out the bits that don't work. And, more importantly, develop the melodies and the syncopation of the words. These days, they have X amount of time booked in the studio. They turn up, shunt all their ideas together in ProTools, and slap a half-formed melody on top with forced, wooden phrasing that doesn't really fit. And, on the last album, the producer conducted Neil while he played the parts. FFS.
13. There's a lot of myths and confusion around PAT testing. Somewhere amongst the murk lies the truth, and I suspect it heavily involves people fabricating nonsense to sustain their livelihood.
14. Sellers can ask what they like for stuff. If someone wants to try and profit 'in cold blood' from the BC community, that's up to them. I wouldn't do it, but that's my choice.
15. I think he's an awesome drummer. Very musical. The R'n'B influence in his style gave Genesis a feel that elevated them above other prog bands. IMO.
16. I think anyone buying a high-end bass as an investment is a little bit daft.
17. Wales, I think...?
18. I use a Walkabout, and I play quite a bit of country / roots. Have a look at thiis thread for some cabs that are a perfect match for the Walkabout, IMO... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/212014-tks-engineering-112-cabs-new-to-the-uk-review/
19. I should really add something to this thread, as it's what made me aware of TKS Engineering, Out outcome is that I got these, and couldn't be happier: 10kgs(!), ceramic drivers, steel grille under the cloth, and incredibly reasonably-priced. They're voiced very 'old school' which suits me (there are other lightweight cabs in the TKS range that have bigger lows), but a pair of them has all the authority I need, while a single cab gives me all I need for smaller gigs. Here's a thread with the full story...
20. I'd love a sunburst CS RH. I'd learn to love sunburst. If I didn't already.
21.
Oooh! Now that's nice! Available with tweeter?
Innit? I imagine it is - the current 112 is available with a tweeter...
22. As I mentioned earlier, TKS are about to launch some new, and redesigned cabs. Tommy's just posted an example of the design for the new cloth-grilled 112, which has had the port moved to the rear. Yum.
23. I also think there's 'volume' and 'volume'. In my experience so far, there's a characteristic of Neos that I don't quite gel with. It could well be that they're more accurate and efficient than ceramic drivers, which I imagine to some (most?) people would be a huge benefit. I'm using a couple of (extremely) lightweight 12s now, with ceramic drivers, and they give me the sound I've been looking for whilst saving my back from any more grief. It's a nice halfway house, I think.
24. Forgot to mention.. I'll be bringing this lot: ..and my Roscoe Beck IV. And, if the planets align, I'll be bringing some new gear along loaned by the manufacturer to give it its UK debut.
25.
I'm giving this another shout on Twitter, and I'll keep reminding our followers until the date
Thank you very much!
By the way, WoT, may I suggest unpinning the Staffs Bash (been and gone) and pinning this thread instead, alongside the SE Bash thread? You can do it cos you're a mod As always, please take photos and record stuff for the rest of us
Good idea - done :-)
