1.
I think the producers need to try and go a little more mainstream as it's often hard to find anyone with a positive comment about the show. Very BBC in this regard, no advertisers to answer too (they don't listen to license fee payers).
I disagree - BBC peak-time has this covered, along with seventeen million commercial radio and TV channels. I'm glad a teeny-tiny part of the license fee is going towards challenging people...
2.
That's part of the problem with Rush now, it's so 'big' a show that they probably can't get their heads round the concept of popping in a studio with minimal kit and knocking some songs out. It would have to be the full on entourage taking over massive amounts of space, BBC studio probably couldn't handle it.
it would do them no harm to be reminded of what's at the core of their existence...
3. I;m in the bulk of my bands with one of my best and oldest pals, and my wife. And virtually all of my other band-mates - actually, all of 'em - are great people. So... yes,
4.
As a fender fan boy and avowed hater of coffee table fancy wooden tops I should hate this bass. But I don't. I really think its a great looking piece. On sale at BassDirect for £1500 if anyone's interested (its a Warwick Thumb 'Dirty Blonde' - perhaps the name is what's hooking me!) Not buying it but thought I'd post up in case anyone else fancies a pop
You're not Clarky. Where is he?? What have you done with him??
5. Hi all After four years' loyal service from my Berg HS210s, itchy feet have got the better of me and I've worked out a deal with a fellow BCer to trade 'em for the 12" stack. I'm not sure why, exactly... they're Bergs, so they're going to be great. Just a different flavour of great. My only reservation is whether my Walkabout will give a single cab sufficent juice on smaller gigs. Most of my bands aren't loud, so I'm sure it'll be fine. Yum...
6.
I thought Alex's guitar sound was actually much better than it has been for ages the other night. Looking at his gear list for this tour he's not using as much Hughes & Kettner gear & is also using the Fractal audio effects stuff which seems to have improved things considerably IMO.
Really? Good. Are you listening, Geddy?
7.
I think that has more to do with Geddys bass sound being a horrible distorted mushy fart than anything else. If a sound guy is given a sh*t sound to start with there's not much he can do with it to be fair.
+1. I don't know what Geddy is thinking of these days. or Alex, for that matter. Mush.
8.
A picture like this shows me what your bass looks like:
So... this particular bass is grainy and indistinct, then?
9. Whoops... Could a mod do the honours, please?
10. Hi all I'm toying with the idea of trading one of my HS210s for an HT112ER (with a few quid in my direction). Comes with a fitted Berg cover. Alternatively, I might consider trading both of 'em for a pair of Berg 112s. Just thinking about it at the mo... anyone interested?
11.
Hmmm - I wonder whether this may be the problem. I generally have my action set fairly high and over the past few weeks I've been gradually lowering the saddles bit by bit without touching the truss rod. One of my many bad habits is that I tend to strike downwards with my plucking hand (never use a pick) which means I have to set the action quite high to stop me bouncing the strings off the frets. I've put a new set of strings on. I've got the expected zingyness which slightly confuses the issue, but the good news is that the barky mids have been reduced noticeably. Still missing the rich, full bottom-end P-sound however.
Good stuff :-)
12. Oooh... I haven't chipped in...yet: Words can only begin to describe how good this lot sounds...
13. I went through a phase a while ago of chipping away at the action on one of my Ps, making it lower and lower over a period of time. At one gig, I realised it sounded terrible - not clanky as such. just loads of barky mids, and no authority. The notes weren't very big acoustically either. I raised the action back so something sensible, and it sounded fab again... IME, of course..
14. Action too low, maybe? How does it sound acoustically?
15. Part of the reason I ain't going this time is that, for the last few tours, they've been mixed by deaf people.
16.
And if that's a Jazz, it is very much played on the neck pickup I would say...
Deffo. He's said in interviews that he did this a lot (and I believe him on that one!)
17. Flats or rounds? Let's decide... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ANwQW8aspI
18. When are the HD's back in stock, Barrie?
19. It's his Jazz, I think. And, although I'm reluctant to question the recollections of a musical legend, I'd put money on it being strung with flats, not rounds like he's been quoted as saying.
20. Hmm.. I do have a lovely 1971 Jazz that might like a new home...?
21. I'm all for companies protecting their copyright to a reasonable degree, but this whole thing reeks. JH should be ashamed.
22. Alex used to have a great tone. Now it's a drop-tuned slab of sludge. IMO, of course. :-)
23.
I have not missed Rush in the UK since the Signals tour and have been an avid fan since 1980.....but something strange has come over me with regard to them, and after some (considerable) deliberation have decided not to fork out my hard earned on this tour for the first time. At the time machine tour a couple of years ago I had a moment of clarity and suddenly realized, about mid way through, that I was really bored hearing the same old stuff yet again...and that the new material just is not my cup of tea at all. I also found the video footage featuring the band throughout to be only "mildly amusing" at best whereas others around me were splitting their sides. It's probably just me!. Anyway, that aside, good luck to Rush on the tour and I hope all of the basschatters that will be attending a great gig.
^^ this is broadly my experience. The new stuff is just pretty dull, generic and unmelodic. I wish they'd be themselves and stop trying to sound like other bands. And I know NP isn't a groover, but he used to swing a bit. Now he just sounds leaden.
