Here's a couple of clips from a show we've been doing recently... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgffQn1ldkc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ-46YU0nnM

Hi all I'm doing a run of theatre gigs at the moment. I'm using a fretless P for half the set, and a fretted P for the other half, both strung with flats. With that kind of thing, the magic all goes on in the mids, My current cabs (Berg HS210s) are glorious, but I've never *loved* tweeters. Anyway, BC's own Conan kindly lent me his Barefaced Vintage. I used one before a while ago and I loved it, but I fancied another shot. Rolled it in to the gig last night, hooked my Walkabout up, and straight away that lovely middy clarity was there, with a much smoother top thanks to the lack of tweeters. There's still top, just not the zingy kind. I'm not that kind of guy. The fretless was especially glorious, with a huge, detailed growl. During the check I rolled a lot of the lows off because the FOH subs were carrying things, and I didn't want to muddy the stage up. Of course, the cab weighs virtually nothing, but it's too big. I need something smaller and more modular, with the same characteristics.... time to think.... (one the waiting list has come down, of course!)

Dave Pegg, still the best! (IMO)

I saw the Fairports at Cambridge folk festival on Sky Arts a few months back, and it looked to me like he was using a little Ibanez Promethean combo... Incidentally, Maartin Allcock turned up at one of our gigs last weekend. Had a nice chat with him. He wants to buy my fretless, but he's not getting it. Lovely chap. -
Hi all Just heard from him:
Presently can't get into the workshop due to builders carrying out remedial work. Also stuff moved out into spare room means access to computer is limited. Can you let BCers know all we be finished by Wednesday when I'll be able to clear the backlog of jobs outstanding. Cheers, Horrid.
Hope this helps! Howard's a good friend, and a very decent chap - I'm sure he'll sort the backlog ASAP.

Hmm... unusual for Howard. I've put the feelers out too.
There's a huge gap in the neck pocket on the E side..............
There's a gap (it's a Fender, after all), but I think the size of it is emphasised by the black binding.
It looks to me that he's just put Geddy's name in the listing because it's of a similar vintage. He doesn't actually say that the bass was owned by Geddy.
Yip..

I got mine from eBay from some American fella wot made them. It's leather, with a fleecy underbelly - 10-ish years, still going strong.
...Specially when I can't even hear half of the notes coming through that mud.
It just goes to show that you can't please everyone! I think it's a shining example of a bass player wanting to fit in the mix, rather than punch through it or sit on top of it. I can hear all the notes just fine. -
Check your pickups aren't too high. And, as mentioned above, mids are where it's at. Make sure you have enough going on in the right place.

Vintage Fender Precision 1970's £2000
wateroftyne replied to bassmoof's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I certainly wouldn't stump up for it without going to see it first, but that's only sensible. Body looks fine to me, as does the rest of it. My spidey sense ain't tinglin'. -
Vintage Fender Precision 1970's £2000
wateroftyne replied to bassmoof's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Based on what I can see in the photos (always the caveat) it looks right to me. Pickguard (hard to fake) is correct, bridge has elongated G screw, tuners are correct, logo correct... I'd make the trip if I was in the market for one. -
If I were wanting a US item from overseas, I'd have to go with guitarcenter.com in the used dept. Anything else would be either too expensive or too dicey. When you set up your search, uncheck "used" and check "vintage." I don't know how they handle overseas shipments. You will find many good deals there. You can call the GC that holds that item and ask for an "in-hand" description, that is, they'll hold it and examine it and you ask all the questions you want. I plan on buying everything I can from GC used.
Is this the same Guitar Center that sold someone a Ritter that turned out to be a Chinese knockoff, despite them being told by the owner of the original? Anyway, that's a nice looking early 70s P in the OP. -
Mesa 400+ tone in a lightweight package?

Ta, Chris - never used a 400+ so I didn't try to guess. -
Mesa 400+ tone in a lightweight package?
wateroftyne replied to onehappybunny's topic in Amps and Cabs
I haven't used a 400+, so take this with a pinch of salt, but... the Walkabout has magic going on, and 'weight' that I haven't experienced with any lightweight amp (or any solid state / hybrid amp, for that matter). It's quite unique in Mesa's line-up - have a rummage around on TalkBass to see if there's any comparisons with the 400+. -

I don't think the Classics are prone to failure. If you like it, get another.

Are all basschatters in covers bands?
wateroftyne replied to redstriper's topic in General Discussion
That's debatable. Have met plenty of originals bands who gig whatever they can get week by week.
I don't doubt that there are loads of bass players gigging regularly in original bands. I'm one of them. But... there'll be far more playing cover gigs, more regularly. I guarantee it. -
Exactly - there are many such posts, usually very popular, whereas there are very few posts about original music. Unless I'm missing something
The reality is that cover bands gig more. So, there's more to talk about. -
Here's one: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189766-my-top-ten-most-played-songs-by-pub-function-covers-bands/page__fromsearch__1
That's a thread about covers versions, posted in by people who play in cover bands. Am I missing something? -
For what it's worth when I was gigging I only played originals because I had (and still have) absolutely no interest whatsoever in learning other peoples songs. I now do neither because I hate all the crap that goes with being in a band.
Being in a band with (probably) a bunch of numpties who write lousy songs will do that to you... -
It sometimes seems so and maybe that's why I always feel a bit different on here
'Different'...? Can you give an example?
