1. Here's an 11-minute clip that'll give you a good idea of the versatility of these basses... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msMB0qXZUmA
2.
Are the Jazz anodized plates bevelled? The '57 P-bass ones aren't.
You're right, of course. I'm a dafty.
3.
Am I going mad or would a anodized Jazz R/H plate turned over fit a leftie? Apart from the countersunks
The edge bevel would be wrong...
4.
Have you tried the aguilar db750? Loads of weight behind each note! Loved mine was gutted i had to sell. All valve amp my fav is the orange ad200, and you could probs pic up 2 second hand for the price of the mesa. Andy
I'm not sure the DB750 falls into the OP's 'lightweight' category...
5.
The punters have paid to hear your songs played live, if you screw them up then it's courteous to unscrew them and give the punters what they paid for. To plough on regardless is an insult to your paying punters.
Yip - especially if someone is painfully out of tune.
6. One thing I've never understood is ploughing on when one of the band has an obvious tuning issue. If you're only a few bars in - stop the band, tune up and start again. No damage done.
7. Oh, at the gig? Press on, unless its a total car-crash.
8. If it's something that happens at the same point every time, rewind and get it right. If someone's just done a flub, crack on.
9.
Nice. Pardon my ignorance but what bass is that and what do the controls all do?
Yip... it's a Roscoe Beck. Quick run-down of the controls: Passive volume, passive tone (pull up to emphasise bridge pickup). Switches select series / parallel / single coil for each pickup.
10. Hi all I recently took some pics of one of my basses and I realise they do a very good job of showing off its custom pickguard, made by BC's very own The Bass Doc. As I'm forever recommending him to people on BC, I thought I may as well start a thread I can point them to. Anyway... this particular guard is especially notable for two reasons: It's a pretty complicated non-standard shape, with lots of cut-outs; and the tortoiseshell material used is much, much nicer than the 'pepperoni' style of most tort plates I've seen. And, to top it all off, his prices are very, very reasonable. Drop him a PM before you buy something off-the-shelf...
11.
If you want an all-valve sound without the weight, try to find a Warwick Quadruplet preamp. This has a tiny valve power amp and output transformer running a dummy load, and then a low current signal is taken from that to the preamp's output. They did heads too, which used the same preamp and then had a powerful solidstate power stage. I think there are some other designs like this but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
The MESA Walkabout... and it sounds gorgeous t'boot. Some say it's the tubiest hybrid, and IME I have to agree.
12.
+1 for Bass Doc. He's good AND cheap !
He's a dab hand at making pickguards, too!
13. Disclaimer: I have no experience with the B-15 other than what I've heard on recordings... and a lovely sound it is. Anyway, the MESA Walkabout Scout might be worth a look. Here's one report. I've used the head for years, and the combo befre that, and it does have something about it that other non-tube heads I've tried don't have. (That last sentence kind-of makes sense if you read it enough times).
14. [Stock reply mode ON] Drop The Bass Doc on here a PM - he'll make one for you for not much money.
15. Boomy and mushy here, with Berg 210s. Not your average boomy / mushy cabs. Still, one man's boomy and mushy is another man's not boomy and mushy.
16.
Are there many deps who don't read?
Me, and most of the others I know...
17. Apologies for the double bump, but as the sun is out, I can take some more pics...
18. There can't be many of these around...
19. Is it a one-off? If so, find out if you can send a DI to the PA, If you can, point the cab at your ears, and have fun.
20. That first clip is proof that a P-bass can do no wrong. I hope he fined the brass boys a few quid of their wages, though...
21. Usually there's an exemption for gear nicked from a paid gig. I'd check if I were you...
22. Is it over 50 quid? If so, have you paid?
23.
So just turn the gain down then.
On a dark stage, in a hurry? Nah. Silent jack does the job, and gives me one less thing to do.
